Robby’s Quest: Thrills and Chills by D. C. Rush

A beautiful children’s story

Robby's Quest: Thrills and Chills

About D. C. Rush: We actually began writing our first children’s book about 2 years ago. Cathy and I would often sit outside watching the birds. We fed the birds daily. They were very clever and fun to watch, especially when the little birds kicked seed to the ground for the larger birds. It seemed the birds had some group structure and displayed very effective teamwork. We thought it would be interesting to write a book about birds flying south for the winter.
The finished book sat on our computer hard drive for over a year before my brother and sister-in-law convinced us to self-publishing. I never thought we would actually publish our work. However, the birth of our grandson Rylie gave us some added incentive to get the book out there, and we decided to dedicate the book to him. We thought it would be nice to leave something behind for our children and their children. So we had the book proofed, edited, illustrated then self-published it ourselves at Amazon.com.
Cathy and Don currently live in Arizona with their cats, Nomi and Hershey. Cathy is a homemaker and Don is a retired Manufacturing Manager and former Elementary School Governing Board Member.

About the book: The world is a very big place when you’re a little bird, but Robby and his flock of Robins, Mourning Doves, Sparrows and a lone Blackbird are determined to see as much of it as they can.

Their latest trip takes them up the coastline from San Diego to San Francisco. This means that their friend Wanda the Whale can follow along too, bringing her new friend, Wilma the Whale with her. Those aren’t the only friends the birds have. They also meet Rhonda the Red Fox, Ollie the Owl and Ellie the Eagle who all play a very important role when two baby Robins from Robby’s flock are kidnapped by a Hawk.

The birds see some amazing sights on their travels, such as Muscle Beach, giant Redwood Trees in Big Sur, Alcatraz Island and the Golden Gate Bridge. They also get to ride on roller coasters, cable cars and do bird bungee jumping!

This is another enjoyable and educational children’s story from D.C Rush about friendship, loyalty, excitement and adventure with some unusual but charming heroes and heroines.

Review by Susan Keefe

In this fourth book, we join Robby the Robin and his ever growing flock of mixed species birds as they decide to travel again, this time their adventures are to take them down the coast and they are joined by their seafaring friends  Wanda the Whale and her friend Wilma.

During their adventures, they have fun visiting lots of new places and meeting new friends, soon discovering that the tales of their previous escapades have spread far and wide.

However, at a resting place in a Redwood forest disaster strikes the flock in the shape of another bird – an evil Hawk.

In this book, as in the others of this series, children through an engaging story which is really beautifully illustrated,  learn about important qualities, such as obeying their parents, consideration for others, loyalty, friendship and trust.

I think that an added bonus is that, whilst sitting watching the birds feed with the children I found myself showing them the different bird species, and we had great fun comparing them to the Robby’s Quest characters.

When you watch the birds outside your window preparing to fly south for the winter, do you ever wonder how they know where to go, and in which direction?

Well, in this delightful book you follow Robby the Robin, his brother, and a variety of feathered friends on their adventures south.

The flock, led by Robby, leave their big Maple tree with its bird feeder and lovely birdbath and set off, they’ve decided democratically, that Florida is going to be their spring break destination.

Each adult bird has a job, and the parents supervise their children.

Disaster strikes when one youngster goes missing on the way. What has happened to her? Will they be able to find her?

However, things get worse when they arrive to find Florida has been struck by a hurricane and there’s no food to be found anywhere. Follow their adventures as they struggle to find warmth and food.

Will they be able to find their way to safety and survive?

I think this is a lovely children’s book, which through an interesting story explains in a child friendly way, bird behaviour and migration.

Hershey the Cat is sad, horrible recurring nightmares haunt his sleep and all his authority has gone, all because of a silly incident with some annoying birds. What’s more, his life is changing and he has no control over it. He’s not sure what’s happening, but one thing he does know is that he’s not a happy cat!

After their summer in San Diego, Robby and his flock are deciding where to go next. Some of the flock decide to stay put, but the others are undecided. In the end, they decide to go to Las Vegas where apparently you can see many replicas of the wonders of the world in one place. The next day they set off.

Two trips made at the same time, one by a cat haunted by memories, the other by a flock of birds. What are the chances of them meeting? And, if by chance they did, what might happen?

Finally arriving in Las Vegas the flock make friends with some very unusual coloured birds and have the time of their life, visiting all the famous sights.

Meanwhile, Hershey finally arrives at his new destination and has an amazing surprise.

What will the future hold for Robby and his flock?

You’ll have to read the book to find out!

I loved having the opportunity to follow Robby’s adventures with Hershey, and could not help but admire the beautiful illustrations by the very talented Daniela Frongia.

Robby’s Quest: Ocean Bound by D.C. Rush

The further adventures of Robby the Robin and his friends.

Product Details

In the first book, Robby’s Quest for Seed, we discovered how Robby and Ricky the Robins, and their friends, migrated to Arizona, and the adventures they had on the way.

In this second book, we join the assorted flock of birds as they discover that Arizona is getting hotter by the day and wonder if they ought to migrate again, but this time to somewhere cooler.

The birds are trying to deciding where to go, and then Ruby, Ricky’s girlfriend and one of the new flock members suggests they go to San Diego, by the coast. She has been there before. All the other birds listen with interest as she tells them excitedly about her previous visit, how the weather is glorious and the food is plentiful, until finally convinced, they agree to migrate there.

Led by Ruby, they set off on their new adventure, eventually arriving in beautiful San Diego. It seems like paradise to them and soon they’ve picked their nesting tree in the gorgeous Balboa Park.

Happily, the birds go off the next day, exploring their beautiful new surroundings, but the two young sparrows Joy and Rosie become bored with sunning on the beach and decide to fly out to a big white ship they spy on the ocean.

The journey is further than they think, and when they arrive on deck they’re hungry, so they eat and take a nap. To their horror, when they awake they discover they are miles away from the flock, surrounded by sea and on an adventure of their own!

Meanwhile at home, when they’re discovered missing, all the birds go out searching for them,  then Sid the Mourning Dove learns from Sadie the friendly Seagull that she saw two Sparrows flying over to a big white ship, but didn’t notice them return.

Soon a search party sets off down the south coast and into Mexico to try and find them.

But will they succeed?

What will become of the intrepid flock next?

The continuing adventures of Robby, Ricky and the rest of the flock make a lovely story, sure to enthral any youngster, and the book is beautifully illustrated by Kaui Wilson.
