Halloween Howler (Super Speed Sam Book 10) by Monty J. McClaine

An exciting Halloween night for the McClaine family and their superhero basset hound Sam.

My little granddaughter and I just love the Super Speed Sam stories which feature Sam the superhero basset hound and his family, dad, Marty ( I mean Monty) McClaine, his wife, their young son Jack whose always getting into trouble, and little Molly, Jack’s younger sister.

This special Halloween Howler story brings all the excitement of Halloween, and the theatrical abilities of Super Speed Sam together in a story which will captivate every child who reads it, just like it captivated my granddaughter when she visited the other day.

The stage is set straight from the start for an exciting Halloween night in the McClaine household, all the family are cleverly dressed in suitably scary costumes, and their English neighbour, after telling them about the tradition of Guy Fawkes in the UK have promised some amazing fireworks.

Everyone is looking forward to a fun evening, however Sam is a little sad at being kept indoors. The family know that fireworks will scare him and it is for his own good, however he decides to watch the proceedings from Jack’s bedroom window, and it is a good job he does…

Times have been hard for the wolf pack which live in the local woodlands, and hunger has forced them into the outskirts of the town. Keeping to the shadows the wolf pack nervously creep about searching for something to eat. Of course, they don’t know its Halloween night, and they can’t know the difference between the sound of fireworks going off, and sound of the guns which cruelly hunt and kill them.

When they unwittingly arrive in the McClaine garden, scared and very defensive, Sam is instantly alerted to his family’s danger, but what can he do, and will his super powers be enough to overcome these wild animals and save his family?

Excitement and fun is the name of the game in this wonderful children’s book which celebrates this special ‘scary’ night of the year.

About the Author:

Proud winner of the 7th Annual Beverly Hills Book Awards (2018) in the “Environment” category for The Rescue Elves – The Plastic Pollution Adventure.

Proud winner of the 5th Annual Beverly Hills Book Awards in the “Holiday” category for Super Speed Sam – Santa’s Rescue Dog.

I feel that some of the natural interactions between family and friends are gradually eroding, if not already completely worn away for some. And I was reminded of a C.S.Lewis quotation –

“A children’s story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children’s story in the slightest.”

It also feels like the simple joy of laughing or crying among family and friends is being replaced by beeps, bops and demands to ‘add new features’ or ‘why doesn’t this work?’ or ‘who’s hogging the Wi-Fi?’.

So I set out to create a fun and exciting series of children’s short stories, with lots of adventure and splashes of humor, all paced to hold children’s attention whether reading or listening… at least that’s my hope!

Stories that will delight both boys and girls, the young and old, and, of course, moms and dads! Tales that allow a return to simpler values, kid-like imagination for both children and adults and, I sincerely hope, bring families closer together.

BBQ Blunder (Super Speed Sam) (Book 8) by Monty J. McClaine

Super Speed Sam saves the day.

Everyone loves a barbecue, and what’s more fun than a barbecue party? This is what the McClaine family thought, although the barbecue they were arranging was for a sad reason, they were saying goodbye to their good neighbours Pete and Sally Johnstone, and their five year old son Matthew, who were moving away.

After all the busy preparations, the day arrived, the barbecue was set up, and mum had made her special burgers. Dad Monty was of course in charge of the barbecue, and the guests were arriving bringing their contributions to the event.

What a lovely atmosphere, the adults were laughing and talking, and the children playing at the bottom of the garden and drinking soda, everything was perfect! The only one who was a bit sad was Sam their basset hound, his young master was busy playing with the other children, not him. So, as dogs do, he settled down in a shaded area for a nap.

However, we all know that dogs have a sixth sense, and sure enough, when harmless playing led to a dangerous situation Sam was awake in a flash. Jack was in danger, what could he do?

Now we’re great fans of Super Speed Sam in our family, but new readers are about to discover that this is no ordinary basset hound (If there is such a thing.) Sam is a superhero, with powers given to him one Christmas Eve night when he helped Santa Claus, but that story is in book 5 and is called Santa’s Rescue Dog.  In a flash, the clever canine susses out the situation, acts, and saves the day!

However, as can often be the case, things happen so quickly that Sam’s actions are misread and instead of hero, he becomes a villain who injured his young master. Luckily though, their neighbour Pete had seen what really happened, and he puts the record straight, earning the canine hero a magnificent treat!

My granddaughter just loved this book, yet another wonderful story in the Super Sam Series which never fail to amuse her, and yet subtly impart important life lessons. Highly recommended.

If I Were Human by Wes Tyler

An enchanting NEW RELEASE for animal loving children.

As soon as I saw this book it instantly appealed to me, not just because I am a dog lover, but because being a mum and nanny I just knew that it would appeal to our little grandchildren.

Sure enough, on the cover, the two extremely cute main characters; black (Brina) and white (Winnie) instantly caught my three year old granddaughter’s eye.

Anyone who spends time with dogs will instantly be able to relate to the way that Brina watches over her little mistress Genevieve as she is playing a game. You can practically see your dog’s brain computing everything which goes on around him or her, and sure enough it’s not long before Brina’s thoughts turn to what she would do if she were a human. This book is beautifully illustrated and captivated our little one, every page turn brought a different scenario, as we discovered what this little Scottie dog would do with her day.

Of course, it’s not long before Winnie is asked the same question, and being a boy dog his day is totally different. Add into the equation a squirrel with dreams of being a MasterChef, and the nosy dog next door’s visions of grandeur, and you have a story which will captivate every child who reads it, or has is it read to them.

This enchanting book will stand the test of time, and hold a very special place on our bookshelf for years to come. Highly Recommended!

Toby’s Tails – A Kitten’s Tale by Susan Keefe

This is the true story of a little abandoned kitten who was adopted by a Border Collie called Toby…

The unconditional love we experience with our pets is a wonderful thing, however, when Toby the Border collie noticed that the cats who were already resident at Fantasy Farm ignored a tiny kitten who arrived there, he decided that he would befriend it. As the friendship developed the author realised that she had to capture this wonderful relationship in pictures and eventually in this lovely children’s book.

Scared and lonely the kitten gradually became more confident, and with Toby’s guidance he learnt about many of the different animals and wildlife around him.

There are lots of sweet little incidents in this enchanting book, for example, one time the kitten brings a mole into the house to find out from Toby what it is, and then wonders why the author wasn’t impressed. When he discovers that humans don’t like wildlife in the house, he typically cat like puts his head in the air and stalks out, as you do when you are only months old.

Life lessons for him abound as the seasons past, and children reading it will not only learn about the special bond which develops between the kitten and Toby but also that acceptance and love can be found in unusual places.

A true story, and one which will be loved by any child who loves animals.

Paw Before Bedtime The story of Twilight: the retirement home for dogs by Association Twilight with Liz Brown

As an animal lover, I have supported, sponsored and admired all my life the people who run animal sanctuaries, not only because of the wonderful rescues they do, giving animals who were unloved, ill-treated, abandoned or uncared for a new chance of life, but also I admire their ability to be strong enough to be able to do the difficult bits which inevitably come with the calling.

Reading this wonderful book, Paws before Bedtime, has taken my admiration to a whole new level! When you visit a sanctuary or rescue centre you don’t really know what happens behind the scenes, you may see before and after pictures, but they can’t portray the feelings of both the rescuers and the animals, like this book does.

Leeanne and Mike, animal lovers and soul mates, have in their part of France, made their home into a rescue centre for old dogs, not just local dogs, but their dogs sometimes travel great distances to spend their last hours, days, weeks, months or if they are fortunate years, with this amazing couple, and the volunteers who are an essential part of this haven.

I had heard of Twilight before reading this book, but living a great distance away had never visited them, now I have the overwhelming wish to do so. That so many dogs, with such a diverse range of illnesses and/or disabilities have found peace here is amazing enough, but that they ALL get to feel loved, genuinely cared for, and live as part of an enormous pack, is fantastic.

However, it is not just the dogs lives that Leeanne and Mike have enriched, they seem to have their own special magic which draws people to them and, and the dogs. It’s the ‘Twilight Effect’ so I have read, and it is absolutely lovely! To know that there are such special people in this world is heart lifting, people who care for the dogs, raise funds to make their lives better, pick up and transport them, and of course do all the essential little daily tasks which come with owning dogs.

This book is a wonderful celebration of Twilight and inside you will find incredible stories about dogs with all sorts of problems who thanks to the dedication and love of Leeanne, Mike, and an army of volunteers young and old, live their twilight years safe, warm and loved.

The stories of Leeanne, Mike and many of the helpers are also told, as they are integrally entwined together. This book is one every animal lover should own, it is humbling, inspiring, and just simply wonderful.

Twilight, in all its guises is a place which all animal lovers wish they were brave enough to have ourselves, but we haven’t, and I for one am full of admiration for this amazing couple and their helpers who have been brave enough to help these elderly, ill and sometimes very disabled dogs.

On a personal note, I have had dogs all my life my Border Collie Toby, is now 8 years old, and the years pass so quickly. Leeanne and Mike say in the book that they hope people will consider rescuing an old dog when the time comes for them to have another canine friend, and I will do so.

I loved so much of this book, even though at times I could barely read it through the tears, but this passage will stick in my mind forever, ‘That magical Twilight Effect has encouraged both the French and the English community to step up and take on the oldies, and instead of being afraid of death, to celebrate the life that the dogs have. Old dogs do not go to retirement homes to die. They go to live.’

So please buy this book, for yourself, your friends, for birthdays, Christmas, by doing so you will not only be supporting Twilight, you will also have the privilege of allow the wonderful characters in it, both canine and human to enter your soul and enrich your life.

What Dogs Really Talk About by Nick da Costa

A hilarious yet eye opening insight into our canine friends.

Do you ever wonder what your dog thinks, or what they talk about when they are together?

The author of this thoroughly entertaining book obviously loves dogs, and has given the subject much consideration, resulting in this hilarious, yet thought provoking book.

Every night six dogs meet under an old oak tree, and like humans, they discuss matters of great importance to them. But what do YOU think are important subjects to our canine friends and companions? Well, the answers are in this book, and not surprisingly, they are very similar to subjects we would discuss – although sometimes from a totally different perspective…

Of course, everyone wants to know where they come from, and dogs are the same, so evolution, how they became tame, or indeed who tamed who is debated, along with why different breeds of dogs evolved into their various shapes and have taken on diverse jobs.

Until you read enlightening book, very few humans can really appreciate how vital our canine friends are to us, and importantly they take their responsibilities. Through the writing of Nick da Costa we discover how they spend their lives looking after, and worrying about us, even if we don’t always see it that way.

A myriad of topics from social networking, to the Dog Star, walkies, playing, vets, Christmas, and of course the arch enemy c.a.t.s., make this book a fantastic addition to any dog lovers bookshelf.

About the Book: Every evening a group of Dogs meets under the old oak tree to discuss matters of importance.
Their GREAT ENTERPRISE to help The Owners is a regular subject.
Another, hardly surprising, is cats (please note the small ‘c’).
But topics as far-ranging as Advertising, Social Networking, Space Travel and Evolution all receive their unique canine insight.
Here, then, are the conversations of Whitman, Pippa, Anton, Butch, Malcolm and Obi.
It has been my privilege to write them down.

Lessons from Shadow: My Life Lessons for Boys and Girls by Shadow Bregman

What a wonderful book for children. Not only is it cleverly written by a worldly black Labrador called Shadow, of course kindly penned by his human daddy Walter Bregman, but it contains some important life lessons for children to learn, and other dogs of course as long as their mummies and daddies read it to them. Because you see, as I already know, but many people don’t, dogs to understand us, and talk to us too!

When Shadow’s mummy and daddy decided to take him home from the rescue centre Shadow had already learnt a lot of good, and bad things. Sensibly they took their other dog Betsy to say hello to shadow before they made a final decision, but they didn’t need to worry, they quickly became friends. Betsy did like to be the boss though, and could be a bit of a bully some times, but the story behind that is in one of the lessons.

Shadow’s lessons cover many subjects. In the first one, Shadow admits to being very greedy, (like most dogs) and tells of the mischief which can be caused if the pantry door isn’t closed, especially if dogs pinch the chocolate!

As we settle down to enjoy the tales Shadow tells, it is fun to look at life through his eyes, taking a dogs eye view of life and situations. For instance, escaping is fun, the bigger the fence the better, until you get to the other side, and discover you want to go home! Then things can be pretty scary!

Family life is varied and sometimes sad, and Shadow explains in his own sensitive, wise way, how he and his daddy coped with sad times in their lives, and the loneliness which affected them after.

Of course the world is sometimes confusing for a dog. In the chapter called lessons, we discover some of the things which we, as humans, don’t really understand about dog communication, and some of the things which puzzle them. Shadows summing up of this lesson is priceless, but you will have to read the book to find out what it is.

If you love dogs, whether you are young or old, you will find this book enchanting. For those of us who love our dogs, it is affirmation that they do understand us, and can teach us so much. The chapters in this book cover very important issues for children, and guide them sensitively in the right direction, to enable them to deal with various situations.

I loved this book! Shadow is a very wise dog and I hope he and his daddy write some more so I can enjoy learning more about their lives, and the important lessons they have to share.

About the Book and Author: Shadow Bregman, a twelve-year-old rescue dog, passes on to six- to ten-year-old boys and girls the life lessons she has learned. This book can be read by a child alone and is also ideal as a teaching book. Shadow will ask every child what lesson is learned before it is revealed. Because of its short chapters and charming illustrations, it is an ideal bedtime book.
This book has been kindly translated for Shadow by Walter Bregman his Daddy.

Tricycle and Friends: True-Life Adventures of a Three-Legged Golden Retriever and His Rescued Farm Animal Friends by Lester Aradi

T

This wonderful children’s books is about a three legged retriever called Tricycle who is adopted by a family, and goes to live at their farm.

Once there, he meets Buckaroo, the miniature donkey. The two quickly become friends, and Buckaroo introduces Tricycle to some of the other animals. Many are adopted too. He soon discovers that there are all sorts, not only other dogs, but horses, llamas, chickens, and honey bees.

They go to meet Cantara and Pink, the llamas, and discover fascinating things about these lovely animals. However, the icing on the cake is when they learn that there will be another new arrival at the farm the following day, a little baby alpaca! Everyone is excited! But what is an alpaca, and what will it be called?

The author teaches in a very gentle way, through the experiences of Tricycle and his friends, how being different is okay. And, as the book progresses we learn about bullying, the importance of adopting animals, and many other things.

I loved the way the reader gets to meet lots of the animals through delightful illustrations and lovely pictures. I thing they are so important in children’s books, and bring the farm wonderfully to life, adding so much to this enchanting tale.

I can’t wait to read more adventures from Tricycles and his friends.

About the Book:

When Tricycle, a rescued, three-legged Golden Retriever arrives at his new home, he gets the attention of the other animals who live there. They want to know what happened to his fourth leg, and they wonder if it hurts and if it slows him down.

As Tricycle gets to know the other residents of the farm, he learns there are a lot of different creatures who have a wide range of abilities and interests. He enjoys meeting the other animals and loves the peaceful quality of his surroundings.

Based on a true story, Tricycle and Friends shares a story about a group of rescued animal friends and their real-life journey of serving as therapy animals for children with special needs. Through story and pictures, it addresses topics such as adoption, bullying, dealing with physical challenges, death of a companion, and friendship.

FOUR FEET MOVE YOUR SOUL. By Kristi Domke

41RH7BpGwOL._AC_US160_

The author had a deep love for her Miniature Schnauzer ‘Super Stew’ and this is so evident in her first book ‘The Adventures of Super Stew: An unforgettable journey,’ in which she helps those of us who have lost a pet by offering solace.

I was so pleased when I had the opportunity to read this, her second book, in which she examines the four stages of grief – Shock & Denial, Anger & Depression, Release & Honor, Return to Love.

This book contains some lovely messages and poems written straight from the heart. The stages of grief are beautifully examined and the whole book, although on a sad subject, is a joy to read.

Thoughtfully written and beautifully illustrated, this book offers great comfort and a positive way to go forward with your life after such a deep loss.

About the Book: The creator of “The Adventures of Super Stew: An unforgettable journey” brings to you “Four Feet Move Your Soul”, a series of poems and messages written about pet loss and grieving to help you move forward in your journey.
