The Starlight Club 7: End Game by Joe Corso

51Z8JtnnalL__AC_US160_

Although they live apart, Bobby has a wonderful relationship with his daughter Lynn, and she never tires of hearing his tales of the Starlight Club in Queens, New York. So, as they wait for the snow to clear before Bobby returns home, he tells her of a pivotal time in its history…

Suddenly he’s back in 1962, and the boys are at the Zebra Club celebrating the return of their mate Renato after his discharge from the army. However, when they witness a friend being beaten up across the road, they take chase. When they catch up however, in the blink of an eye the situation changes, as they could do in those days, and Renato is beaten nearly to death by the gang’s leader, Sailor Burke.

Now Bobby jumps forward to 1965, and at the Starlight Club Tarzan is suggesting a new barman for the club, none other than the aforementioned Renato Mellina. Red remembers him, and after a little talk about loyalty and family he is hired.

Soon however trouble comes knocking at Red’s door in the form of Aldo Zinera who has been hired to head the new government F.B.I task force on organised crime. He has a vendetta against Red, and leaving no room for doubt, or error, Aldo quickly informs Red that he will get him, uncover his crimes and see him sent to prison.

Realising the very ‘real’ danger he is in, and knowing that it is possible for charges to be made to stick, Red embarks on a fight, literally for his life.

Always used to taking care of his people, Red now has to look after himself and his new wife. Soon he realises there is only one course of action left open to him which will stop the vindictive Aldo.

It is drastic, however, once resolved, Red wastes no time in setting his plan in action, calling in favours and getting on with the job. It’s not the time for regrets, now is the time for action!

Undaunted, the plan is carried out, however, things hot up almost out of control as Red and his men find themselves literally fighting for their lives.

The question is – can Red pull the right strings, has he the necessary clout to survive?

With a fantastic storyline and brilliant characters this book is action packed right to the last page. Imaginative subplots, revenge, passion, love and betrayal, the Starlight Club 7 has it all, and is definitely a winner for all crime thriller fans.

As it closes, I ask myself, although this is called ‘End Game’ and is it truly the end of an era?

As the last page is read, only one person has that answer, and that’s the author, Joe Corso.

About the author: I’m a Korea Veteran. I Retired from the FDNY and I Grew up in Queens, New York. I started writing late in life hoping to help my grandchildren pay for their college education. I found to my surprise that I could tell a good story which resulted in my writing 29 books, garnering 18 awards and becoming a 4 time top 100 best selling author.

Go figure… If I would have known I could tell a good story. I would have started writing a half century ago.

Lafitte’s Treasure by Joe Corso

6585687_origThis book begins way back in the past, and Governor Claiborne of Louisiana’s refusal to meet with the pirate Jean Lafitte, denouncing him as a “Hellish Banditti,” a decision which was to affect the lives of future generations of both families, and others.

For in 1813, the British had approached Jean Lafitte, asking them to join them in fighting the Americans, they had no idea of what sort of a man he was. He was a pirate, yes, but he was also a mason and lived his life by their codes of honour. Luckily, General Jackson recognised those codes and virtues also, and the rest as they say is history…

The decisions we make in life not only affect us, and the lives of those around us, but their repercussions can be felt, as ripples, far into the future. Eventually though these ripples do start to settle, and so it is, that through chance events and discoveries, the lives of two people, who had previously never met, converge.

The legacies, left to Eddie, and Julianna, bond them as they embark on their exciting and dangerous adventure. Following clues left in the past, they travel to New Orleans on their quest to discover the lost treasure, however, they are not the only ones who know about it, other’s want it too, and will do anything to procure it.

This story, for me, it has all the vital ingredients, action, adventure, murder, mystery, and romance. This author’s attention to detail has meant that he has also added a lot of fascinating history about New Orleans and the famous pirate Jean Lafitte.

Engine 24: Fire Stories 1, 2 and 3 by Joe Corso

Fascinating stories.

FIRE STORIES 123

About the book: Now, all in one complete book, Joe Corso’s ENGINE 24: FIRE STORIES BOOKS 1, 2, AND 3, including the AWARD-WINNING FIRE STORIES: BOX 598!
ENGINE 24: FIRE STORIES BOOKS 1, 2, AND 3 chronicles the career of Joe D’Albert, aka author Joe Corso, as a New York City firefighter. In this exciting compilation of fire stories, Corso details the triumphs and tragedies of his comrades-in-arms as they bravely battle some of the most dangerous fires in the history of the city. He tells of real life heroes and of lifelong friendships formed, as well as some of the turmoil that existed in New York City during his time with the department. Follow Corso through the 60s and 70s, and to the present day, from race riots to 9/11, when actual flames of unrest were doused by the bravest people in recent American history.

About Joe Corso: I grew up in Queens,New York and my motivation to write came from my wish to help my grandchildren pay for their college education. So far I’ve completed 13 novels and a number of short stories including my popular ‘ENGINE 24 FIRE STORIES’ trilogy and I’ve just finished the 5th installment in the ‘TIME PORTAL’ series.

I’m just completed ‘LAFITTE’S TREASURE’ and then I plan to revisit ‘THE STARLIGHT CLUB 5 which I shelved about a year ago, When that book is finished I will write a sequel to my western ‘THE ADVENTURES OF THE LONE JACK KID’, titled ‘THE RETURN OF THE LONE JACK KID’.

This book is a compilation of the three books Engine 24: Fire Stories written by retired New York City fire fighter Joe Corso, and dedicated to the members of Engine 24 of the New York City Fire Department.

If you are looking for action, suspense, dangerous situations, and want to feel as if you are actually walking into those blazing buildings with the fire snaking around you, then these are the stories for you, written from notes taken after fires fought by the author and his comrades.

They also provide a very interesting history of New York, over the years. Not only the famous fires but also the race riots, secret places, and the horses role in the fire service. For me personally, however, these stories are compelling reading because they are personal, one man’s recollections of his life in the fire fighting service, snapshots in time, one offs, which can never be repeated ever again…

In one of the stories, he tells, is of his first day as a fire fighter. As you sit, reading his description of that day, written from the heart, so many years later, you feel as if you are there, a silent witness, watching the young Joe as he meets his fellow workers for the first time and they take him under their wing. These are the men who taught him, brave, dedicated, and loyal, and these same qualities they installed in him, and he has striven to emulate, throughout his career.

Reading these stories it is easy to understand the close bonds, which these brave men have with their comrades. When they are facing such unpredictable danger, it is imperative they can trust them, literally with their lives, and that trust must be earned. As a result, they become a close family, and the care they have for each other reaches far beyond the Fire Station walls.

I have loved reading these stories, for me, they have everything, action, suspense, history but above all, human interest.  I wish he would write more…

Engine 24: Fire Stories 3 by Joe Corso

Wonderful compulsive reading.

FIRE STORIES 3

About the book: The final book in the Engine 24 Fire Stories trilogy focuses on the more turbulent times that firefighters had to endure in New York City during the years 1963 to 1975.
In this book, the era of Kennedy’s assassination, race riots, and looting are related through the eyes of a NYC firefighter. Joe Corso describes where he was and what the reactions of the firemen and officers were the day that President Kennedy was killed.
The author describes what it felt like to be detailed to La Casa Grande – “The Big House.”
Engine 82 was one of the busiest fire companies in the world during the race riots of the 60s. It was located in the Fort Apache section of the Bronx – and the tenseness of always having to be on guard in a hostile environment in which those men had to work is shared in gritty detail.
Corso writes of how one good firefighter lost and then regained his nerve; he writes of fires long forgotten and how, over the last 50 years, our moral codes have changed, especially pertaining to one fire that happened many years ago on Bedford Street in the West Village.

Go figure. If I would have known that I could write a good story. I would have started writing a half century ago.

———-

I have loved reading the previous Engine 24 Fire Stories series of books and couldn’t wait to start this one. The author Joe Corso is a retired New York fire fighter and his memories of the different incidents he has attended over the years as part of the Engine 24 crew are compulsive reading.

As Joe tells his stories, he sets the scene beautifully, taking the reader with him through memory lane deep into blazing buildings and dangerous situations. In this book, we stand alongside him as he watches the looting and race riots of yester years, and discovers some of the mysterious and secret places, which exists below New York City. Through one of the stories we are reminded how much morals have changed in current years and, wait by the phone with him, years later, as with bated breath, he hears the fate of his old company in 9/11.

Reading these books you quickly discover that to be a fire fighter, you not only have to be incredibly brave, you also have to have absolute faith in your comrades and know you can trust fellow crew members literally with your life. These men form deep bonds of friendships, which often last a lifetime and become a family, close, and supportive of each other.

Telling a good story is an art, and to be able to write that story as well is a real gift, the author Joe Corso definitely talented beyond words.

Review by Susan Keefe

Detective Max Larkin has just returned to work in the Rockton Police Department after being suspended for withholding information, following his solving of the ‘Time Killer’ murders with his partner Jesse.

Straight away, Captain Perry has another case for the partners to solve. Professor Lawrence Finestein has been found dead, under unusual circumstances. As the detectives’ try to discover a motive, who was responsible, and what made the killer brand his victim, the need for answers becomes more urgent as other victims start to appear, each with the same calling card.

Unfortunately, Max and Jesse just do not seem to be able to agree when the killer is caught and soon a rift appears, one which must be healed for the sake of everybody. As the tension mounts, new discoveries are made and it’s time for Max and Jesse put their differences aside and work together.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this fast moving crime thriller. Right from page one it is action packed, with plenty of twists and turns, and a storyline, which keeps the reader guessing, right until the end.

An excellent second story in the Max Larkin Detective series, I look forward to reading more.

Engine 24 Fire Stories 2 by Joe Corso

Amazing stories from a retired fire fighter.

Product Details

About the book: Every firefighter has a treasure trove of interesting stories to tell and the stories more often than not are instructional as well as exciting. When I was a firefighter, I kept notes of the fires I responded to. Now that I am retired, I have reflected on my career as a firefighter and have written a second book about the men alongside whom I worked, facing dangerous situations daily.

This book is a compilation of eight short FIRE stories written between 1963 and 1972, from notes I wrote after returning from fires. The first story explores the emotions felt when reporting for duty for the first time. The same emotions felt by all firefighters throughout the world on their first day on the job.

An inexplicable bond forms between men and women who face danger on a daily basis and who have been tested – and have passed the test. From the combat soldier, to the policeman and the firefighter – a bond of love and trust has formed that will last a lifetime.

About Joe Corso: I grew up in Queens, New York and I began writing in an attempt to raise money to pay for my grandchildren’s college education. I’ve written 12 books and 7 short stories. Right now I’m working on the fifth installment of The Starlight Club. When It’s completed I’d like to write a sequel to the Lone Jack Kid which is a finalist in the 2013 Readers Favorite book contest in the Western category. The Starlight Club won the silver in the 2012 eLit TRUE CRIME category, and was awarded Honorable Mention in the 2013 Readers Favorite book contest. My short story FIRE: Box 598 won the bronze in the 2013 Readers Favorite contest, in the historical non-fiction category. Go figure. If I would have known I could write a good story, I would have started writing a half century ago.

Review by Susan Keefe:

In this book, I was intrigued to learn about Joe’s very first days as a fire fighter. I will be the first to openly admit that I love Joe Corso’s stories about his career, and, as he recounts his memories, I felt as if I was transported into the very soul of the young Joe. He describes his very first day and meeting the men he was to worked with, men whose courage and dedication he strove to emulate throughout his career. Experienced fire fighters ,who took the young rookie under their wing, guided and encouraged him, whilst all the time instilling in him the firm codes and values they worked by.

There’s so much in this book. The Prologue, which has been researched by members of the IAFF tells  the history of the Maltese Cross, which is the international symbol of the fire service. I loved reading Joe’s recollections of the alarm calls they went on, the unusual characters he met, and how this close knit brotherhood of men dealt with the odd bad apple or two. I also discovered that there are many types of fires, and whilst all are dangerous, the smoke alone given off of the source materials of some can be deadly. Then the history of the old fire brigade building came to life, as Joe and his friend had to recover the old fire station journals from the roof space, and discover other things, stored there.

At the end, Joe has looked back at the animal hero’s of the service, the brave fire horses and included an interesting and humorous article by Jim Blanchard of the Saugus Fire Department and a fantastic photograph.

What can I say, this book captivated me, I just could not put it down. I loved reading of the true comradeship, loyalty and brotherhood of these brave men as seen through the eyes of the author as a young man, and the pictures within were just fantastic to see – the icing on the cake as they say.

Review by Susan Keefe

In this, the second book in the Roma Series, the story opens with Alabaster Black (alias Bianca Nerini) returning from Rome to Boston, Massachusetts, leaving behind her lover, Dante, and friends in Rome, Italy.

Rendition, her employer, a covert U.S. agency, has persuaded her to infiltrate Nasonia Pharmaceuticals, a drug manufacturing company owned by Cyril Sargent. Nasonia, is working on a revolutionary new drug using insect-based genetics to develop a new cancer-cure and Rendition want to know more.

Then, when Farrugia and Gennaro, her friends from the Rome, arrive in Boston for another reason, she discovers that leaving the past behind is not as simple as just getting on a plane; they bring some disturbing news for her, ghosts from the past have resurfaced…

I found Wasp’s Nest a compelling reading, action-packed and with intriguing characters. The plot had plenty of twists and turns, some surprising secrets, and it kept me on the edge of my seat, guessing until the very end.

Gabriel Valjan includes a tantalising glimpse into Book 3 of the Roma Series, Threading the Needle which I had read first, but I realized that the author created each volume independent of each other.

Review by Susan Keefe:

Isidore Farrugia is a cop, brought up during the Years of Lead, a horrific period in Italian history, a time of terror and killing, his childhood memories, scarred forever by the brutal death of his mother. Nevertheless, he is a good man, loyal and protective of his friends and colleagues.

This is why although off duty and out of jurisdiction, when his friend Bianca arranges a meeting with her informant, Charles Brooks, he insists on coming too. However, soon his onlooker role changes, when the young 23-year-old American, Bianca came to meet is killed, and so are his assassins.

Then another murder takes place, and the Italian police investigators find themselves unearthing a web of political intrigue.

Bianca has a secret though, she knows, she must uncover the truth behind the information she has been entrusted with, despite warnings from her mysterious online contact Loki, to stay away. Adastra, a weapons manufacturer is hiding something… But what?

I found myself hooked, right from the start of this brilliant, action packed, political crime thriller, which is set in Milan.

For those, like myself, who are interested in history, the Afterword about the Years of Lead by Claudio Ferrara was very interesting.

This is actually the third book in the ‘Roma’ series, by this talented author, and there is a tantalising glimpse at the end into his fourth book, ’Turning to Stone.’

FIRE: Mutual Aid by Joe Corso

Exciting fire fighting true story.

Publisher: Black Horse Publishing; 1 edition (July 26, 2013)

ASIN: B00E6HRNK8

About Joe Corso:  I was born in 1935 and I grew up in Queens, New York. I started writing at the age of 75 hoping to raise money to send my grandchildren to better schools. In the past three years I’ve written 12 books and 6 short stories. Right now I’m working on The Starlight Club 5. After that I’m considering writing a sequel to the Lone Jack Kid which is a finalist in the 2013 Readers Favorite book contest. The Starlight Club won the silver in the 2012 eLit TRUE CRIME category, and is a finalist in the Readers Favorite 2013 book contest. My short story FIRE: Box 598 is also a finalist in the Readers Favorite short story category.

Go figure. If I would have known I could write a good story, I would have started my writing career a half century ago.

About the book: (The story that follows was written from notes I wrote on May 28, 1964, the day after the Jersey City Pier fire. The following paragraph is from an article that appeared in the third issue of W.N.Y.F in 1964, written by John J. Cunningham Deputy Assistant Chief of the Marine Division. He described the scene perfectly.)

Review by Susan Keefe

On the night of May 27, 1964, thousands of New York City residents, whose dwellings overlook the Hudson River in lower Manhattan, had ringside seats for a spectacular wind-fanned waterfront fire that lit up the Jersey shore. A fire that, before it was brought under control some hours later, taxed the combined efforts of four FDNY. marine companies, five FDNY. Engine companies, 16 JCFD fire companies, 14 Coast Guard Vessels, and 21 Pennsylvania R.R. tug boats. Units from nearby Bayonne, Hoboken, and West New York manned the vacant Jersey City firehouses. Residents as far away as Brooklyn discovered evidence of the fire on their sidewalks and lawns the following morning.

Some fires make news headlines, and the Jersey City Pier fire on 27th May 1964 was such a fire.

The author, Joe Corso was one of the fire fighting crew on Engine 24 when they responded to a call from the dispatcher – the Jersey City Fire Department was asking for Mutual Aid, they had a fire raging and needed help.

Gathering at the Holland Tunnel, they led a caravan of fire trucks towards the brightly lit skyline and into the inferno, which raged in the tall buildings at the waterfront and along the pier, threatening to spread down the coast.

United, with one goal, the fire crews worked in the extreme heat, using water from the Hudson River, fighting to halt the spread of the fire, grateful when the mighty fireboats arrive to take over.

This story is a fine example of the fire departments comradeship and mutual respect, brave men who pulled together to extinguish this raging inferno.

The author has also included in this book some interesting insights as to what it was like living there in the early 1960’s and some local information.
