About Joe Corso: I grew up in Queens, New York and I started writing to raise money to send my grandchildren to better schools. I’ve written 12 books and 6 short stories. Right now I’m working on the fifth installment of The Starlight Club series. When It’s completed I’ll write a sequel to the Lone Jack Kid which is a finalist in the 2013 Readers Favorite book contest in the Western category. The Starlight Club won the silver in the 2012 eLit TRUE CRIME category, and is a finalist in the 2013 Readers Favorite book contest. Another Readers Favorite finalist is my short story FIRE: Box 598.

Go figure. If I would have known I could write a good story, I would have started my writing career a half century ago.

About the book: Leave it to Lucky Campo to discover something new about his abilities. Leave it to the Chinese to find this of extreme value to their country. What began as good news becomes a curse. Seems Lucky’s life is full of surprises and the dilemma is now how to handle them all. The love of his life lives in another time period, yet Lucky pines for the luxuries of the present. The Inquisition just about seals those thoughts. The Spanish priests don’t understand anything about Lucky, the King’s wizard. As plagues abound, they become more convinced of his sorcery.
The old gang is still with Lucky and as always, they have his back, but is there enough time left? Can they defeat the brutal tactics of Quiang Shan, Director of China’s Secret Police? Who is the one who betrayed Lucky? And where is the Princess?
We travel from the dinosaurs to the Pyramids to twelfth century England and back to Astoria. Ah, dear old Astoria. Life is never dull with Lucky as he travels through the Time Portals.

Review by Susan Keefe

Lucky Campo has acquired the gift of time travel after a horrific injury, and as time progresses his abilities continue to evolve.

However, he is being noticed, and when the Director of the Chinese Secret Police, Quiang Shan discovers proof of Lucky’s abilities, he wants to capture him and gain this knowledge, at any cost. Thankfully Lucky has his good friends watching his back, but will they manage to discover who gave Quiang Shan the information and will he succeed?

For Lucky, love knows no boundaries, and in medieval times, his love Princess Krystina, has a revelation of her own for him. Fantastic news, but the Spanish Inquisition’s arrival and their unwanted interest in the King’s wizard puts his princess in danger, and soon Lucky finds himself using all his powers and resources to keep them safe.

Full of science fiction action and adventure, this fourth book in the series has all the excitement of the previous three, as Lucky and his friends travel throughout time. The stories are continuous, however, with the author’s attention to detail, and its self-explanatory plot it can happily be read alone.

If you’re looking for a good story with an exciting plot which will capture your imagination and keep you engrossed until the end I can thoroughly recommend this book.

What happens next Joe?

Horse Country – A World of Horses by Christine Meunier

A wonderful insight into the horse world.

Product Details

About Christine Meunier: Christine Meunier considers herself introduced to the wonderful world of horses at the late age of 13 when her parents agreed to lease a horse for her. She started experiencing horses via books from a young age and continues to do so, but recognises that horses cannot be learnt solely from books. She has been studying horses from age 16, starting with the Certificate II in Horse Studies and is currently undertaking her Bachelor of Equine Science via distance education. She has worked at numerous Thoroughbred Studs in North East Victoria before following her passion for breeding horses over to the Irish National Stud in Kildare. She then gained experience in a couple of Melbourne based horse riding schools, instructing at a basicv level before heading off overseas again, this time to South Africa to spend hours in the saddle of endurance and trail horses on the Wild Coast. Particularly passionate about the world of breeding horses, she teaches equine studies focused on breeding, at TAFE.

About the book: Follow Lise and Wes as they work their way around North East Victoria, Australia in the seasonal world of breeding thoroughbreds. Horse Country follows the seasons of the Thoroughbred industry and what the day to day of working on a stud could look like.

Review by Susan Keefe

A few hours away, Maddie and Melanie are working hard in their parent’s metropolitan riding school, teaching others about horse riding and care of the horse. From the nervous first time rider, to the child who wants to run fast and jump high, the young women shape lessons to suit the individual.

Have you ever wanted to work with horses, know more about them, or own one? Well, reading this book will inspire you!

Set in Australia, it follows the lives and experiences of four people. Wes and Lise, who have a passion for breeding Thoroughbreds, and twins Maddie and Melanie who give lessons at their parents riding school.

Although written as a story, this book contains a wealth of knowledge about horses, their breeding, the stallions, and mare and foal management, as well as an interesting insight into the work involved and life behind the scenes at a riding school.

As the individual stories progress we follow some of their adventures abroad as they visit Ireland, and the U.K., proving that there are many opportunities’ available all over the world for working with horses.

Having worked at an Arabian stud in the UK I can certainly say that this book gives a wonderful, true insight into what a life working with horses is really like. Anyone who loves horses would enjoy reading this, and I can imagine it being invaluable to a young person looking to choose working with horses as a career.

From cover to cover an interesting and informative book which anyone with the slightest interest in horses would enjoy reading.

About Joe Corso:  I was born in 1935 and I grew up in Queens, New York. I started writing at the age of 75 hoping to raise money to send my grandchildren to better schools. After that I’m considering writing a sequel to the Lone Jack Kid which is a finalist in the 2013 Readers Favorite book contest. About the book: (The story that follows was written from notes I wrote on May 28, 1964, the day after the Jersey City Pier fire. The following paragraph is from an article that appeared in the third issue of W.N.Y.F in 1964, written by John J. Cunningham Deputy Assistant Chief of the Marine Division. He described the scene perfectly.)

Review by Susan Keefe

On the night of May 27, 1964, thousands of New York City residents, whose dwellings overlook the Hudson River in lower Manhattan, had ringside seats for a spectacular wind-fanned waterfront fire that lit up the Jersey shore. A fire that, before it was brought under control some hours later, taxed the combined efforts of four FDNY. marine companies, five FDNY. Engine companies, 16 JCFD fire companies, 14 Coast Guard Vessels, and 21 Pennsylvania R.R. tug boats. Units from nearby Bayonne, Hoboken, and West New York manned the vacant Jersey City firehouses. Residents as far away as Brooklyn discovered evidence of the fire on their sidewalks and lawns the following morning.

Some fires make news headlines, and the Jersey City Pier fire on 27th May 1964 was such a fire.

The author, Joe Corso was one of the fire fighting crew on Engine 24 when they responded to a call from the dispatcher – the Jersey City Fire Department was asking for Mutual Aid, they had a fire raging and needed help.

Gathering at the Holland Tunnel, they led a caravan of fire trucks towards the brightly lit skyline and into the inferno, which raged in the tall buildings at the waterfront and along the pier, threatening to spread down the coast.

United, with one goal, the fire crews worked in the extreme heat, using water from the Hudson River, fighting to halt the spread of the fire, grateful when the mighty fireboats arrive to take over.

This story is a fine example of the fire departments comradeship and mutual respect, brave men who pulled together to extinguish this raging inferno.

The author has also included in this book some interesting insights as to what it was like living there in the early 1960’s and some local information.

About the book:Every firefighter has a treasure trove of interesting stories to tell and the stories more often than not are instructional as well as exciting. When I was a firefighter, I kept notes of the fires I responded to. Now that I am retired, I have reflected on my career as a firefighter and have written a book about the men alongside whom I worked, facing dangerous situations daily.
This book is a compilation of five FIRE short stories written between 1964 and 1972, from notes I wrote after returning from fires.FIRE: Box 598 tells the tragic story where 12 New York City firefighters lost their lives in a fire. The short book won the Readers Favorite 2013 award in the short story category.FIRE: Trapped on the Fourth Floor takes place in the mid 1960s and was written from notes I took after the fire. While the story was still fresh in my mind, I added a sub-story about a friend of mine who I worked with in the FDNY. While searching through boxes I hadn’t opened in decades, I came across notes about the day I drove my buddy Joe Black to the hospital and I decided to honor his memory by including a few words about what happened that day in this short story.FIRE: The Bouncing Lieutenant occurred at the Keneret Restaurant cellar fire on Jane Street in lower Manhattan and was taken from notes written by me almost a half century ago. This book is a collection of five short stories written by Joe Corso, a retired fire fighter from notes he compiled whilst in service.

Whether you want a glimpse into the true life of a fire fighter, or are just looking for a fantastic collection of stories, this is definitely the book for you!

The author has an amazing ability to bring his stories to life, his vivid descriptions of the locations, situations and emotions felt has you sitting on the edge of your seat, itching to turn the page to find the outcome and yet not wanting the story to end.

Each story is completely different, but all contain the crew of Engine 24 of the FDNY to whom the book is dedicated.

This is a compelling collection of short stories. I finished them feeling that I had been allowed a privileged insight not only into the very real dangerous world of a fire fighter, but also, that I had been able to  feel the sense of the comradeship, dedication, duty and loyalty to fellow workers they share.

I hope the author continues to write more FIRE stories for his number one fan!

Everyone watches the stories on the news and admires the fire fighters who bravely enter flaming buildings and rescue people.
Joe Corso used to be such a person, now retired; he has decided to write some short stories about his experiences.
Fire: Trapped on the 4th floor is a harrowing account of the events of one night from the fire fighters perspective, where teamwork, loyalty and absolute trust are essential.
Gripping, fraught with danger and surprise, this short story is a fantastic read, a real insight into a world few of us are brave enough to enter and where friendships are made for life.

A school library essential in every language!

In this modern world, in many countries, schools contain children of mixed races, cultures and religion; these are the future of this world. It is for this reason I believe this inspired book should be available everywhere in all languages for children.

It is written in a fairytale way, and this beautifully refreshing story is set in a wonderful magical kingdom where Greek, Chinese, Zulu and Mayan tribes live happily together, combining their skills, under the rule of King Dareios.

However, one thing causes unhappiness – they cannot agree on whose religious beliefs and holidays are right, it upsets everyone, especially the children. Niko, a Greek boy and his friends talk about this and they decide that they want it to change, so that night Niko prays…

God appears to him in a dream and reveals, “Happiness has as many colours as the rainbow. All my children can find happiness when their beliefs and actions do not hurt others.”

Full of excitement, Niko thinks he has found the solution and tells everyone all he has seen and heard. However, instead of joy the news causes discontent, the people are unhappy, tribes divided and the kingdom suffers. So, Niko, needing guidance, prays again to God for help in finding a solution.

God listens, and that night visits him once more in a dream, giving Niko the vision to understand the true meaning of his words, and the ability to explain them in a way the people can understand. Once again, happiness is restored to the kingdom, and the king makes a special proclamation to celebrate, but to discover what that is you will have to read the book…

The storyline gently and inoffensively gives parents an ideal opportunity to promote racial harmony and tolerance of others religious beliefs to their children. There is also offered a well thought out answer as to the question, what does God look like?

About the book: I don’t feel comfortable writing about fires that I was involved in almost a half a century ago while I was on the job. My children and grand children have urged me to write about some of the fires I responded to so I have reluctantly agreed to write just five short stories. This is one of them. This story occurred at the Keneret Restaurant cellar fire on Jane Street in lower Manhattan and was taken from notes written by me almost a half century ago. Review by Susan Keefe

Training is important in all walks of life, but when your job is something as dangerous as a fire fighter, it is essential, and so fire drills are carried out every night at the FDNY. The training could save lives and you soon learn that listening to other more experienced fighters’ advice is wise.

When the call goes out to attend a restaurant basement fire, Engine 24 is the first to arrive; this story is about the events of that night, written by an eyewitness, one of the fire fighters, the author himself. Faith in the commands of your officers, following protocol and watching your comrades’ backs is essential; everyone looks out for each other in this very dangerous occupation.

When a gas leak is detected and needs to be controlled, it is the fire fighters job to do this under very dangerous conditions. The term fireball is something we have all heard, but few people have witnessed, the author’s description of one is amazing, the devastation it causes and ongoing ramifications make this story compelling reading.

Joe Corso is an amazing writer, whose vivid descriptions of the fire fighting incidents he has attended are enthralling. Through his stories, we glimpse into the world of these brave people and learn the true meaning of comradeship.

Oh, and as to the reason for the title of this book, you will have to read it to find out…

Starlet’s Web by Carla J. Hanna

 Author: Carla J. Hanna

Book Title: Starlet’s Web

Starlet's Web: The Starlet Series

Genre: Young adult, teen love and romance, inspirational romance, religious romance

Brief bio: Carla J. Hanna is the author of the STARLET SERIES young adult romance. A former housewife of Santa Monica, marketing communications executive, and graduate of Colorado State University with a Master of Arts, she lives in Colorado with her family.

Can a teen actress and a Tim Tebow stand up to Hollywood’s web of lies?  A fast read with plot twists.

Review by Susan Keefe

As soon as I started reading this book I realised it would appeal immensely to many girls in their teens and twenties.

Set in Hollywood it has all the glitz of a Jackie Collins novel but with a young adult storyline.

Marie Michael’s is a child star emerging into adulthood amidst the cutthroat cynical film industry, under the guidance of her very famous actor mother. A woman who has herself had to make hard choices and decisions in order to become successful, and make her career flourish in the spider’s web of Hollywood.

The story begins with Marie learning from her handsome heartthrob star boyfriend Evan that she has to accept the studio’s decision for them to endure a public break-up, for the sake of her career. Devastated, immediately we discover her vulnerability as she turns to her lifelong friend Manuel for comfort.

A child star and still a teenager, she has great support on set from her mother both emotionally and spiritually, fantastic prospects, and a great team behind her. However, Marie’s love lies elsewhere, away from Hollywood, forbidden and secret, safe in a world so different from her own.

Weaved into the pages of this exciting novel are glimpses of the show business world. We are treated to peeps on set, and an insight into what life is really like in Hollywood behind the glamorous facade, the strict training schedules, fitness and food routines and dedication it takes to be a star.

The story follows Marie as she discovers how to handle the emotional and physical demand of her acting career, the Hollywood scene, and the attentions of her handsome heartthrob co-stars who are used to adoration wherever they go. This is a false world, where emotions are for show, and the actors spend their whole life acting out their part, portraying the image, which is expected of them by their fans.

Starting as a sizzling romantic Hollywood novel, full of heartthrobs and glitz, this enthralling story evolves in a surprising way, when Marie makes a startling discovery, the repercussions of which are unforeseen. With the love and support of those around her, she evaluates her life, and through her strong sense of family and her faith in God, finds the ability to face the future, and go forward with her life.

This is a very appealing young adult novel with a great storyline, strong characters and a good plot; I look forward to reading the other books in this series.

The Thanksgiving Dinner Platter written and illustrated by Randa Handler

SOON TO BE RELEASED

Thanksgiving has just been announced as a holiday in the US and eight-year-old little American-Japanese girl Takari is very excited. Her father is still in Japan however, all her other relatives in America are coming over and Takari wants to help her mother with the preparations.

They have in America her Grandma Toshi’s very special platter, which is traditionally used for the celebration. Takari’s  mom explains to her all about the Japanese Thanksgiving day which has a different name Kinro Kansha no Hi. Little Takari wants to help, and her mother reluctantly agrees, however, an accident happens and her mother is very angry so she goes to play with her friend Little Sparrow.

When Takari, and Ruffles her dog arrive at his house they find him making cornmeal, which he tells her he is making in the traditional Wampanoag Indian way, with a wooden pestle and mortar, just as it was made it at time of first Thanksgiving. Sadly, she tells him all about her accident and his father offers to help her.

The children make cornbread together discussing their different ways of celebrating Thanksgiving, and then Takari discovers that Little Sparrow is taking the cornbread to the Veterans Hospital. Thanksgiving is about helping others as well as giving thanks for what you have, he explains to her, and so she joins him and discovers for herself the pleasure which can be gained by helping others.

This is a lovely multi cultural story with bright illustrations. The author has managed to gently open children’s eyes to the wider world, teaching them not only about the history behind American Thanksgiving Day but also explaining that many countries around the world celebrate their own kind of Thanksgiving days, perhaps with different names, but they all have nearly the same meaning.

Review by Susan Keefe

Loving horses, I was intrigued by this book’s title and as soon as I started reading it, I was captivated by this amazing story.

Deciding to buy a horse and choosing one is normally a straightforward process, however this whole story is one of obstacles’, coincidences and faith. From the very beginning, this partnership is tested in many ways and many times during Mary and Cochise’s incredible journey, a lesser human or horse may have given in. However, Mary’s utter devotion and deep love for Cochise’s and his total trust in her in return is an inspiration.

Mary’s support from her family, Stephen and Stephanie, friends and vets (both traditional and alternative) has enabled her, with no previous veterinary experience to care for him with his ERU and other problems. Her devotion to and love of this beautiful Appaloosa gelding is a beautiful story, one which proves, for me undoubtedly, that love, really does, conquer all.
