Mr. Tortoise on a Mission: A Folktale lesson on kindness and Forgiveness for kids. (Tortoise adventure Series Book 3) by Simons Acquah

A beautiful and inspiring children’s book.

The author Simons Acquah was originally from Ghana and now lives in North Beach, Maryland. He is passionate about promoting reading, and supporting children’s literature, and works with several non-profit organisations to help achieve this. This desire to help build children’s characters through his wonderful stories shines through from the first page of this lovely story which I downloaded to read to my granddaughter.

It is the tale of a little sparrow who lives in the forest with lots of other animals. Every day she watches them as they diligently stock their larders with food, in preparation for the forthcoming drought. The other animals, and even her own family try and tell her that she needs to be prepared for the hard times ahead, but the little sparrow ignores them and thinks that she knows best – that is until the drought arrives…

Then, desperate for food she asks the other forest animals and birds for help, but only one would help her, the tortoise. Because of his kindness she survives the drought, however, despite her promise she has no intention of repaying Mr. Tortoise’s kindness, and he is very unhappy when he discovers that he has been tricked.

Luckily, when he angrily relays his unhappiness to the owl, the wise bird offers him some good advice, and after consideration Mr. Tortoise takes it and discovers that the saying ‘wise old owl’ is true (although we don’t know if this one really is old.)

What was the good advice, and what happened next? Well, to discover the answer to these questions and more you will have to read this wonderful heart-warming story yourself.

My granddaughter and I loved this enchanting yet educational story which has been beautifully illustrated by H. Likhon. The illustrator brings the authors wonderful forest creatures to life, and we are looking forward to reading more books in this lovely series.

One Pilgrim’s Tips, Tricks, Advice, Stories and Insights for the Next Pilgrim on the Camino de Santiago by Scott E. Bell

A truly inspiring and amusing guide to hiking the Camino de Santiago.

Confession time, I brought this book because I am longing to hike the Camino de Santiago and I wanted a honest to goodness, personal opinion of what it is really like to do this amazing walk.

I couldn’t have chosen a better book. The author Scott Bell somehow manages to encourage his readers to participate in the Camino whilst giving a warts ‘n all, no holds barred account of his own journey.

Scott starting his adventure at Saint Pied du Port in southern France, although there are various starting points. As we walk this beautiful, historical, journey with him he not only honestly gives his opinions on the sheer physical and mental strain which is put on the body, but he then offers advice on how to overcome them.

Of course on such a long route, accommodation is also very important, and the author discusses the various types of accommodation available, and the pros and cons of each, including some nasty little critters.

For some people the Camino is a spiritual journey, for others it gives them the time to find themselves, some are youth groups, friends, and others are families. During his travels he met and befriended many people from across the world, each with their own story, and reason for doing the Camino, and so human interest stories abound throughout the book.

The one overwhelming thing about this book is that it is truly one man’s journey, recounted with the purpose of helping others discover not only what they will need to undertake it, but also what they don’t need. The size of your backpack and weightiness of unnecessary gear is discussed and recommendations given by the self-named ‘snail’ of the route.

As the author says, the Camino de Santiago is different for each person, and during their journey that person will discover things about themselves they never knew before.

I found this book totally enthralling, and reading it, the author has inspired me to walk my own Camino when I can. I have to say though that even if you have no intention of doing the Camino, this book is jam packed with wonderful information about the villages and landscapes which the walk goes through and it is littered with historically interesting facts. – Highly Recommended!

About the Book:

So you’re thinking about walking the Camino de Santiago? Congratulations! This is the book you’re looking for.

This is not your typical travel guide. You won’t find lists of all the towns along the Camino, distances between them, recommended restaurants, tourist must-sees, yadda, yadda, yadda. There are plenty of good Camino guidebooks and apps out there for that. Nor is this a novel, diary, spiritual journal or reference manual. It is some of each… and a lot more!

Here you’ll find advice to enhance YOUR Camino. Practical stuff, like what to pack. What NOT to pack! Tips to keep you safe and healthy. Advice about carrying money. Key Spanish phrases. Stories to entertain you. I keep it light, I keep it simple, and I keep it real.

My experiences and insights on the Camino Francés will help prepare you for the Camino. But I don’t just want to prepare you to walk the Camino… I want to inspire you! My stories, after all, are MY stories, and my experiences are MY experiences. Your job is to get out there and create your own.

Your adventure awaits.

99 Creative WOWs Words of Wisdom for Business – Motivational Gift Idea for Entrepreneurs, Business Owners, and Creative Thinkers by Randi Brill

Priceless WOWs from Randi Brill

The author of this highly motivational book at the age of 14 knew she was ‘Going to be in charge of something,’ and sure enough she has been in her own words ‘in charge of several “somethings” since then.’

Randi Brill received a BFA in Graphic Design from Carnegie Mellon University, and then her education really began in the real world! The experience she has gained so far in her working career through, hard work, forward thinking, the determination to succeed, and real guts made her the woman she is today. She admits to using personally, and sharing as Chief Creative Officer of QuaraCORE, WOWs or Words of Wisdom every day. It is her belief in the power of these that instigated her to produce this inspiring book so others can be energised and learn by them too.

The WOWs are categorised into Business, Personal and Creative, although the author says that they may well overlap for the reader. The whole book is so bright and attractively displayed that it is quick and inviting to read, yet the WOWs are so motivating that they stick in your mind.

Whether you are launching a new business, resurrecting an old one or looking to change your career or direction, these words of wisdom will not only inspire and motivate you, they will also give you food for thought. What I really loved about this book is that many of the words of wisdom come from experience and for me, and I am sure for you, they will either ring a bell straight away or if not, I am sure they will come to mind at some time in the future when you are in a particular situation.

The amazing achievements of this author in themselves are an inspiration, and in reading this fantastic book we are fortunate enough to gain from her words of wisdom, derived from her vast experience. This little book is a gold mine of tips and one I shall treasure for always and re-read frequently!

About the Author:
I was 14 years old when my mother introduced me to someone who asked me what I planned to BE when I grew up. According to my mother, I impatiently responded in a matter-of-fact tone that I was going to be in charge of something. While not much else went according to any of my other 14-year-old master plans, that part turned out to be true. I have been in charge of several “somethings” since then. As a creative entrepreneur, I color outside the lines—for a living. I wrote my first sales order in crayon at 3. With $57 to my name, 22 years later I launched my first official business, Quarasan, in the basement of a four-room house. For over 30 years, I successfully grew that company into a dynamic educational product development firm, creating and producing top educational programs for the nation’s leading publishers. During that time and since, I have started—and stopped—multiple creative entities. My formal education at Carnegie Mellon University ended with a BFA in Graphic Design. I was vaguely aware that CMU prepared its graduates to lead, not follow. My extended education began exactly where CMU prepared me to go—the leadership hot seat. The design education I received from CMU was an excellent foundation to run my first creative business, but it wasn’t enough. Until I did my post-graduate work at Randi’s Real-World University, majoring in Take Smart Risks with a double minor in Figure It Out and Gee, That Really Didn’t Work, I had little idea what it really takes to succeed in business. Today I do—through this book, I’m delighted to share some of these discoveries with you.

Philippe The Black Sheep/Philippe Le Mouton Noir by Joan Dupont

Philippe proves that dreams really can come true!

This is an enchanting story about a courageous black lamb called Philippe, he’s not your ordinary lamb, no following the flock for him, he knows what he wants out of life!

You see Philippe wants to become an artist, he loves to paint and dreams of escaping to Mont Saint –Michel where he imagines himself sitting under its bell, painting.

However, it is one thing to have dreams and another to follow them through, and in this enchanting story we discover if Philippe is successful. We follow his intrepid journey as he bravely works out how to escapes from the mundane life the other salt marsh sheep live, and eventually arrives in France, ready to embrace his new life.

Of course, there is one important little thing that Philippe has overlooked though – in fact he has probably not even considered it, it is that he is a lamb, and for a lot of people his future will have already been decided.

Undaunted and no doubt unaware of the above, Philippe is confident that with hard work his dream will come true, and so he sets out to find a job in the land of his dreams. Determined to succeed he sets out to prove how hard he can work, despite the taunting of Chef Louis the Cruel.

Through his exciting adventure the author, Joan Dupont, teaches the reader some important life lessons, that if you believe in yourself, do what you know is right, and help others, dreams really can come true.

My little granddaughter absolutely adored this delightful story which is not only beautifully illustrated throughout by Ellen Shires but lovely to read as it is written in rhyming verse.

I know this story will be a firm family favourite for years to come.

About the Author: Joan Dupont, author, writes on film and the arts and is known for her interviews in the International Herald Tribune and The New York Times. This foray into children’s fiction was inspired by a visit to the bay of Mont Saint-Michel. Ms. Dupont, originally a New Yorker, lives mainly in Paris.

About the Book: This is the story of Philippe, of France, a Salt Marsh Lamb with artistic ambitions. After an arduous journey, he ends up in a Mont Saint-Michel kitchen with a cruel chef — until he’s freed to do his art. The underlying message is to follow your star. Deborah Calling by Avraham Azrieli

A wonderful and thought provoking story.

After reading the beautifully written Deborah Rising, I couldn’t wait to read this continuation of the author’s fictional story of the life of Deborah, one of the most well-known prophet in the Old Testament.

The story continues as Deborah is desperately trying to become a man, certain that this is the only way that her father’s prophecy that she will become a great prophet can come true. She believes this is the only way she can succeed, as in her time women are at the mercy of their husbands, and it is not possible for them to own anything, so she is taking an elixir to become a male so she can succeed in bringing the word of her god, Yehweh, to the Hebrew people.

Her life has already been terribly traumatic, and fraught with danger, as she has been forced to flee her home Emanuel, and the anger of Seesya, her husband, the son of Judge Zifron their leader, and a cruel murderer.

The story commences at the tannery where Deborah has taken the male name of Borah. It is as Borah that her quest continues, and she helps Kassite the slave manager of the Tannery, and all the slaves escape, fulfilling promises she has made to those she has loved, and who have helped her on the way.

As she is forced to return to her past, she discovers that even in the guise of a male her journey is perilous, and she must confront her fears, and in order to survive carry out acts which are abhorrent to her, and against her faith. However, she is determined to follow the path she believes is her fate and is guided by her dreams, and the visions she sees in them, as she rides over the land on the back of an eagle.

As I read this powerful book I found myself constantly being amazed by Deborah’s strength and resilience, her absolute faith was very inspiring, and this just grew and grew as her story unfolded.

The people she meets on her travels, their stories, the actions of those around her, and the way they influenced her life, tested her, and then enabled her to go forward to pursue her true calling are wonderfully told by the author. Throughout the reader can only be humbled by her bravery and faith.

I found this story absolutely enthralling and couldn’t put the book down, and I would recommend it as fascinating read.

Rule #1 Don’t Be #2 by Daniel Milstein

NEW RELEASE – TODAY!

THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE FOR BUSINESS OWNERS AND ENTREPRENEURS – RULE #1 DON’T BE #2

If you don’t sell yourself nobody else will!

This book is a true gem, it is empowering, inspirational, ruthlessly honest, but most importantly it is probably the most outstandingly motivational book you will ever read, if you REALLY want your dream to come true.

Why? Because it’s written by a man who knows what he’s talking about. You see, in 1991, Daniel Milstein and his parents arrived in America, they were fleeing the religious and political persecution which raged in their native Soviet Union. Daniel Milstein at 16, had only 17 cents in his pocket, however even at that young age, he was richer than most, why, simply because he had a win/win mind-set, a positive outlook, guts and determination. With these assets, from that moment, although he himself didn’t realise it, he was already on his way to achieving the American Dream.

What I liked about this book is that it is so full of inspiring stories. However, this doesn’t mean his message is sugar coated, certainly not! This is a man who tells it as it is, and freely admits that his philosophy runs along the lines of a swift kick in the pants.

Throughout he insists that success lies in attitude, and action, dreaming is no good, it is futile to wait for luck to come your way, the right time, approval from others. You MUST work hard, grab those chances, and not fear failure. Should things not go well, then use the experience as a learning curve, and take a lesson from Arianna Huffington’s mother, who told her daughter (Founder of The Huffington Post) ‘Failure is not the opposite of success; it’s a steppingstone to success.’

Complacency is another very important factor Daniel Milstein covers. It is essential that you remember you can never rest on your laurels. “Success is never owned. It is rented and the rent is due every day!” is his motto. When you succeed be pleased, but don’t become content with your lot, your competitor is waiting to step in your shoes as soon as you lapse, so make sure you don’t!

Persistency is vital. Whatever your dream, go with it, and don’t give up. Should you fail the first, second, third… time then continue to persevere. He provides examples of many well-known names from the MacDonald brothers, Henry Ford, to the inspirational Jim Eisenreich, people who didn’t give up, or listen to those negative influences. Through the motivational quotes and messages strewn copiously throughout the book, the reasons why those who succeed do so, are laid out in plain sight for you to see. Be brave, think outside the box, follow that dream, and then dream bigger, and better. Remember success might not happen overnight, but if you never go for it, you can never win. So stick with it, work hard and learn from those around you and, you will make it.

Eighty-six percent of millionaires are self-made, and two thirds of the world’s billionaires made their fortune from scratch – so what’s stopping you?

Pick up a copy of this book and follow the authors guide to success, learn from him, and others then show the world just what you can achieve!

Marie and Mr Bee by Margaret Welwood

Important life lessons from Marie and Mr Bee

In this wonderful children’s book we meet Marie, who is a lovely happy little girl who just happens to be in a wheelchair, and for me this is a very important element of this book and one which makes it extra special. Millions of children are in wheelchairs and yearn to be treated normally and they want to play the same as other children. Marie sets a shining example, she lives a happy full life, in a cabin in the woods and has some marvellous animal friends who she enjoys playing with.

Being a good girl she does all her household chores first, then she knows she can be free to meet her friends and play games with them.

However, when one day Mr Bee flies in and boasts that he doesn’t do any work, Marie begins thinking, why work, after all if Mr. Bee doesn’t have to, then why should she?

As the idea takes hold, it seems fantastic, however soon Marie realises that all her friends do important chores and can’t just play when she wants them too. Suddenly she starts to understand that although playing is fun, it has its place, everything people do is important, and everyone has responsibilities.

Then when Marie finds Mr Bee hungry and sad, the author uses Marie’s kindness and forgiveness to round off this lovely story by illustrating to children the importance of compassion, responsibility, and the wonderful power of friendship.

I read this enchanting and beautifully illustrated story to my grandson and he loved it. Not only is this a wonderful story but it opens doors to discuss potentially difficult things with children, like wheelchair use, and why it is important that they do their chores before play. And finally, who can resist making Marie’s blueberry pancake recipe which is at the back of the book.

About the Author:

Great Aunt Lily taught me to read, my mother parked me in the book section of The Bay while she did her shopping, and my grade 12 English teacher encouraged me to write.

So here we are *several* years later . . . .

I have written over 100 traditionally published magazine and newspaper articles. I also edited a diabetes education guide that won first place in the reference category of the Writer’s Digest Self-Published Book Awards (2010).

And I taught English as a Second Language for years with stories as a mainstay.

Now a new door has opened into Storyland . . . the world I’m exploring with my grandchildren. My first picture book for children, “Scissortown,” is the only one I know of that offers a choice of inside back cover. “Marie and Mr. Bee” offers a choice of last page.

I also like to encourage young readers and writers–my site features stories and art by children 7-12 years old. You may wish to check out some of their interesting and colorful creations.

A weekly storytime with young children as well as time spent with my grandchildren have made for some interesting discoveries about children’s literature. I blog about these discoveries and review my top picks on Goodreads and other sites.

Locally, I help adults improve their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills one-on-one. I also offer editing and proofreading services.

About the Book:Marie is a happy little girl who lives in a cabin in the woods, working and playing with her forest friends . . . until a not-so-busy bee entices her to neglect her work! Compassion, forgiveness, and a forever friendship follow.

By the following summer, Mr. Bee is too old to fly. But every night, Marie lifts her little friend onto her lap and reads to him from their very own storybook.

Marie uses a wheelchair, which is clear from the pictures. However, there is only one reference to the chair in the text–when she wheels the ailing Mr. Bee back to her cabin after his expulsion from the hive. Some people appreciate the fact that the disability is present without being the focus. Others are pleased to see someone with a disability in the role of rescuer.

Also available with Bible verse references on the last page, as Marie and Mr. Bee (Proverbs 12:14b Version).

One Mother’s Journey: Creating My Family through In Vitro Fertilization by Jennifer Prudenti

For most of us women having a baby is something we naturally want, and assume it will just happen, sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t.

In this frank and detailed book the author, Jennifer Prudenti, with timely insertions from her husband Marty, take us on their quest to be parents. Throughout, they lay bare their thoughts and emotions for us to read, in the hope that it will give others guidance and that it will help to full in some of the questions which others are wondering about, or may have forgotten to ask.

Jennifer’s story starts very openly as she explains how, as the daughter of a loving mother, all she wanted was a daddy, and how, like many before and since, she turned to boys to get the attention she craved from males. This yearning, and the consequences of it took her health and body down a tragic route which eventually led her to need In Vitro Fertilization, or as it is commonly known IVF.

Happily married, all Jennifer and her husband Marty wanted was a family, however, this was not to be – well not easily, as you will read. The path they took was a hard one, IVF. Jennifer explains in detail the various procedure, and tests which she endured, and the life she led dancing to the rhythm of her body clock, and the routines which had to be followed. The unfortunate disappointments, the emotional rollercoasters, and everything being swept aside by Jennifer’s strong feelings that she would be incomplete as a woman, and a wife, without being a mother, despite Marty’s protestations of the opposite.

Along with following traditional guidelines, she found herself trying alternative medicines and remedies. They changed clinics and doctors, done whatever they could until, finally she was carrying her babies.

For many, from then onwards is a natural path, set in stone, but for others (myself included), this is just the beginning of months of fears and worries. Unless you have experienced it no-one can understand the feelings you go through just to get to the magical 28 weeks when baby is ‘viable’, however the author does a very good job, as it certainly brought back memories for me.

As the title suggests this story does have a happy ending, but then as they say in films, this is only the beginning of Jennifer and Marty’s life as parents. I am a true believer that no-one can prepare you for parenthood, of course, the love you feel when you see your baby or babies for the first time, but also the emotional toll, sleepless nights, worries when they don’t sleep, the list is endless. As parents all we can do is our best, and of course hindsight is a wonderful thing.

This story is one which needed telling, not only because Jennifer and her husband thought so, but also to give hope, information, courage and the strength not to give up to the thousands of couples out there who strive to have a family of their own, whatever it takes….

About the Author: Jennifer Prudenti is a mother of two beautiful kids, Sophia and Michael. She lives in Albertson, New York, with her husband, Marty, their children, and the family cats, Smudgie and Sabrina. She is a mother, daughter, wife, friend, coworker. She is just like you, and her story could be anyone’s. She is a marketing professional who has worked in the music business, publishing, and television, and writing is her passion..

About the Book:  What if you thought you had it all figured out, and then just like that, nothing was as it seems? This is a story of determination, perseverance, and faith. This is a story about making your dream come true, despite the odds. This is my story.
