Cucina Tipica: An Italian Adventure by Andrew Cotto

The sights and culture of Italy form the backdrop for this incredible Italian adventure.

I just loved this book! In it I was transported from the first page, with American Jacoby Pines and his fiancée Claire, from my adoptive country of France into beautiful Italy. The author, Andrew Cotto, who lives in Brooklyn, is a writer whose articles have appeared in many national journals. He is also a teacher and has taught composition courses and creative writing workshops in New York City.  This Italian adventure is his third novel and in it his wonderful storytelling abilities shine through.

When the story begins the disheartened Jacoby is unemployed following an unfortunate incident at work, and he finds himself soaking up the food, culture and customs of Italy with his accomplished travel writer fiancée Claire.

Arriving in France, together they travel along the French Riviera, then onto the eye-opening Italian Autostrada, enjoying the marvellous coastal views, and staying at a beautiful coastal hotel. Then the next day they head inland to the villa they have rented, in the hills above Florence, for the coming year.

However, although they are primarily in the region for Claire’s assignment for the prestigious Haxby’s Travel Guide, Jacoby has his own agenda. Having never known his mother, he discovered upon the death of his father a box containing a photograph of a woman standing on a great lawn, and written on the back is ‘Villa Floria-Zanobini 1939.’ Thoroughly intrigued, the newly orphaned Jacoby looks upon this opportunity to join Claire at this disastrous stage in his career as the hand of fate at work.

With him, we join Claire on her research trips, as she travels the countryside meeting people from all walks of life. These experiences give the reader a wonderful introduction into the food and culture of this part of Italy, and a very entertaining look into the mentality of the Italian males’ mind, regarding women.

However, this story is primarily Jacoby’s adventure, and left to his own devices, he finally tracks down a Hotel Floria-Zanobini, which he discovers is run by another expat American, the eccentric Bill.

When he shows Bill his picture, its story begins to unfold, and an excited Jacoby finds himself beginning an incredible adventure, with Bill showing him the Italy he has become part of in the previous 35 years. Together the friends set out on a mission to track down the mysterious lady in the photograph and discover the link she has with Jacoby.

Encounters with wild boar, incredible museums and artwork, wonderful buildings, and the marvellous traditional recipes, wines, and experiences, this story has it all. The author brings Florence and the countryside surrounding it to life, as with Jacoby his readers embark on a fantastic voyage of discovery of the beautiful experiences this country has to offer. Whilst throughout the story the tumultuous love story between Jacoby and Claire rides a roller coaster, helped in no mean way by Claire’s outrageous cousin Dolores.

Whether you love Italy, dream of visiting it one day (like myself) or just want to enjoy an incredibly enjoyable book set in a beautiful part of the world, I thoroughly recommend this story as the best I have ever read!

The Bootstrap Ultimatum by Avraham Azrieli

The sacrifices US veterans made should never be forgotten…

Memorial Day has become a travesty for thousands of Americans, the greedy word of commerce has taken it over. As with many other holiday days, it is used as another excuse for companies to make huge profits running special ‘Memorial Day Weekend’ sales, selling things people really don’t need, to people who just can’t resist going shopping, and then coming home with a bargain!

Not surprisingly US veterans, and the families of those who have lost their lives fighting for their country feel resentful. Many veterans are every day tragically suffering silently, terribly maimed and traumatised by war, often forgotten, or refused help by the authorities. However, this year is going to be different, as one person, an ex-Air Force Veteran has decided to do something about it! What’s more, the veteran has a powerful ally, modern technology, and aims to use all its considerable power to reap revenge on the world of commerce!

This exciting political thriller begins with Ben Teller, investigative reporter for NewZonLine Media and his girlfriend Keera popping into his father’s grave to pay their respects. They are just about to head off for a weekend away. Then Ben receives a text from Ray, his boss, asking if he can take a job on. There is trouble expected at Out-Mart. It’s on their way, so Ben decides to cover the story, and on arrival discovers a riot in progress. Someone has emailed all the Out-Mart customers an ‘Everything $1 on Memorial Day Weekend’ coupon!

This is just the beginning! Soon more coupons begin arriving in inboxes, and the troubles quickly escalate. We join Ben as he frantically tries to find the perpetrator, fitting the pieces of the puzzle together, only to discover to his dismay that a vital piece is missing. With time running out and disaster looming on the horizon will Ben manage to find the final piece, discover who the culprit is, and apprehend, them before it is too late?

I really enjoyed reading this exciting suspense mystery which has plenty of twists and turns, and a storyline which kept me riveted until the very end.

Mysterious things are happening after dark….

In this exciting adventure Handles and Spouts Incorporated, or Hands for short have to use all their detective skills to discover the answer to the Photofit Mystery.

The Hands consist of twins, Tim and Amy, Amy’s best friend Mini, Tim’s friends Ludo and Ben. Together the five form a formidable team, which meets at its headquarters, an old caravan in the twins back garden.

Amy and Mini are friends with Esme, who lives at The Nook with her father. One day they notice that she is sad, and when she tells them why they understand. Esme only has her dad, and now he is off to a new life in New Zealand, the house is for sale, and Esme has got to live with her aunt, her dad’s sister, in a nearby village. Leaving Jugminster, and her dad leaving her, when her mother has already died, is more than Esme can stand, and distraught, she asks the Hands to keep an eye on her old house until it is sold.

Of course the Hands agree, what are friends for? However over the next weekend strange things are happen at Esme’s house, and late at night, a mysterious black car can be seen leaving the barn in the field which is behind the house, after dark.

Despite their very best detective work, the Hands have plenty of clues, but they still have nothing firm to go on, so Amy suggests Esme has a sleepover at hers, perhaps six heads will be better than five.

Esme happily agrees, and is even more excited when she is made an honorary Hand for the night. In their headquarters they ponder the clues, hatch a plan, then as night time is drawing in, they put it into action.

Will they discover what is happening at The Nook?

Also, why is the black car hidden away in the barn, and why does it only come out under the cover of darkness?

The importance of friendship and comradeship shines through in this exciting mystery adventure, and this story will keep you guessing until the very last page.

I can’t wait to read the next adventure of Handles and Spouts Incorporated!

The Jug Valley Mysteries BOYS v. GIRLS (Book 1) by Anne Digby

So who are the best detectives – the boys or the girls?

This story is set in the town of Jugminster, where twins Tim and Amy Dalladay live in the ramshackle old Knoll House, with their parents and younger brother, Harry.

Tim, has two best friends Ludo and Ben and the children all go to Jug Valley County Junior School. One day the three friends are met at school by Peter Pay, a younger boy who tells them that his bike has been stolen overnight from the bike sheds. The boys decide that they must try and help Peter by discovering who could have stolen it. Of course embarking on such a dangerous venture means that they must create a name for their group, but what should it be? Cleverly, they pick on the name ‘Handles,’ and if you read the story you will discover why this is such a clever name.

Of course when Tim’s sister Amy and her friend Mini discover the ‘Handles’ and what they are going to do, they want to join in. But as you can imagine they are told in no uncertain terms that detective work is a job for boys, not girls. Of course the girls think this is rubbish and are determined to show the boys that they are just as good as they are, and so they set up their own rival club called – guess what?

As the rival groups try to discover clues and set traps, the whole thing becomes more personal as Tim and Amy’s mum’s bike is stolen. Now both sets of friends are even more determined to find the thief!

But if the police have no suspects, how can they do this?

Is the thief someone at school, or an adult?

Where are the bikes being hidden and what will happen to them?

This exciting mystery will have boys and girls alike avidly reading through its pages to discover if the bikes are found, and if they are, who the finders are, the boys or the girls.

Although this is a boys v girls story, throughout it the author has interwoven important life lessons of teamwork, friendship, loyalty, determination and compassion.

Reading it to my grandson, took me back to my childhood, playing with my brother, having dens and great adventures together, however, none were as exciting as this!

About the Book: When a bike is stolen from the school bike sheds at Jug Valley Juniors, Tim forms a secret club with his friends Ben and Ludo to try to solve the crime. They call themselves the Handles. ‘This isn’t girls’ stuff,’ he tells his twin sister Amy. ‘It needs boys to handle it.’
To get back at the boys, Amy and her best friend Mini jokingly call themselves the Spouts…but it’s no longer a joke when Mum’s lovely bike is stolen, too, giving the girls a serious quest of their own. And so the rival detectives go into action – mainly against each other.
Yet they should be working together if they want to avoid danger….

Dying For Revenge (The Lady Doc Murders Book 1) by Barbara Golder

51tkqgufxkl-_ac_us160_

This enthralling murder mystery is set in Telluride, Colorado, at Mountain Village, once a sleepy ranch town, it is now the place to live, with many of the rich and famous having homes there.

One of its residents is the favourite leading man of the moment, Mitch Houston, who seems to have it all, however, all this changes when his wife receives a phone call from a reporter, giving her news which will change their lives forever.

For the Western Slope of Colorado Chief Medical Examiner, Jane Wallace, Tuesday June 6th starts very early with a phone call from Sheriff Tom Patterson, there’s been a murder, and of course she must attend.

Five years have passed since the death of her beloved husband John, and Jane has never come to terms with the loss, she is living with it every day. Her other children have flown the nest, and now she lives with her son Ben, finding great comfort in her church, and she enjoys the company of the new young priest Father Matt. It is he who introduces her to Eoin Connor, a true crimes author.

One death is a tragedy, however, as the death toll steadily rises, it soon becomes apparent that the killer must be found, but there is only clue, the killer’s weapon of choice is a .22 rifle. Not much to go on.

Throughout the book there are many small stories giving the reader snapshot insights into the varied lives of its main characters, and building such a depth to the story that it is simply totally enthralling.

I loved reading this very cleverly written murder mystery, which was packed full of suspense, and can’t wait for Book 2 to be released.

81veu4s5t9l-_sx150_About the Author: Dr. Barbara Golder is a late literary bloomer. Although she’s always loved books (and rivals Jane in the 3-deep-on-the-shelf sweepstakes), her paying career gravitated to medicine and law. She has served as a hospital pathologist, forensic pathologist, and laboratory director. Her work in forensic pathology prompted her to get a law degree, which she put to good use as a malpractice attorney and in a boutique practice of medical law, which allowed her to be a stay-at-home mom when her children were young. She has also tried her hand at medical politics, serving as an officer in her state medical association; lobbying at a state and national level on medical issues, writing and lecturing for hire, including a memorable gig teaching nutritionists about the joys of chocolate for 8 straight hours, teaching middle and high school science, and, most recently, working for a large disability insurance company from which she is now retired. Her writing career began when she authored a handbook of forensic medicine for the local medical examiner office in 1984. Over the years she wrote extensively on law and medicine and lectured on medicolegal topics. On a lark, she entered a contest sponsored by the Telluride Times Journal and ended up with a regular humor column that memorialized the vagaries of second-home living on the Western Slope. She currently lives on Lookout Mountain, Tennessee with two dogs, two cats and her husband of 41 years.

About the Book: “Barbara Golder joins the ranks of Chesterton’s bloodthirsty heirs as she spins a tale that will delight mystery fans. With Dying for Revenge in hand, your beach experience is now complete!” Mark P. Shea, Author of Mercy Works Someone is killing the rich and famous residents of Telluride, Colorado, and the medical investigator, Dr. Jane Wallace, is on a collision course with the murderer. Compelled by profound loss and injustice, Jane will risk her own life to protect others from vengeful death, even as she exacts a high price from those who have destroyed her world. DYING FOR REVENGE is a story of love, obsession and forgiveness, seen through the eyes of a passionate, beautiful woman trying to live her life — imperfectly but vibrantly — even if she won’t survive.

The Jerusalem Inception by Avraham Azrieli

51edhadb6gl-_ac_us160_

The book begins by setting the scene, it is midnight 1944, and Tanya, a young Jewish girl is in a car with her lover, and saviour, General Klaus Koenig. Klaus Koenig is meeting with his old school friend, and banker Armande Hoffgeitz for the last time, Germany is losing the war and the last of the jewels taken from the victims at the concentration camps must be hidden away safely.

But waiting to ambush the car are Elie and Abraham, renegade Jews, intent in wreaking revenge on the Germans for the monstrosities they are committing.

When Elie and Abraham find Tanya, they allow her to stay with them. Soon she and Abraham fall in love. However their happiness is brief, when Elie returns from a raid alone…

Now we jump forward 21 years, and discover that Abraham did not die, but is instead the very important leader of the Neturay Karta, a fiercely anti-Zionist Orthodox sect in Jerusalem.

Tanya is now a respected Mossad secret agent, but her feelings have never died for the handsome young man she thought she’s lost all those years ago.

Therefore, when she discovers he is alive, she has to meet him. However, he is married now, and has a 17 year old son, Jerusalem, or Lemmy, who is a Talmudic scholar. What’s more Abraham is using his important religious standing for another purpose, doing what he feels he must, in a desperate attempt to prevent a second Holocaust.

The repercussions for Abraham’s family are far reaching, and young Lemmy’s life changes in ways he could never have imagined, causing him to question his Talmudic lessons, and things he always believed were true.

Set in a turbulent, modern Jerusalem, this eye-opener of a book tells the story of three people, all survivors of WWII, and how their survival shaped their lives, and made them determined, in their own different ways, to ensure the horrors inflicted on the Jews would never be repeated again.

This book gives an amazing insight into what it was like to live in Jerusalem during those turbulent times, the differences between the Zionists and anti-Zionists, and a glimpse into the government workings, secrets, and agents behind the scenes. Also, as a non-Jewish reader, I enjoyed learning about the Jewish beliefs, and traditions, and finding out about the motivation and leadership behind such an extreme group as the Neturay Karta.

Woven within its pages are secrets and lies, loves lost and hidden, resentment and betrayal.

This amazing story develops in ways in which the reader would never have imagined, and I thoroughly recommend it to mystery and suspense thriller fans.

Remember the Future by Bryant Delafosse

51yemg1czl-_ac_us160_

Grant Frederickson is a man destroyed, he has lost his beloved wife, and now is targeted by Houston gangster Arturo Torres, hounded for debts he cannot pay. With the world on his shoulders, and Rudy, Torres’ henchman watching him all the time, there is no escaping the corner he has got himself into, but what does he care, he has nothing to live for…

Then, just when he is at his lowest, resigned to his fate, a young woman called Maddy jumps into his car, and beseeches him for help. She is fleeing from pursuers who she calls ‘Blank Men,’ men who are determined to capture her.

Suddenly, his problems take a back seat as he finds himself protecting her. But who is this Maddy, this mysterious young woman with a hidden past and incredible abilities, and why are the Blank Men hunting her?

Soon he finds his life inextricably entwined with hers, and can’t help but ask himself more and more, was their meeting really coincidental, or was it destiny? As their flight leads them to New Orleans he wonders, will they find answers there?

I believe that this book will appeal to readers, like myself, who love a truly unique story, with plenty of twists, turns, and which keeps you guessing until the very last page.

About the author:

A native Texan, Bryant Delafosse currently lives in Southern California with his wife, son, and two terriers, Luna and Jules. His two previous novels include the supernatural thrillers HALLOWED and THE MALL. His latest Suspense/Thriller REMEMBER THE FUTURE is available now exclusively through Amazon Kindle.

About the book:

Grant Frederickson finds the words “Time to pay” spray-painted on the walls of his apartment and is given twenty-four hours to come up with the money he owes a Houston gangster or die.

With nothing to live for, Grant chooses to accept the consequences and turn himself over to the criminal he believes murdered his wife a year ago.

Before he can, Grant finds himself in the right place at the right time to protect a mysterious woman, fleeing two dark-suited pursuers who she calls the Blank Men.

But was their meeting truly accidental? Maddy seems to know more than she should—not just about Grant, but about the Future itself and where it will inevitably lead them: To New Orleans and Death.

From the author of HALLOWED and THE MALL, comes the new fast-paced thriller one review calls: “a mystery packed with action.”

The Starlight Club 8: Elvis: A World Full Of Movie Stars, Gentlemen and Killers… by Joe Corso

All I can say is wow. After finishing The Starlight Club 7 on a cliff-hanger, and his fans not knowing if there would be another Starlight Club, the master of storytelling Joe Corso has once again well and truly pulled the cat out of the bag with this super story.

One of the endearing things to me is the way these Starlight stories start, with Bobby remembering a tale about the Starlight Club days, Red, Trenchie, Tarzan and all the gang. As he reminisces to his daughter Lynn, these wonderful stories of times gone past come to life, and how! The author is a master at taking you back to Queens, this time in the 1970’s and introducing you to its characters, gangsters, and celebrities. Personally, I think is the best book to date, and I have read them all.

In it we join Red as his dreams for the resurrection of the old Starlight Club are realised, and a new era begins, as, sad to be parted from his actress wife Tiffany, he decides to increase interest in the movie industry to building another studio, but this time in New York.

The main theme of this book, as the title suggests, is the supposed staged death of Elvis Presley. The author has thoroughly researched this hypothesis and the result is a story which is fascinatingly detailed and whether you have firm ideas before you read this, by the end you will find yourself wondering, could he still be alive? Is this book true?

However, as with all the Starlight books there are many subplots which feature all the well known and loved characters from the Starlight series. All these books can be read as a stand-alone, however the characters do follow through and evolve.

Just one of the subplots is when Trenchie, Red’s right hand man finds that a good deed goes wrong when he is called in to help, when the ex-first ladies daughter goes missing. However nothing could have prepared him for the ex-first lady herself or for the way the plot unfolds. This story could have been a book on its own!

Fans of the Starlight Club series will not be disappointed in this, the latest book. I have loved reading every page of this cleverly written story, laced with intrigue, murder, a thrilling storyline, and the lifetime’s experience this author has of living in Queens.

About the Author: I’m a Korea Veteran. I Retired from the FDNY and I Grew up in Queens, New York. I started writing late in life hoping to help my grandchildren pay for their college education. I found to my surprise that I could tell a good story which resulted in my writing 29 books, garnering 19 awards and becoming a 4 time top 100 best selling author.

Go figure… If I would have known I could tell a good story. I would have started writing a half century ago.

About the book: Elvis’s had the most recognized name in the world. His first name drew people to his concerts like metal scrapings to a magnet. He was every promoter’s dream. He was magnetic, handsome and talented, and after twenty years of making movies and performing in front of thousands of his fans he had everything a man could want. He had done it and he had it all. He had nothing more to prove. As time went on he began to hate his lifestyle. After twenty years It became repetitious to the extreme. His fame locked him in his home, He couldn’t leave his house to go to go to a ballgame, or a movie or to the local grocery store to buy a cigar. His fame made him a prisoner in his home, trapped and his fame bound him tighter than the chains of a felon. Elvis had many millions of dollars in cash and in banks and he wanted to quit, to escape, but how could he do that when he was a money making machine to the movie studios, the record companies, the casinos? How could he escape? How could he regain his freedom and live a normal life like everyone else? The answer was simple. What if he faked his death? Was is possible he could he do that… escape? Was faking his death the means to free himself?
