The Starlight Club 7: End Game by Joe Corso

51Z8JtnnalL__AC_US160_

Although they live apart, Bobby has a wonderful relationship with his daughter Lynn, and she never tires of hearing his tales of the Starlight Club in Queens, New York. So, as they wait for the snow to clear before Bobby returns home, he tells her of a pivotal time in its history…

Suddenly he’s back in 1962, and the boys are at the Zebra Club celebrating the return of their mate Renato after his discharge from the army. However, when they witness a friend being beaten up across the road, they take chase. When they catch up however, in the blink of an eye the situation changes, as they could do in those days, and Renato is beaten nearly to death by the gang’s leader, Sailor Burke.

Now Bobby jumps forward to 1965, and at the Starlight Club Tarzan is suggesting a new barman for the club, none other than the aforementioned Renato Mellina. Red remembers him, and after a little talk about loyalty and family he is hired.

Soon however trouble comes knocking at Red’s door in the form of Aldo Zinera who has been hired to head the new government F.B.I task force on organised crime. He has a vendetta against Red, and leaving no room for doubt, or error, Aldo quickly informs Red that he will get him, uncover his crimes and see him sent to prison.

Realising the very ‘real’ danger he is in, and knowing that it is possible for charges to be made to stick, Red embarks on a fight, literally for his life.

Always used to taking care of his people, Red now has to look after himself and his new wife. Soon he realises there is only one course of action left open to him which will stop the vindictive Aldo.

It is drastic, however, once resolved, Red wastes no time in setting his plan in action, calling in favours and getting on with the job. It’s not the time for regrets, now is the time for action!

Undaunted, the plan is carried out, however, things hot up almost out of control as Red and his men find themselves literally fighting for their lives.

The question is – can Red pull the right strings, has he the necessary clout to survive?

With a fantastic storyline and brilliant characters this book is action packed right to the last page. Imaginative subplots, revenge, passion, love and betrayal, the Starlight Club 7 has it all, and is definitely a winner for all crime thriller fans.

As it closes, I ask myself, although this is called ‘End Game’ and is it truly the end of an era?

As the last page is read, only one person has that answer, and that’s the author, Joe Corso.

About the author: I’m a Korea Veteran. I Retired from the FDNY and I Grew up in Queens, New York. I started writing late in life hoping to help my grandchildren pay for their college education. I found to my surprise that I could tell a good story which resulted in my writing 29 books, garnering 18 awards and becoming a 4 time top 100 best selling author.

Go figure… If I would have known I could tell a good story. I would have started writing a half century ago.

The Time Traveler by Joe Corso

The Time Traveler-Cover 1

Fans of The Time Portal series know that the main character is called Lucky Campo, and that he gained the power of time travel after a horrific accident. In this book the author, Joe Corso, takes the reader back to Lucky’s terrible ‘accident,’ and explains how, and why it happened.

The story is told in the form of a meeting at the Astoria Safe House between Lucky and Professor Lindstrom. At the meeting, Lucky recounts to the professor what happened when he was kidnapped, and woke up in a hospital room, at an unknown location, securely tied to the metal frame of his bed.

Eventually, he discovers that he is in a medical facility in Huntingdon, Long Island owned by Ivan Stross. He is being questioned by a Dr Gustav Abrams, and finds himself enjoying recounting how he gained his powers, and explaining what they are to the doctor.

Of course, the doctor doesn’t believe him. However, after consideration, he cannot resist humouring Lucky, by taking him up his offer to travel with him to another time through one of the portals.

Stepping with Lucky into the portal, the doctor soon discovers to his amazement that Lucky is telling the truth, as they travel back through the centuries, stopping off in Egypt and ancient Rome, before going to Medieval England, where he meets Lucky’s wife and children.

However, he is soon to learn that everything has a price, Lucky needs to know who captured him and why. After reassurance that he, and his family can be protected, the doctor agrees to help…

Back in the present time, Lucky and friends have to first get the doctor and his family safe, then they set about teaching Ivan Stross, and Lionel Sturm, his assistant, and the person who kidnapped Lucky a lesson, or two.

It doesn’t matter whether you have read Joe Corso’s The Time Portal series of books or not, this book stands alone. I have read them all, and yet thoroughly enjoyed learning all about Lucky’s accident. One thing I am sure of though is that once you have read this book, you will not be able to resist The Time Portal series, and trust me, you will not be disappointed!

THE OLD MAN AND THE KING: Golden Earphones Award Winner
by Joe Corso | Read by Al Benelli
Mystery & Suspense * 5.75 hrs. * Unabridged * © 2013
This entertaining thriller features an improbable hero, Lom, a 72-year-old Korean war veteran who’s still a crack shot. He quickly sets out to save Toby, the king of a fictitious country who’s hiding out in Lom’s favorite diner after dodging an attempted assassination on a New York City street. Narrator Al Benelli portrays the male characters in this slightly wacky story with verve and a spirit of adventure. He sets the stage for Lom’s adventures with a fluid delivery and excellent pacing. Further, his interpretations intensify the political machinations and international chicanery in the king’s fictitious country. He intensifies the brutality of the mobster and his hired killers and sounds fittingly concerned as Lom’s girlfriend, Martha. Overall, Benelli presents a completely entertaining audio. S.C.A. About the Book: Because of his skills, the CIA coerced Lucky Campo, jewel thief extraordinaire into joining the agency. Time passed, and one morning he awakened to find himself handcuffed to a bed without any recollection of how he got there. After being drugged and questioned, he discovered that his kidnappers had received stolen top-secret CIA information that Campo is a time traveler. His captives eager to learn if the information they have received is true use a new type of truth serum in an attempt to get him to divulge his secret, the secret of how he can travel in time.

While Lucky languishes in the hospital prison, his thoughts drift to when he was captured during a robbery and given a choice. It was either jail or join the CIA, so with no other option he joined… but with the proviso that his pal Mickey was a part of the deal.

He thought of how his boss Dirk Sommerville tried to assassinate him by rigging the building with explosives and timing it to explode when he entered the building. The explosion almost killed him. His brain and eyesight were severely injured. Upon recovering he discovered that when the doctors operated on his brain they inadvertently did something during the operation, which allowed him to see the curtains of light, the gateways that cut a wormhole through time itself. He remembered how the gateways took him from the CIA to the Crusades, from the Gladiators in ancient Rome, from nuclear weapons to safe houses, until he found himself in the situation he was now in.
How Lucky escapes is only the beginning of his adventures.

The Starlight Club 6: Double Seven by Joe Corso

51o+nSZh-UL__AA160_Bob is staying at his daughter Lynn’s house in Darien, Connecticut, as bad weather has prevented his return home. At times like these Lynn likes to take advantage of the opportunity to ask her father for some more stories from the famous Starlight Club…

Looking back over the years, Bob decides to tell her about a time when Joey Bones, Bull and Richie swapped the Crown Victoria for a Caddy convertible and drove to Vegas on business for Red. The drive as it turns out was to prove very eventful when Joey decided to pop in and see his sister JoAnne, in Bonner Springs. However, he is none too pleased to discover that her boyfriend, has beaten her up.

When they arrive at her house and confront Brian O’Rourke, the boyfriend, they discover not only is he a thug, he’s also a drug dealer. With the thumbs up from the boss they sort out the situation, however, the results of their actions brings about an interesting chain of events.

Big Red knows that getting what you want and making people bend to your will does not necessarily have to be achieved by actual violence, after all when you are that famous, the suggestion is often enough. He also knows that looking after the little guys is important, they will owe you for life, and do whatever is needed, when the time come for you to call in the favor.

With Trenchie happily married, and romance in the air, Red realises that something is missing in his own life, he can have any girl he wants but he wants a wife, and there is only one lady who will fit the bill, Iris, but will she want him? There’s only one way to find out…

For Starlight Club fans, these tales are a wonderful insight into the dark underworld of mobster life in New York, where life is cheap, and there’s no time for regrets. This book, like others in the series is studded with big names with shady pasts, and gives credence to the clever façade the Starlight Club, and others like it provide.

Another great story from award winning author Joe Corso!

Lone Jack Kid: The Return: A Western Adventure – Book 2 by Joe Corso

51SMBqqZDKL__AA160_An action packed western adventure.

In The Adventures of The Lone Jack Kid we learnt how Charles Longstreet earns the name of The Lone Jack Kid and follow his adventures in an era where lawlessness was at its peak. This was the time of cowboys and Indians, when Sheriffs tried to keep the law, gunslingers were on every corner and life was cheap.

The year is 1868, and this book opens as Charles Longstreet, or The Lone Jack Kid finishes a year on the stage in New York giving shooting demonstrations following the outstanding success of Ned Buntlines books about his previous adventures.

In her luxury apartment in the Broadway Central Hotel, the actress Sarah Bernhart receives a surprise, a beautiful diamond ring as a gift from Charles in thanks for her friendship and help.

Whilst Charles is on a train heading for Kansas City. On board, he discovers that he has an unexpected presents too, from Boss Tweed in thanks for his shooting performances, a beautiful horse, fancy saddle and a new Winchester rifle.

Arriving at Kansas he is looking forward to spending some time there, however, he soon finds that tongues are wagging and his reputation has followed him closely. So, there, as in every place, despite trying to remain anonymous, his real identity is discovered, and he is challenged by gunslingers, each one intent on proving they can draw faster, and ultimately paying with their lives.

Then, one night he is ambushed and left for dead, but he isn’t! Thus begins his search for the perpetrators and revenge.

As he travels the trails from one place to another, he has many adventures and finds himself helping lawmen, Indians and the white man alike.

His sense of justice earns him the respect of many, and he is even called to the Whitehouse for a meeting with President Ulysses S. Grant. Once there, he discovers that the president is in need of his help with the Indians, and offers him a very important job…

If you are fans of cowboys and Indian’s and the Wild West then you are going to love this book. Although it does mention some of the characters from the previous book The Adventures of the Lone Jack Kid, it is just as enjoyable to read as a stand-alone.

About the Book:

Charles Longstreet’s Broadway show ended after a year’s run and he wanted to give the actress something to remember him by. After receiving his gift the famous actress looked at her friend. “You know, Olga, some men have greatness thrust upon them and Charles Longstreet, even though he is not aware of it, is one of them.”
Charlie is bushwhacked on the trail by three hombres who after shooting him leave him for dead. Upon recovering he follows the old abandoned Butterfield Overland Stage Route where Charlie tracks the men to El Paso.

Cora who almost got Charlie killed with her curiosity stood on the wooden sidewalk in front of her store. He passed her as if she wasn’t there. Because of her immaturity she might have lost the man she always dreamed of meeting. Now it was too late to do anything but wave as he passed slowly by and think of what could have been.

Ned blew smoke from the barrel of his gun, then turned to the bartender. “He’s the Lone Jack Kid, and if these jerks would have left us alone, they’d still be alive now.”

Why is a wounded indian riding with Charles Longstreet, and why is Charlie wearing a marshal’s badge? And why does President Grant order him to the White House? These tantalizing questions are answered as the reader follows the Lone Jack Kid in his latest adventure when he rides the trail west to California.

Lafitte’s Treasure by Joe Corso

6585687_origThis book begins way back in the past, and Governor Claiborne of Louisiana’s refusal to meet with the pirate Jean Lafitte, denouncing him as a “Hellish Banditti,” a decision which was to affect the lives of future generations of both families, and others.

For in 1813, the British had approached Jean Lafitte, asking them to join them in fighting the Americans, they had no idea of what sort of a man he was. He was a pirate, yes, but he was also a mason and lived his life by their codes of honour. Luckily, General Jackson recognised those codes and virtues also, and the rest as they say is history…

The decisions we make in life not only affect us, and the lives of those around us, but their repercussions can be felt, as ripples, far into the future. Eventually though these ripples do start to settle, and so it is, that through chance events and discoveries, the lives of two people, who had previously never met, converge.

The legacies, left to Eddie, and Julianna, bond them as they embark on their exciting and dangerous adventure. Following clues left in the past, they travel to New Orleans on their quest to discover the lost treasure, however, they are not the only ones who know about it, other’s want it too, and will do anything to procure it.

This story, for me, it has all the vital ingredients, action, adventure, murder, mystery, and romance. This author’s attention to detail has meant that he has also added a lot of fascinating history about New Orleans and the famous pirate Jean Lafitte.

In Germany during WWII, a young Adolph Mueller Jr., is befriended by the head of the Gestapo, Heinrich Himmler.

Falling in love for Lucky Campo knows no boundaries. He has been given the gift of time travel and his heart lies with the Princess Krystina and their son, in Medieval England at the court of King Richard where he is known as the wizard. They marry, and things could not be happier, until Lucky senses that his friends in the present day need him, and so, he has to leave his family in the trusted hands of his good friend Tor and return.

Back in the present day, he is dismayed at the turn of events; two of his friends have been taken hostage, and then he makes a discovery, which has devastating effects. However, whilst Lucky is fighting evil in the present, he is unaware of what’s happening in the past….

The Time Portal series of books are amazing, true escapism. As we travel through the time portals with Lucky and his friends, we are treated to snap shots in time, visiting historical events as they happen, meeting people from the past, and visit places many of us will never see, some destroyed forever, before we were born.

About the book: Now, all in one complete book, Joe Corso’s ENGINE 24: FIRE STORIES BOOKS 1, 2, AND 3, including the AWARD-WINNING FIRE STORIES: BOX 598!
ENGINE 24: FIRE STORIES BOOKS 1, 2, AND 3 chronicles the career of Joe D’Albert, aka author Joe Corso, as a New York City firefighter. In this exciting compilation of fire stories, Corso details the triumphs and tragedies of his comrades-in-arms as they bravely battle some of the most dangerous fires in the history of the city. He tells of real life heroes and of lifelong friendships formed, as well as some of the turmoil that existed in New York City during his time with the department. Follow Corso through the 60s and 70s, and to the present day, from race riots to 9/11, when actual flames of unrest were doused by the bravest people in recent American history.

About Joe Corso: I grew up in Queens,New York and my motivation to write came from my wish to help my grandchildren pay for their college education. So far I’ve completed 13 novels and a number of short stories including my popular ‘ENGINE 24 FIRE STORIES’ trilogy and I’ve just finished the 5th installment in the ‘TIME PORTAL’ series.

I’m just completed ‘LAFITTE’S TREASURE’ and then I plan to revisit ‘THE STARLIGHT CLUB 5 which I shelved about a year ago, When that book is finished I will write a sequel to my western ‘THE ADVENTURES OF THE LONE JACK KID’, titled ‘THE RETURN OF THE LONE JACK KID’.

This book is a compilation of the three books Engine 24: Fire Stories written by retired New York City fire fighter Joe Corso, and dedicated to the members of Engine 24 of the New York City Fire Department.

If you are looking for action, suspense, dangerous situations, and want to feel as if you are actually walking into those blazing buildings with the fire snaking around you, then these are the stories for you, written from notes taken after fires fought by the author and his comrades.

They also provide a very interesting history of New York, over the years. Not only the famous fires but also the race riots, secret places, and the horses role in the fire service. For me personally, however, these stories are compelling reading because they are personal, one man’s recollections of his life in the fire fighting service, snapshots in time, one offs, which can never be repeated ever again…

In one of the stories, he tells, is of his first day as a fire fighter. As you sit, reading his description of that day, written from the heart, so many years later, you feel as if you are there, a silent witness, watching the young Joe as he meets his fellow workers for the first time and they take him under their wing. These are the men who taught him, brave, dedicated, and loyal, and these same qualities they installed in him, and he has striven to emulate, throughout his career.

Reading these stories it is easy to understand the close bonds, which these brave men have with their comrades. When they are facing such unpredictable danger, it is imperative they can trust them, literally with their lives, and that trust must be earned. As a result, they become a close family, and the care they have for each other reaches far beyond the Fire Station walls.

I have loved reading these stories, for me, they have everything, action, suspense, history but above all, human interest.  I wish he would write more…

Engine 24: Fire Stories 3 by Joe Corso

Wonderful compulsive reading.

FIRE STORIES 3

About the book: The final book in the Engine 24 Fire Stories trilogy focuses on the more turbulent times that firefighters had to endure in New York City during the years 1963 to 1975.
In this book, the era of Kennedy’s assassination, race riots, and looting are related through the eyes of a NYC firefighter. Joe Corso describes where he was and what the reactions of the firemen and officers were the day that President Kennedy was killed.
The author describes what it felt like to be detailed to La Casa Grande – “The Big House.”
Engine 82 was one of the busiest fire companies in the world during the race riots of the 60s. It was located in the Fort Apache section of the Bronx – and the tenseness of always having to be on guard in a hostile environment in which those men had to work is shared in gritty detail.
Corso writes of how one good firefighter lost and then regained his nerve; he writes of fires long forgotten and how, over the last 50 years, our moral codes have changed, especially pertaining to one fire that happened many years ago on Bedford Street in the West Village.

AWARDS
THE STARLIGHT CLUB won the silver in the 2012 eLit contest in the ‘TRUE CRIME’ category’. In 2013 the book won HONORABLE MENTION in the ‘HISTORICAL FICTION’ category’.
THE LONE JACK KID won ‘FINALIST’ in the 2013 Readers Favorite in the ‘WESTERN’ category.
My short story ‘FIRE: BOX 598’ won the BRONZE in the 2013 Readers Favorite contest in the ‘HISTORICAL NON FICTION category’.
Go figure. If I would have known that I could write a good story. I would have started writing a half century ago.

———-

I have loved reading the previous Engine 24 Fire Stories series of books and couldn’t wait to start this one. The author Joe Corso is a retired New York fire fighter and his memories of the different incidents he has attended over the years as part of the Engine 24 crew are compulsive reading.

As Joe tells his stories, he sets the scene beautifully, taking the reader with him through memory lane deep into blazing buildings and dangerous situations. In this book, we stand alongside him as he watches the looting and race riots of yester years, and discovers some of the mysterious and secret places, which exists below New York City. Through one of the stories we are reminded how much morals have changed in current years and, wait by the phone with him, years later, as with bated breath, he hears the fate of his old company in 9/11.

Reading these books you quickly discover that to be a fire fighter, you not only have to be incredibly brave, you also have to have absolute faith in your comrades and know you can trust fellow crew members literally with your life. These men form deep bonds of friendships, which often last a lifetime and become a family, close, and supportive of each other.

Telling a good story is an art, and to be able to write that story as well is a real gift, the author Joe Corso definitely talented beyond words.

Engine 24 Fire Stories 2 by Joe Corso

Amazing stories from a retired fire fighter.

About the book: Every firefighter has a treasure trove of interesting stories to tell and the stories more often than not are instructional as well as exciting. When I was a firefighter, I kept notes of the fires I responded to. Now that I am retired, I have reflected on my career as a firefighter and have written a second book about the men alongside whom I worked, facing dangerous situations daily.

This book is a compilation of eight short FIRE stories written between 1963 and 1972, from notes I wrote after returning from fires. The first story explores the emotions felt when reporting for duty for the first time. The same emotions felt by all firefighters throughout the world on their first day on the job.

An inexplicable bond forms between men and women who face danger on a daily basis and who have been tested – and have passed the test. From the combat soldier, to the policeman and the firefighter – a bond of love and trust has formed that will last a lifetime.

About Joe Corso: I grew up in Queens, New York and I began writing in an attempt to raise money to pay for my grandchildren’s college education. I’ve written 12 books and 7 short stories. Right now I’m working on the fifth installment of The Starlight Club. When It’s completed I’d like to write a sequel to the Lone Jack Kid which is a finalist in the 2013 Readers Favorite book contest in the Western category. The Starlight Club won the silver in the 2012 eLit TRUE CRIME category, and was awarded Honorable Mention in the 2013 Readers Favorite book contest. My short story FIRE: Box 598 won the bronze in the 2013 Readers Favorite contest, in the historical non-fiction category. Go figure. If I would have known I could write a good story, I would have started writing a half century ago.

Review by Susan Keefe:

In this book, I was intrigued to learn about Joe’s very first days as a fire fighter. I will be the first to openly admit that I love Joe Corso’s stories about his career, and, as he recounts his memories, I felt as if I was transported into the very soul of the young Joe. He describes his very first day and meeting the men he was to worked with, men whose courage and dedication he strove to emulate throughout his career. Experienced fire fighters ,who took the young rookie under their wing, guided and encouraged him, whilst all the time instilling in him the firm codes and values they worked by.

There’s so much in this book. The Prologue, which has been researched by members of the IAFF tells  the history of the Maltese Cross, which is the international symbol of the fire service. I loved reading Joe’s recollections of the alarm calls they went on, the unusual characters he met, and how this close knit brotherhood of men dealt with the odd bad apple or two. I also discovered that there are many types of fires, and whilst all are dangerous, the smoke alone given off of the source materials of some can be deadly. Then the history of the old fire brigade building came to life, as Joe and his friend had to recover the old fire station journals from the roof space, and discover other things, stored there.

At the end, Joe has looked back at the animal hero’s of the service, the brave fire horses and included an interesting and humorous article by Jim Blanchard of the Saugus Fire Department and a fantastic photograph.

What can I say, this book captivated me, I just could not put it down. I loved reading of the true comradeship, loyalty and brotherhood of these brave men as seen through the eyes of the author as a young man, and the pictures within were just fantastic to see – the icing on the cake as they say.

Go figure. If I would have known I could write a good story, I would have started my writing career a half century ago.

About the book: Leave it to Lucky Campo to discover something new about his abilities. Leave it to the Chinese to find this of extreme value to their country. What began as good news becomes a curse. Seems Lucky’s life is full of surprises and the dilemma is now how to handle them all. The love of his life lives in another time period, yet Lucky pines for the luxuries of the present. The Inquisition just about seals those thoughts. The Spanish priests don’t understand anything about Lucky, the King’s wizard. As plagues abound, they become more convinced of his sorcery.
The old gang is still with Lucky and as always, they have his back, but is there enough time left? Can they defeat the brutal tactics of Quiang Shan, Director of China’s Secret Police? Who is the one who betrayed Lucky? And where is the Princess?
We travel from the dinosaurs to the Pyramids to twelfth century England and back to Astoria. Ah, dear old Astoria. Life is never dull with Lucky as he travels through the Time Portals.

Review by Susan Keefe

Lucky Campo has acquired the gift of time travel after a horrific injury, and as time progresses his abilities continue to evolve.

However, he is being noticed, and when the Director of the Chinese Secret Police, Quiang Shan discovers proof of Lucky’s abilities, he wants to capture him and gain this knowledge, at any cost. Thankfully Lucky has his good friends watching his back, but will they manage to discover who gave Quiang Shan the information and will he succeed?

For Lucky, love knows no boundaries, and in medieval times, his love Princess Krystina, has a revelation of her own for him. Fantastic news, but the Spanish Inquisition’s arrival and their unwanted interest in the King’s wizard puts his princess in danger, and soon Lucky finds himself using all his powers and resources to keep them safe.

Full of science fiction action and adventure, this fourth book in the series has all the excitement of the previous three, as Lucky and his friends travel throughout time. The stories are continuous, however, with the author’s attention to detail, and its self-explanatory plot it can happily be read alone.

If you’re looking for a good story with an exciting plot which will capture your imagination and keep you engrossed until the end I can thoroughly recommend this book.

What happens next Joe?
