Your Body’s Environmental Chemical Burden: A Resource Guide to Understanding and Avoiding Toxins by Cindy Klement

The title of this book caught my attention as a health conscious, environmental aware mother and grandmother.

Reading the preface I discovered that its content, and publishing was as a result of the author attending a lecture in the fall of 2013, where the presenter used the term ‘body burden.’ This choice of phrase piqued her interest and being a professor, with good access to the university online library she discovered that the body’s environmental chemical burden was something she needed to know more about.

Considering herself a ‘healthy and health conscious eater having been virtually organic since the late 1970’s, in March 2014 she asked her friend and personal physician Dr. Lev (Ed) Linker to run a toxicant profile on her. The results of these tests both surprised and horrified her. Determined to discover more she read countless studies and her findings made her increasingly concerned for the health of future generations, as a result of worldwide environmental chemical contamination.

As I read on, I discovered at the turn of every page interesting and quite frankly extremely worrying facts about the chemical contaminants found in our food, products, and environment. This chemical exposure is present quite simply every moment of our being, dare I say it, even before we are born. What’s more, despite all the ‘agencies’ and ‘labelling’ in place to ‘protect’ us, many of these chemicals simply don’t have to be declared.

This book is very well structured. The information within is easily assimilated by non-academic readers,  and it is presented in such a way that they are not only given thorough information about the chemical contaminants the author features in the book, but also much more, by highlighting pertinent subjects under subheadings such as human exposure, dietary exposure, and occupational exposure. Throughout, warnings are given on occupations and where exposure to contaminants can be excessive. Throughout the book there is advice on how we can empower ourselves, and the author suggests other resources if the reader wishes to pursue a particular subject in more detail. At the back of the book there is a comprehensive Appendix and Glossary.

I found this book extremely interesting and one which I strongly feel should be read by all. Our environment, how we live and what we put in our bodies is in our control. In this modern world well researched and factual reference books like this should be read, and available on the bookshelf of every home.

About the Author:

Since the late 1970s, Cindy has shared her expertise with thousands of people working as a nutritionist, health educator and herbalist. Cindy is a board-certified nutritionist and a certified Master Health Educator by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing. She is also an Adjunct Professor at Eastern Michigan University teaching the graduate-level course, Functional and Integrative Medicine. A long-time health program writer and presenter, Cindy is a sought-after speaker and author.

About the Book:

We live in a Tox-Sick World.
The chemicals you are being exposed to on a daily basis are slowly shortening your life span and wreaking havoc on your body. They are literally everywhere – furniture, cleaning supplies, make-up, Teflon pans, plastic bottles, storage containers, fuel exhaust, solvents, paints, detergents, photocopiers, fax machines, laser printers, computers, fragrances, dryer sheets, cigarettes, adhesives, moth balls, nail polish, hair dyes, marking pens, art supplies, charcoal fluid, microwaves, disposable cups and plates, Styrofoam, vehicle exhaust, magazines, toothpaste, food, candles, incense, building and renovation materials,  and so much more.

The pervasive effects of environment chemicals and the consequences on your health are serious.

This book gives you the tools, resources and education you need to eliminate toxins from your body and teaches you how to minimize your exposure to these chemicals and toxins.

Scientists found an average of 287 chemicals in the umbilical cord blood of newborns including pesticides, flame retardants, consumer product ingredients, and industrial pollutants. And that’s just the beginning. Exposure to contaminants continues thereafter on a daily basis creating a “body burden” or, simply put, an accumulated slurry of chemicals stored in our bodies.

The author, Cindy Klement, has a Master’s degree in Nutrition, is a credentialed Master Health Educator, an Adjunct Professor at a Michigan university, and has been in private practice in functional and integrative health since 1983.  In the six years it took to research chemical contaminants she accumulated over 1,500 studies on the topic of the body’s environmental chemical burden. The information was so powerful she decided it needed to be shared with the public, and has published this book.

In the U.S. alone, it is estimated that 13% of disease is attributed to the environment from cardiovascular disease, neuropsychiatric disorders, and cancer.  Exposure to environmental chemicals is rarely even mentioned in initiatives to combat chronic diseases.

Unfortunately, chemicals are here to stay and we have to learn to co-exist with them.  We can’t avoid every one of them, but we can use the tools and resources at our disposal to reduce our exposure.  We can also detoxify the body as best we can with what we know now.

Here’s some of what you’ll learn in this groundbreaking book:

  • The Most Common Chemical Contaminants In Our Environment, Where They Are Stored, What They Are Used For and How We Get Exposed.
  • The Effects Of Chemical Contaminants On Our Health.
  • Banned But Persistent Pesticides.
  • Chemicals Used In Plastics Manufacturing.
  • A Checklist On How To Empower Yourself with Action Steps To Avoid Chemical Contaminants And Toxic Exposure.
  • Why All Children Are Born With A Toxic Load and How To Minimize It.
  • High Risk Occupations For Chemical Exposure.
  • Personal Care Products You Should Avoid.
  • A Step-By-Step Arsenal Of Tips To Reinforce Your Protection Against Contaminants.
  • The Detoxification Process And Programs.
  • And So Much More
This book is “The go-to toxin reference for the 21st century – something every home should have!” – Dr. Deanna Minich, 4x best-selling author.

The Amazon Rainforest Adventure: Inform children about how important our Rainforest is (Picture book) (The Rescue Elves Book 2) by Monty J. McClaine

A wonderful story bringing the plight of the Amazon Rainforest and its inhabitants to the attention of children.

As a family we are very conscious of the world around us, the environment, recycling, and animal welfare. Awareness is so much easier to teach when children are young, and so when after reading The Plastic Pollution Adventure (Picture Book) (The Rescue Elves Book 1) I discovered that there was a second book in the series The Amazon Rainforest Adventure I just had to get it to read to my little granddaughter. This was not just because it has magical elves in it, but also because the deforestation of the Amazon rainforests has such an incredible impact on our planet and its ecosystems.

For those who don’t know, The Rescue Elves, or relves, are the special elves who look after Santa’s sleigh. It is their job to ensure that if there are any problems with it, they know what to do, and if necessary can rescue Santa, and save the day. However to do this they must stay in tip top condition throughout the year, and be ready to deal with any situation in any place on the earth. Therefore Mrs. Claus sends them on special missions to test their skills, and ensure they can deal with any situation, and these missions are the topics for this series of children’s books.

Holly, Charlie, Jack and Sparkle, are the names of the elves, and they are so excited, they love exploring and visiting beautiful places. In this adventure Mrs Claus has sent them to the beautiful Amazon Rainforest.

Before they go, the elves already know how important the rainforest is to the health of our planet and all the creatures who live on it, and why it is called the “lungs of the earth.” They also know how wet it is, the clue, well it is a ‘Rainforest,’ and so they are suitably dressed. However, when they arrive they are dismayed not to hear the animal and bird sounds they are expecting, but screaming!

Who could be screaming, and why? Well, the reason is revealed when they come across a very unhappy Monkey King who has his foot trapped. When the relves discover what it is under, and how it happened, they set about helping the monkeys to free him. However, when they find out from the monkeys how much of the beautiful forest has been cut down by humans, and the damage it causes, they are very sad. At the back of the book there is a list of a variety of websites which can provide more information.

I thoroughly recommend this compelling story which is beautifully illustrated. It is a wonderful instrument to open up discussions with children about the importance of trees, why they are cut down, and what they are used for. The author very cleverly bringing environmental awareness gently to their attention at an age when they are very receptive to ideas and good habits are easily formed.

About the Author:

Proud winner of the 7th Annual Beverly Hills Book Awards (2018) in the “Environment” category for The Rescue Elves – The Plastic Pollution Adventure.

Proud winner of the 5th Annual Beverly Hills Book Awards in the “Holiday” category for Super Speed Sam – Santa’s Rescue Dog.

I feel that some of the natural interactions between family and friends are gradually eroding, if not already completely worn away for some. And I was reminded of a C.S.Lewis quotation –

“A children’s story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children’s story in the slightest.”

It also feels like the simple joy of laughing or crying among family and friends is being replaced by beeps, bops and demands to ‘add new features’ or ‘why doesn’t this work?’ or ‘who’s hogging the Wi-Fi?’.

So I set out to create a fun and exciting series of children’s short stories, with lots of adventure and splashes of humor, all paced to hold children’s attention whether reading or listening… at least that’s my hope!

Stories that will delight both boys and girls, the young and old, and, of course, moms and dads! Tales that allow a return to simpler values, kid-like imagination for both children and adults and, I sincerely hope, bring families closer together.

About the Book:

“Eoww!” Sparkle, Holly, Jack and Charlie heard the most horrible yell come from deep in the amazon rainforest. All four of the Relves, otherwise known as The Rescue Elves, stopped in their tracks and ran to see what made that gut-wrenching sound!

The next thing they knew, a swarm of angry looking monkeys raced towards them, chittering and chattering loudly. Terrified but ready to protect themselves, the Relves were shocked when one monkey slowed to say the Monkey King was caught underneath Santa’s sleigh, which the rescue elves used for, well, rescuing practice.

As always Sparke does her part as a fast-thinking, passionate leader, Jack as the lovable, slightly round and clumsy one, Holly as the calm, cool, arty one and Charlie as the up-and-coming son of Father Time and Mother Earth. Together the four elves usually work as a well-oiled machine, but will this time be different? Will they be able to save the injured Monkey King in time?

The Plastic pollution Adventure (The Rescue Elves 1) by Monty J. McClaine

Teaching children the dangers of plastic to our world, and what they can do to help!

This book must be the best way ever to get the message across to children about the dangers of plastic to wildlife, the amount of items of rubbish it accumulates, where it is dumped, and also how important recycling is.

I recently read Santa’s Rescue Dog, Super Speed Sam, Book 5, by the same author to my granddaughter and we enjoyed it so much that this story caught my eye. You see, it is in Santa’s Rescue Dog that we first meet the relves. These are special rescue elves tasked with rescuing Santa, should he have a catastrophe on Christmas Eve, and their names are Sparkle, Holly, Jack and Charlie. Of course, everyone knows to be good at rescue like Firemen you have to practice, and the relves do the same. Mrs. Claus sends them, on special missions around the world throughout the year, just to keep them on their toes.

Their mission this time is to go to the beautiful Pacific Ocean and explore it, and the creatures which live near and in it. After all, you never know, one day Santa’s sleigh could break down going over the sea and they would have to know what to do if it was stuck under the water, wouldn’t they?

Now the Pacific Ocean is so different from the North Pole that the relves didn’t know what to expect, but being relves they are well prepared for anything. However, they can’t believe their eyes when they arrive and see a mysterious grey island. As they draw nearer they realise that it is made from all things plastic.

“How strange, I wonder where all this came from,” they ask themselves as they climb over it. Then suddenly they hear cries for help, and find some very special baby creatures in real distress. Luckily for them, rescue is what the relves do.  The incident makes the relves wonder how such a terrible thing could be in the middle of a lovely ocean. However, all is explained when the babies’ mommies arrive they tell them what is happening to the environment and our beautiful planet.

Something must be done, the relves decide. So they demonstrate to the reader what can be done, what a difference recycling can make, and how everyone can play their part.

This beautifully illustrated story was listened to avidly by my two grandsons and was the perfect way to explain to them that the environment is everyone’s responsibility, the dangers caused to wildlife by rubbish, and how important it is to take care of our world.

I think this book should be read to all children wherever in the world they live, the message it contains is so important and it will empower them with the knowledge that ‘they’ can make a difference!
