In God We Trust: Morally Responsible Investing by George P. Schwartz

How to combine investing wisely with your moral responsibilities and beliefs.

What a refreshing book, I thoroughly applaud the ethics behind the Ave Maria Funds and its policy to offer investors the opportunity to invest in a manner consistent with their faith. Sounds too good to be true? Well read on, and discover how the Ave Maria Funds came to be and the values of the people who set up and manage them.

As indicated in the Forward by Lou Holtz, this is the sequel to ‘Good Returns, which he contributed to. In this new book, ‘In God We Trust the reader discovers the ever increasing more morally conscientious investors. In 2001 Gorge Schwartz the CEO of the Schwartz Investment Council Inc. was approached by Tom Monaghan the founder of Domino’s pizza and the late Bowie Kuhn Commissioner of Major League Baseball. Dedicated Catholics, they wanted to launch a series of investment vehicles – the Ave Maria Mutual Funds, which enabled investors to invest in a manner consistent with their faith. The funds would provide Morally Responsible Investing, identifying with companies which do not participate in, contribute to, or support abortion or pornography.

There are now five different mutual funds, all pro-life, pro-family, and dedicated to investing in companies which don’t violate the core principals of the Catholic Church.

These mutual funds each have a different objective, they are:

Ave Maria Value Fund

Ave Maria Growth Fund

Ave Maria Bond Fund

Ave Maria Rising Dividend Fund

Ave Maria World Equity Fund

What I loved about this book is that in it George Schwartz gives his reader a real insight into his life, upbringing, and the values he has been taught, and has lived by, in the Catholic faith. It is these things which has made him the man he is today, and the help of his wife Judi of course. It is also these strong moral principles which form the basis of the Ave Maria Funds.

However, right from the very first page this book’s subject is paramount. This is investing and principally about how to invest morally and responsibly. The authors offer a wealth of knowledge and experience in the field accumulated through many years. Throughout, sound, practical advice is freely given. In a world where greed is rife and everyone is keen to make a fast buck, wouldn’t you rather invest in a fund with strong, good moral principles?

This book’s values touched me personally, although I am not a catholic, and I found it extremely thought-provoking and interesting.

About the Book:

This book is both timely and timeless.

In God We Trust delves deeply into current economic and market developments and reflects on how U.S. prosperity has returned in 2018, as capitalism has again been unleashed. The author says, “What a relief after eight years of economic stagnation and government over-regulation.” Oddly, as the U.S. economy has benefited from pro-growth policies, like tax rate cuts and deregulation, there exists a rising tide of sympathy for socialism among leftist politicians and young people.

This timeless divide between capitalism and socialism is explored within the context of the economic and moral ramifications for society in general and long-term investors, specifically.

Readers with historical perspective will appreciate the logic of what should be obvious, i.e. that socialism has never worked anywhere on earth. Or aptly put by President Ronald Reagan, “Socialism can only work in two places, heaven where they don’t need it, and hell where they already have it.”

This book is about participating in the capital markets while avoiding morally objectionable businesses. As a lover of the free enterprise system and a portfolio manager, George Schwartz chronicles how Morally Responsible Investing is helping long-term investors put their money to work in accordance with their moral beliefs. His firm manages Ave Maria Mutual Funds, which were founded in 2001. These pro-life and pro-family mutual funds have attracted over 100,000 shareholders, who have invested more than $2.2 billion in five separate award-winning mutual funds.

Big Things Have Small Beginnings: Learn to Play the Great Game by Wes Berry

A practical and informative guide on how to succeed in business.

The author of this enlightening and extremely informative book writes from a lifetime in business. His vast span of knowledge encompasses the whole spectrum, from starting out, learning the hard way, choosing your market, employing the right sort of people, and the importance of dedication and attention to detail.

It is this attention to detail which he emphasises throughout the book, highlighting that it is the little things to one person, which matter so much to someone else. This is a very important message, and this book is littered with examples of good business practice which he has excelled at, or failed in, but through the experience he learnt where he went wrong, and passes the information down to you, the reader.

A patriotic American, a husband, and father of four sons, Wes Berry was given a 10% share of his parents flower business as a young man. Ambitious, self-disciplined, and driven by a determination to succeed, he was encouraged by his father to implement his new ideas into the business, as long as they didn’t cost money…

Right from the beginning there is so much to learn from this book, and it is all there just waiting for the hungry would be businessman or woman to ingest. From mapping out your future goals, to meeting deadlines and targets, and the strategies you will need to utilise to achieve them.

He looks at what gets you up in the morning, and encourages you to determine what your motivation is, to grasping those dream and making them happen. Gives examples of famous influencers throughout history in many fields, and encourages us to embrace the messages which have become their legacy.

There can be no doubt that ‘A Message to Garcia’ by Elbert Hubbard, which is included in the book, has had a deep impact on the author, especially with regard to employing people. Before reading this I admit I had never heard of it, however, once read, it is easy to understand the importance of employing and encouraging employees with the ‘Rowan Trait’ which simply explained is a no-holds-barre commitment to getting a task done.

Jam packed with information from cover to cover, this book contains all the motivation, and advice anyone could need to succeed in their chosen business career.

About the Book:

“Ambition is a powerful sword, especially when it’s wielded by a person of integrity.” – Wes Berry

Wes Berry built a remarkable $60 million-dollar international business from his family’s small florist shop, which began in Detroit. Now, in his extraordinary new book, he shares what he has learned over the years about leadership and business growth.

It is his belief that, to play in the Great Game, you must accept that winning and losing are both part of the same experience. Gleaning from his personal endeavors in business, Wes instructs and encourages you to take full responsibility as a leader. Drawing on insights from great leaders throughout history, he guides you in learning to do the key tasks that made them successful—tasks that will enable you to find complementary employees and associates whom you can help develop in the very same way.

With each turn of the page, you’ll gain knowledge from strategists such as Sun Tzu, General Douglas MacArthur and Sam Houston that will help you grow in business as well as life. Everyone has to start somewhere. As Wes himself has learned, those Small Beginnings often inexorably lead to some mighty Big Things!

99 Creative WOWs Words of Wisdom for Business – Motivational Gift Idea for Entrepreneurs, Business Owners, and Creative Thinkers by Randi Brill

Priceless WOWs from Randi Brill

The author of this highly motivational book at the age of 14 knew she was ‘Going to be in charge of something,’ and sure enough she has been in her own words ‘in charge of several “somethings” since then.’

Randi Brill received a BFA in Graphic Design from Carnegie Mellon University, and then her education really began in the real world! The experience she has gained so far in her working career through, hard work, forward thinking, the determination to succeed, and real guts made her the woman she is today. She admits to using personally, and sharing as Chief Creative Officer of QuaraCORE, WOWs or Words of Wisdom every day. It is her belief in the power of these that instigated her to produce this inspiring book so others can be energised and learn by them too.

The WOWs are categorised into Business, Personal and Creative, although the author says that they may well overlap for the reader. The whole book is so bright and attractively displayed that it is quick and inviting to read, yet the WOWs are so motivating that they stick in your mind.

Whether you are launching a new business, resurrecting an old one or looking to change your career or direction, these words of wisdom will not only inspire and motivate you, they will also give you food for thought. What I really loved about this book is that many of the words of wisdom come from experience and for me, and I am sure for you, they will either ring a bell straight away or if not, I am sure they will come to mind at some time in the future when you are in a particular situation.

The amazing achievements of this author in themselves are an inspiration, and in reading this fantastic book we are fortunate enough to gain from her words of wisdom, derived from her vast experience. This little book is a gold mine of tips and one I shall treasure for always and re-read frequently!

About the Author:
I was 14 years old when my mother introduced me to someone who asked me what I planned to BE when I grew up. According to my mother, I impatiently responded in a matter-of-fact tone that I was going to be in charge of something. While not much else went according to any of my other 14-year-old master plans, that part turned out to be true. I have been in charge of several “somethings” since then. As a creative entrepreneur, I color outside the lines—for a living. I wrote my first sales order in crayon at 3. With $57 to my name, 22 years later I launched my first official business, Quarasan, in the basement of a four-room house. For over 30 years, I successfully grew that company into a dynamic educational product development firm, creating and producing top educational programs for the nation’s leading publishers. During that time and since, I have started—and stopped—multiple creative entities. My formal education at Carnegie Mellon University ended with a BFA in Graphic Design. I was vaguely aware that CMU prepared its graduates to lead, not follow. My extended education began exactly where CMU prepared me to go—the leadership hot seat. The design education I received from CMU was an excellent foundation to run my first creative business, but it wasn’t enough. Until I did my post-graduate work at Randi’s Real-World University, majoring in Take Smart Risks with a double minor in Figure It Out and Gee, That Really Didn’t Work, I had little idea what it really takes to succeed in business. Today I do—through this book, I’m delighted to share some of these discoveries with you.

Rule #1 Don’t Be #2 by Daniel Milstein

NEW RELEASE – TODAY!

THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE FOR BUSINESS OWNERS AND ENTREPRENEURS – RULE #1 DON’T BE #2

If you don’t sell yourself nobody else will!

This book is a true gem, it is empowering, inspirational, ruthlessly honest, but most importantly it is probably the most outstandingly motivational book you will ever read, if you REALLY want your dream to come true.

Why? Because it’s written by a man who knows what he’s talking about. You see, in 1991, Daniel Milstein and his parents arrived in America, they were fleeing the religious and political persecution which raged in their native Soviet Union. Daniel Milstein at 16, had only 17 cents in his pocket, however even at that young age, he was richer than most, why, simply because he had a win/win mind-set, a positive outlook, guts and determination. With these assets, from that moment, although he himself didn’t realise it, he was already on his way to achieving the American Dream.

What I liked about this book is that it is so full of inspiring stories. However, this doesn’t mean his message is sugar coated, certainly not! This is a man who tells it as it is, and freely admits that his philosophy runs along the lines of a swift kick in the pants.

Throughout he insists that success lies in attitude, and action, dreaming is no good, it is futile to wait for luck to come your way, the right time, approval from others. You MUST work hard, grab those chances, and not fear failure. Should things not go well, then use the experience as a learning curve, and take a lesson from Arianna Huffington’s mother, who told her daughter (Founder of The Huffington Post) ‘Failure is not the opposite of success; it’s a steppingstone to success.’

Complacency is another very important factor Daniel Milstein covers. It is essential that you remember you can never rest on your laurels. “Success is never owned. It is rented and the rent is due every day!” is his motto. When you succeed be pleased, but don’t become content with your lot, your competitor is waiting to step in your shoes as soon as you lapse, so make sure you don’t!

Persistency is vital. Whatever your dream, go with it, and don’t give up. Should you fail the first, second, third… time then continue to persevere. He provides examples of many well-known names from the MacDonald brothers, Henry Ford, to the inspirational Jim Eisenreich, people who didn’t give up, or listen to those negative influences. Through the motivational quotes and messages strewn copiously throughout the book, the reasons why those who succeed do so, are laid out in plain sight for you to see. Be brave, think outside the box, follow that dream, and then dream bigger, and better. Remember success might not happen overnight, but if you never go for it, you can never win. So stick with it, work hard and learn from those around you and, you will make it.

Eighty-six percent of millionaires are self-made, and two thirds of the world’s billionaires made their fortune from scratch – so what’s stopping you?

Pick up a copy of this book and follow the authors guide to success, learn from him, and others then show the world just what you can achieve!

Killing the Market: Legendary Investor Robert W. Wilson by Roemer McPhee

30226926

This book is about the life and 40 year career in the financial market of Robert W. Wilson.

Robert W. Wilson was an investor and philanthropist, a man driven to succeed. He made brave investments, followed his own council, and was filled with grit, and the determination. It is these qualities which have led him to be called the greatest investor of our time.

He starting out with $15,000 from his mother in 1958 and had the ethos that ‘[to be an investor], money has to be the most important thing in the world to you.’ Through clever investing and sheer hard work, using other people’s money, his fortune grew astronomically over the years, and just before his death in 2013 he had a net worth of $800 million.

This small book is packed with interesting information about the companies Robert W. Wilson was involved in, which include many of the giants such as Lockheed Aircraft Corporation, Atari, Compaq Computer Corp, Burroughs, Pizza Time Theater, American Airlines and Federal Express.

I also touches sensitively in his personal life and passions, such as the opera, and his interest in nature, wildlife and conservation, all of which he supported fervently.

He handled his affairs with control and dignity, and this included his suicide in 2013. He left a note saying “I had a rewarding life. Thank you and goodbye to all my friends. Please make sure you cancel all my plans. Tell everyone what I did. I’m not ashamed of killing myself. Sell all my stuff,” the note read, according to law-enforcement sources.”

The author of this short book has treated the reader to an in-depth look at the life of this amazing man, and what made him tick, it is interesting, inspirational and I highly recommend it.

About Roemer McPhee:

Roemer McPhee was born in Washington D.C. and resided there for several years while his father was special legal counsel to President Eisenhower. At age 17, he attended Princeton University, where he studied history, then turned to business school at Wharton, as he was always interested in money and investing. After working as a trader for Morgan Stanley for two years, he now works as a private investor and is very active in the futures market and cash markets. In his free time, McPhee likes to play squash and tennis, and enjoys cycling. He also loves to sail, and travel. Aside from his new book on Wilson, McPhee is the author of the book The Boomer’s Guide to Story: A Search for Insight in Literature and Film. McPhee is married and has one son. He lives in New York City.

About the book: Robert W. Wilson is the greatest investor of all time, on the only criterion that counts: percentage return on capital. What you make with what you have, what you started out with. Wilson would be the first to point out that there are investors richer than himself; but on a percentage-return basis, he is unmatched, and untouched. He received $15,000 from his mother in 1958, and he ran this stake to the fabulous sum of $230 million, by 1986. With assistance he himself sought out, he then nearly quadrupled his net worth to $800 million, by the year 2000. This return, after taxes no less, is more than 50,000 to one. More than 5,000,000 percent. Wilson did it in about forty years, without partners. How? How, possibly? This book, “Killing the Market,” tries to find, or at least get close to, an answer.
Robert Wilson quit the investing business in 1986, because he had “lost his touch,” as he said. The most productive of men, the hardest working of men, he started to move into philanthropy. Eventually he became just about the most important philanthropist in the United States. Of the $800 million he accumulated, he had given away fully $700 million of it at the time of his death, in 2013 (by his own hand). Movingly, Robert Wilson’s gifts were never to things that entertained him, or to pet projects; they were always to charities trying very hard to make the world a better place for everybody.

Unemployable! by David Thomas Roberts

image002

I was drawn to this book because of its title ‘Unemployable!’ I just love the title, as it was exactly what my now husband classified me as 10 years before we married when I was a self-employed mum working in his garden – and he was right I could never be employed by anyone else. I love the freedom too much!

I agree with everything that the author David Thomas Roberts has written. This book is absolutely packed with good advice. If you have the thirst to be your own boss then this is the book for you! It is practical, informative, down to earth and yet at the same time so inspirational.

This is not however a pie in the sky, opt out and follow your dream book, it is built on solid foundations and years of dedication to his businesses. The authors has experience both as a very successful man who made it (more than once), and, just as importantly as someone who looking back can see where, and why his businesses failed. These experiences have given him a real insight into what it REALLY takes to succeed.

Also, he doesn’t glaze over the not so pleasant parts like, finance, how important it is to be truthful to yourself as to whether you really are making money, relationships, partners and the tricky one of what to do when a family member wants to become part of your business.

David Thomas Roberts freely imparts his vast knowledge and anyone considering making themselves ‘unemployable’ would greatly benefit from taking heed his advice. Whether it is discovering if this sort of life and responsibilities are really right for you, or learning from his experiences with the tax man.

At one point in the book he reminisces about asking his respected father what he would have liked to do if he could have, and why he didn’t. Funnily enough, I asked the exact same question of my own father when he had ‘retired’ and started his own business, and got the exact same answer!

I cannot recommend this book highly enough, and am sure everyone who reads it will learn so much from its contents.

About the Author: David ThomasRoberts, known as the “Renegade Capitalist®”, is the founder and CEOof Teligistics, and is a bestselling author, public speaker and serialentrepreneur who, at the age of twenty-one, left the world of being employed bysomeone else for the rest of his life and became “UNEMPLOYABLE!” Robertsshares the lessons he’s learned from more than thirty-five years as anentrepreneur, the unconventional strategies he has deployed, and providesspecific how-to advice on starting a business and the secrets of beingsuccessfully independent – and sustaining it for the rest of your life.

About the Book: Roberts makes the case that this may be the greatest time in history to start a business! Using Roberts’ strategies and principles in this book, learn how to become “UNEMPLOYABLE!” your entire life! Most of us are taught to get a good education and a good job. The idea that we should be content to have someone else dictate our daily commute, our income, schedules and vacations is the accepted norm. To some, the idea of life in a cubicle eight hours a day is akin to torture! What does it really take for someone to jump off the employment treadmill and participate in the free enterprise system, unencumbered by traditionally accepted myths?

A Primal Wisdom: (SECOND EDITION) Nature’s Unifcation of Cooperation and Competition by V Frank Asaro

61hkrrycaHL__AA160_

Fascinating reading.

This book makes for fascinating reading. I am sure many sections of its contents will be cause for great debate by its readers, from politics and the gun laws, to space dust, and everything in-between.

V Frank Asaro has led a varied and incredibly interesting life. In this book he puts forward his theory of combining what one automatically thinks of as two opposite concepts, those of competition and cooperation into a combination, co-opetition, which he sees as nature’s synthesis.

The author started writing essays on this subject back in the 1970’s, and has been continually researching and studying his belief that discovering the asymmetric balance of the ultimate synthesises is a primal wisdom. This balance, he believes is key to world peace, improving the economy, politics, the social system, indeed nearly every area of human interaction.

Throughout the book he constantly gives examples of co-opetition, many of which we just take for granted, however he is right they exist everywhere. As an English expat living in France I thought his observations on the American gun laws, politics and military were very interesting. Last summer I spent a lovely afternoon with three American friends from California, discussing the carrying of guns, and I wish I had already read this book then. The whole situation gave an interesting insight into an area I had not read much about before, and had had no experience of.

As well as being the award winning author of A Primal Wisdom, V. Frank Asaro is also an inventor, philosopher, lawyer, musician and composer and it was these last two which made an interesting reading as he contemplated in one part of the book how music originally evolved.

This talented author has used his lifetimes experience and a firm belief in his principal of co-opetition to produce a fascinating, thought provoking book which will be talked about and debated for years to come.

About the Book: This groundbreaking award-winning book teaches the universal law of “co-opetition” (cooperation vs competition) to vastly improve the interrelationships of our lives, our politics and our economies both at home and between the peoples of the world, yet keep our good faith-rational principles, our freedoms and build even greater liberty for the individual—within a socially moral society.

How to Write a Novel in 90 Days written by Conrad Jones

How to write a novel in 90 days

A useful guide.

This book is written by a successful and prolific author who has used his experiences in an invaluable way, to produce a very good guide for authors.

Whether you do write your book in 90 days or not, this book offers sound information and guidelines on many points.
The author started his career having to juggle a ‘day’ job with his writing, and so he fully understands the pressures writers are put under both personally, by others, and situations around them.

As well as the expected advice on the importance of doing your homework, building characters, word counts and targets, the book is full of good ideas to improve your writing. The author has included some really good examples of how, by making changes to your writing style, you can make the same story scene much more interesting, and how to increase the sales and marketing opportunities by adding ‘hooks,’ which link the book to specific places etc.

His repetition of the importance of rewriting may sound a bit daunting, however, anyone who has written a book knows that this becomes second nature after a while.

No-one can guarantee that you write a best seller, the original ideas have to come from you, however, the amount of advice given in this book is phenomenal, and it is given in a no nonsense style.

Review by Susan Keefe

When running a business, whether you are a small cog in a giant wheel or have your own business of whatever size, if there are two or more people, then you have a team.
There is no business without customers, and customer satisfaction is essential to a successful business. Your team are the people who make that happen, this is not about sales figures or pie charts it is more fundamentally important than that, it is about the backbone to a successful business, its team.
The author has vast experience in team building, self-improvement, leadership, communications and time management.
This book is about you, and your team members.  Because, everyone is different, life moulds us all, and our experiences, as we travel its path, mean we are continually evolving. A person’s attitudes to their workplace, the way they feel about their job situation, and their value, affects them, and in consequence will affect the performance of their team. In this book, you will learn how to listen to other people and develop a team who are confident working within their capabilities, have complete honesty and trust in their fellow members and who will then have the confidence to take responsibility for their actions as part of that team.
Near the end, the author offers you the chance to take an honest look at yourself and what you have, or wish to achieve, using himself as an example. He then goes on to offer you a very real business opportunity.
Having been employed, and self employed for many years, I found this book very interesting and whether you have years of team building ahead of you, or are just starting out, I would definitely recommend it.
