Toby’s Tails – A Kitten’s Tale by Susan Keefe

This is the true story of a little abandoned kitten who was adopted by a Border Collie called Toby…

The unconditional love we experience with our pets is a wonderful thing, however, when Toby the Border collie noticed that the cats who were already resident at Fantasy Farm ignored a tiny kitten who arrived there, he decided that he would befriend it. As the friendship developed the author realised that she had to capture this wonderful relationship in pictures and eventually in this lovely children’s book.

Scared and lonely the kitten gradually became more confident, and with Toby’s guidance he learnt about many of the different animals and wildlife around him.

There are lots of sweet little incidents in this enchanting book, for example, one time the kitten brings a mole into the house to find out from Toby what it is, and then wonders why the author wasn’t impressed. When he discovers that humans don’t like wildlife in the house, he typically cat like puts his head in the air and stalks out, as you do when you are only months old.

Life lessons for him abound as the seasons past, and children reading it will not only learn about the special bond which develops between the kitten and Toby but also that acceptance and love can be found in unusual places.

A true story, and one which will be loved by any child who loves animals.

Bogart Listens (Bogart Series Book 2) by Diane Rose Duffy

51oHlWt-WbL__AA160_

Who cannot love the amazing Bogart? The most adorable family pet, always trying to help his family, join in the fun, and make people happy.

The only problem is that Bogart is a Golden Retriever dog, and his schemes to cheer up his people can sometimes go horribly wrong, like the time when he thought Grandpa Mike would like some of Ginger’s toys to cheer him up…

In this the second Bogart book, Bogart and his family have to adjust to the arrival of their extended family when ‘Little Mike’ has to go abroad with the army and his heavily pregnant wife and their little girl Ashley come to stay.

It is an adjustment everyone has to make and Bogart in his own way tries to make it right for all, listening to their worries and selflessly offering kisses and tummy rubs for free at times of stress.

The listening Bogart however uncovers many insecurities suffered by young and old alike and also highlights the worries of those who serve, or are the relatives of those serving in the armed forces.

Blame Bogart, the first book in the series had become such a favourite story for my grandchildren, that when I realised Bogart Listens had been released I downloaded it straight away on my Kindle Unlimited subscription. The children and I loved the story, and I must admit it made my husband chuckle too when I continually read excerpt out to him.

About the Author: Diane Rose Duffy is a California native who has a passion for books, a whopping coffee addiction and a perpetual craving for chocolate. After recently retiring from a lengthy accounting career in Silicon Valley, Diane presently enjoys the peaceful serenity of daily life in the Sierra Nevada foothills of Northern California. Diane Rose Duffy has completed two humorous romance novels and a funny children’s chapter book with the support of her husband whom she proclaims to be her ‘happily ever after’.

About the Book: Imagine being a dog and living in a family with a mom, dad, three little girls, a grandpa, a bird and a cat.

That’s my life!

Hi, I’m Bogart and I am a Golden Retriever. My family calls me their dog but I prefer to think of myself as a member of the Clark family.

Last year, we adopted Ginger, a very pampered and spoiled cat from the same big place I came from. My family says it’s an animal shelter. At first, Ginger and I had some major issues. However, we’ve finally reached a truce – sort of – to get along and let sleeping dogs lie, so to speak. Just a little doggie humor, folks.

Just when I think it’s safe to kick back and enjoy life, I discover our little clan will soon be growing again – with more people! Oh dear! Our house is getting pretty crowded. More importantly, I wonder who will steal all the attention away from me this time?

If only I could do more than just listen. How I long to speak in a human voice so I could talk to my beloved family and let them know how much they are loved.

Help! I’m a Kitty Mom: How to Raise an Orphaned Kitten (The Mewtopia Diaries Book 1) by Linda Deane

51Tx9UtAJUL__AA160_

Last year we rescued three kittens. Ours were large enough to fend for themselves, however, when I saw this book I knew I had to get it, just in case…

This book is amazing. I have never had occasion to bring up new born kittens, but if I ever do I shall be so pleased that I downloaded this book as it contains a wealth of information.

The author has vast experience of raising kittens from a very young age, and the whole book is a full of important information on the subject. What’s more the author is happy to offer advice and help if needed.

From the start, she looks into the options available if you find, or are bought a litter in a honest way, discusses the realities of the situation, the time and attention which is involved, and of course the tremendous rewards which can be gained.

A must have book for anyone who cares for animals, full of practical advice.

About the Author: Linda Deane is an avid cat fan. She currently shares her home with eighteen cats, two dogs, a corn snake, her husband and two teen daughters. She is an active member of the online animal rescue and rehome community, taking in abandoned cats and kittens as a foster “parent” until good homes can be found for them.
Linda lives in South Africa. She has a degree in Zoology and Botany and has always loved animals and nature. Her close relationship with cats has taught her much about their ways and her love for them has inspired her writing. She is never short of a “mewse” or two, or three, or four……

About the Book: The tiny scrap of life in the palm of your hand raises its head unsteadily. Delicate whiskers twitch as it sniffs the air and appeals to you with a weak cry. Instinctively it knows the tables have turned. This kitten is one of the lucky ones. Fate has chosen you and placed it in your compassionate, capable hands. What do you do now? This booklet is a comprehensive, practical guide on how to raise an orphaned kitten. Drawn from their years of experience as volunteers fostering and raising orphaned, abused and abandoned cats and kittens, Linda Deane and family share their knowledge in this series of indispensible guides. They call their home Mewtopia, a haven for needy cats and kittens. Look out for the next volume in The Mewtopia Diaries – Goodbye Gabby, An Understanding of FIP – available in October 2015.

Annie and Me, A Shared Journey Home by Rich Okun

515suuwUD4L__AA160_Firstly I must say that this is an absolutely beautiful book, although it covers a very sad subject, the passing of the authors much loved cat Annie with Cancer, the sadness is somehow transformed, beautifully and sensitively into a celebration of the life of a very special cat, and the bond they shared.

After Annie was diagnosed, the time they spent together created an extraordinary healing time somehow, and Rich recounts this through his poetry.

Running through the book is a strong vein of happy memories, and magical moments which have been captured forever. The day he first set eyes on her, her favourite things, her little foibles, and mannerisms, all the special things which they shared and these will live eternally in this heart, as well as this wonderful book.

I, like many others have lost beloved pets and these poems touched my heart deeply, the tears were flowing freely as I read it. Beautifully written, the tears were for the memories his words brought back, of animals I had watched go over the rainbow bridge, and miss so much.

It is evident that the author’s heart and soul is poured into this collection of poems, however, Rich Okun’s talent do not stop at his writing, as he also illustrated the book. Through his words and art work, he has captured the very essence and soul of Annie throughout her life, from a tiny kitten through to the end…

A beautiful book which I will treasure forever.

About the Author: Rich spent his life in various corporate positions and after many years and different careers; he now devotes his focus to creative passions. Having spent a lifetime studying many different ancient spiritual belief systems he was inspired to action when a new puppy, Maya, came to town. Rich lives in Connecticut with his wife, Maya, and four cats. http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/7080036.Rich_Okun
short Author’s interview http://littleconversationstoday.com/rich-okun-expert/

Rich defines himself by his spiritual interests and values. He has been artistically inclined all his life, and at 6 years old, was one of the youngest members of the Art Student’s league of New York (across from Carnegie Hall). However, he always used his art only for spiritual pursuits. Rich carved stone, painted, wrote poems and stories and many other creative passions – all for the give away, His life changed that hot summer’s day while walking Maya, when he heard the answer to the questions he had always asked.

a little story:
My daughter had asked me to perform her up-coming wedding ceremony that was to take place in September of 2011. I was fortunate to be able to become a Justice of the Peace to do this – Then, in July of 2011, while walking Maya, and while thinking intently about the content of my upcoming wedding speech …

“I am and have been like Tevye (the father in Fiddler on the roof) always talking to God/Spirit – sharing a joke, a prayer, and having a conversation especially while in nature, everyday of my life, and like so many other people, I ask spirit ‘what am I here for? What should I be doing with my life, how can I help?” – I always wanted to hear a great big booming voice come down from above maybe James Earl Jones saying – “Just do this Rich” but I never heard any thing back. This did not deter me from continuing to ask. That day I heard a whisper – it was telling me to further develop this format (quote/poem-story/illustration/) but to use Maya as my muse and do it for children to be able to learn about spiritual matters much earlier in life and to closen the relationships between family members. Make it so parents can use it to discuss these matters with their children – help to awaken children sooner in their lives – I was taken aback as I also had a chill (on a very hot summers day) which usually indicates some connection with spirit.” says Rich.

a year later, after closing the online bead store, I decided to listen…The result is this book, The Sun, the Moon, the Stars and Maya a unique format that wants to help – there will be many more books to come. Rich has also authored and illustrated several more traditional children’s’ stories using Maya as the main character – all with an eye towards making the spiritual more accessible.

“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.” – Anais Nin
Maya says in reply:
I like it here,
it’s so nice and warm
I feel I could disappear,
turning it into an art form

It’s only when,
we feel the pull
overcome, the now and then,
and stop the bull

The single most important guiding principle that he has and tries to live is the Golden Rule. Rich has a strong desire to make a difference and believes he can help people to feel and deal better during these challenging times of stress and anguish.

His path to get to this book is a 61-year journey of taking every circuitous route. There are so many wonderful things that have influenced his life in such mystical ways and after having experienced so much magic, he felt compelled to help.

About the Book: This is a book about love and healing – it is not morbid although the subject matter can be challenging.

During the writing of this book, my only intent was to be single minded and focused on caring for my dying cat, and observing what was happening – All my life I had been angry and afraid – I didn’t know it but this had stemmed from my issues with death and dying and my issues surrounded my mother dying when I was young. While writing this book, my fears and angers dropped as Annie helped me to form a new relationship with death and dying and life. I hope that this book can help you too as many of us have difficulties with this subject. Whether it is a beloved pet, or human, the experience is the same. In words and pictures, let this story find the hole in your heart, and fill it.

Adventures of Sammy the Dalmatian and Friends by D.C. Rush

51IgsSff3TL__AA160_A wonderful story for children.

This is an enchanting story about three dogs who live in Sun City a retirement community. Sammy is a Dalmatian, who is a Fire Department retired Lead Fire Dog, Mason is a great big Rottweiler who’s really a big softie, and then there’s Jewel a beautiful Golden Retriever who when she’s not playing dutifully protects her family’s house.

The dogs are great friends and meet up regularly, so when Mason doesn’t arrive one day, the others go round to his house to see where he is.

But he’s not there! Eventually, he arrives, panting and very tired. He tells his friends he has been through a terrible ordeal, he has been dognapped, but he managed to escape. After Mason reveals that in the big barn he was taken to there were other dogs in cages, Sammy and Jewel leave him to recover and set out see if they can discover where he was held.

When they find the place they report back to Mason and together the three friends hatch a clever plan. However, for it to succeed they need some help from Sammy’s son, Siren, the new Lead Fire Dog, and one of Sammy’s oldest and dearest friend a calico cat called Peaches.

Will their plan succeed?

Will the terrible dognappers be caught?

To discover the plan and find out what happens, you will have to read the book.

Many children love animals and for me an added bonus to the books by this author is the way the characters of the animals and birds involved shine through. The distinctive personalities of the different dog breeds are so good in this book, as are the bird types in the Robby’s Quest series, and the cats in Hershey Learns a Lesson.

Yet again D. C. Rush has written a wonderful, gentle story for children which teaches them the difference between right and wrong in an easily understood way, and it is beautifully illustrated by the very talented Daniela Frongia.

About the Authors: We actually began writing our first children’s book about 2 years ago. Cathy and I would often sit outside watching the birds. We fed the birds daily. They were very clever and fun to watch, especially when the little birds kicked seed to the ground for the larger birds. It seemed the birds had some group structure and displayed very effective teamwork. We thought it would be interesting to write a book about birds flying south for the winter.

The finished book sat on our computer hard drive for over a year before my brother and sister-in-law convinced us to self-publishing. I never thought we would actually publish our work. However, the birth of our grandson Rylie gave us some added incentive to get the book out there, and we decided to dedicate the book to him. We thought it would be nice to leave something behind for our children and their children. So we had the book proofed, edited, illustrated then self-published it ourselves at Amazon.com.

Cathy and Don currently live in Arizona with their cats, Nomi and Hershey. Cathy is a homemaker and Don is a retired Manufacturing Manager and former Elementary School Governing Board Member.

About the Book: Sammy the Dalmatian is a retired, highly decorated Fire Dog. Sammy and his two best friends; Jewel a Golden Retriever and Mason a Rottweiler, live close together in Sun City, a retirement community in beautiful Arizona. Every day, like clockwork, the three dogs get together to have some fun and reminisce about the old times.

When Mason fails to show up one day, Sammy and Jewel go on an adventure that will take them on a hunt for two very bad men living near their community. It will take a great deal of courage to bring down these Dognappers, but all three dogs, along with their loyal friends and family, are willing to risk everything.

Hershey Learns a Lesson by D. C. Rush

In this exciting new release by D. C. Rush the bully learns a lesson.

About the book: Hershey, the notorious cat from the Robby’s Quest storybook series, is still mean-spirited and a bully. Hershey is big, strong and very fast, yet uses all his skills for the wrong reasons; to prey upon the smaller and weaker animals around his yard.

Nomi, the other cat living in the same house, is older and much smaller. Nomi has many friends around the neighborhood. One day, when Nomi’s new friend Tyson comes over for a visit, Hershey decides to attack the smaller cats, however things do not work out as he planned, and Hershey finds himself in a situation that may change him forever.

Enjoy Hershey Learns a Lesson, a story about helping each other to develop new and lasting friendships.

Hershey is a big, handsome cat, but unfortunately, his beauty is only skin-deep. Inside he is a bully, he loves nothing more than to frighten other animals, and this includes Nomi, an older but very pretty tan coloured cat who lives in the same house.

If you are fans of the Robby’s Quest series of children’s books, you will already have met Hershey, as the villain, a couple of times before, when he terrorises the birds. In this books he’s still up to no good, he even steals poor Nomi’s food, but what can she do, after all, he’s much bigger than her.

It seems as if there is no way to stop Hershey’s reign of terror. However, one-day, Nomi’s friend Tyson comes to play with her. Horrible Hershey spies them, and when he creeps up and scares Tyson, the events which follow, turn the tables on Hershey and change his life forever.

Suddenly, Hershey is scared and needs help. For the first time, he’s no longer in a position to be bully. However, luckily there are nice kind cats, and when Nomi and Tyson discover his problem, they help him and teach him a valuable lesson at the same time.

The author has combined a wonderful story with a clear message, a great book which is beautifully illustrated by Daniela Fongia.

Kitten Diaries by Conny Manero

Kitten_DiariesKitten Diaries: Kitten Diaries contains two stories about two different kittens in two vastly different situations.

The first, ‘Chanel’s Story,’ is about an ugly shelter kitten who gives herself no chance at being adopted. After many disappointments, she discovers that there are people willing to look beyond fur deep. Chanel’s poignant and amusing story shines a well deserved spotlight on animal shelter adoptions and the importance of responsible pet ownership.
Beyond the timely message of overflowing shelters, ‘Chanel’s Story’ is, at the heart of it, about the blessing of acceptance. Not just a human’s acceptance and love for a cat; but also a cat’s special love for the owner who saved her.
In ‘Queeny’s Diary,’ this tiny, Ragdoll breed kitten is left in the care of friends while her owners go away on vacation. Her diary entries describe numerous adventures and misadventures when she finds herself alone in a household full of other older and eccentric cats.

Review by Susan Keefe:

Have you ever wondered what your cat or kitten is thinking?

Well, this lovely book is written as the diaries of two kittens.

Chanel is a poor, ugly abandoned kitten, who just wants to be loved, but is always overlooked by visitors to the shelter. Then on Pet Adoption Week, she is taken to a pet shop. As the other cats are re-homed, she sits, waiting for that special person to come along and love her. Find out if her dream comes true and what happens by reading her diary.

The second kitten is called Queeny, she’s a beautiful pampered Ragdoll.  Her owners leave her with their friends whilst they go on holiday, but she has to learn how to interact with the other six cats at the house! Find out how Queeny gets on, and discover how she feels when her owners return, in this second delightful diary.
A beautiful book, thoughtfully written, which encourages children to think about what their pets may be thinking, and, how they might react to everyday situations.

About Conny Manero:

Writing has been a passion and an important outlet in my life. Born in Belgium, I lived in South Africa for fifteen years before moving to Toronto, Canada, where I now live. As they say, “life is a journey,” and I try to use all of my varied experiences and exposure to diverse cultures to enrich my writing.

Another passion in my life is a deep love of animals. Cats are especially close to my heart, and I use my writing to bring awareness to their issues. Most importantly, I try to focus on the critical need to educate more people about the importance of neutering their pets, and encouraging support of local animal rescue organizations.

Earlier this year I released a book entitled, “Kitten Diaries.” Both stories in “Kitten Diaries” are based on real cats and, although their humorous adventures are fanciful, both are based on a real life event. First there is “Chanel’s Story” about the time when I adopted my wonderful cat, Chanel, at an animal shelter. This story is followed by “Queeny’s Diary” and is about a kitten sent to spend time with family friends while her owners go on vacation. Fur flies when Queeny finds herself at the mercy of a household full of older cats.

I also have opinions and points of view that I like to share here on Helium. Networking with other writers, sharing ideas and stories has been an especially enriching experience.

Debbie by Conny Manero

Picture

Debbie is a ferret, who is adopted by Andrew from the pet shop. Arriving at his 15th floor apartment, she soon discovers that Andrew has provided her with a lovely cage, plenty of attention and a friend to play with in the form of a cat called Charles.

Through Debbie, in this captivating story we learn a lot about ferrets and gain wonderful insights into this not very well known pet. Anyone who owns and loves animals knows they are very intelligent and do communicate, both with each other and interspecies, this enchanting, cleverly written book illustrates this wonderfully.  As I read it, I found myself reading out parts to my husband, laughing at the antics of these very intelligent animals. Given the freedom of the apartment whilst Andrew is at work, Debbie is soon learning new and interesting things from Charlie, including the rules of being an animal in a human’s world.

Whether you are a ferret fan or not, old or young, this book is a very enjoyable read, amusing and brilliantly written with lovely illustrations by Nancy Matson.
