I Wish I Were a Fairy Tale: A Story Illustrated With Cakes by Crystal Walters

A magical children’s book, beautifully illustrated with cakes.

This wonderful children’s book captivated my three year old granddaughter’s imagination straight away.

As soon as you see the front cover you just know that this book is going to be something different, but it isn’t until you start turning the pages and entering the magical world of fairy tales that you realise just how wonderful it is.

Enchantingly, it is written in rhyme and very uniquely illustrated. The author’s passion behind the book is evident, not only in its content, but also by the fact that the story is illustrated in cakes, icing and frosting! On the front cover and throughout every page, all the settings and figurines for the different parts of the story were hand made by her, and were real, delicious cakes.

Haven’t we all wished we were in a fairy tale, having adventures in a magical place, and that we could be a princess, meet a unicorn, fly in a hot air balloon,  or sail the seas with pirates?

Well in this story a little girl and her puppy travel into fairy tales. There they meets mythical creatures like mermaids and dragons, and visit classic immortal characters like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Then as the moon rises they travel with the Sandman into other children’s dreams, bringing them to life as well.

The fairy tales we hear as children stay with us throughout lives and deep down we never forget the magic of them, and the people who have read them to us. I really liked the size of the font, for children learning to read it is clear and encouraging, and also thought it is a wonderful introduction into the joy of poetry.

The authors loving childhood shines through in the writing and love she has put into creating incredible book. I am sure it will grace bookshelves, and be held by many little hands for years to come.

About the Book:

Flying on fairy wings, befriending a dragon, and being the captain of a pirate ship are just some of the adventures one little girl and her puppy discover as they climb into the pages of a fairy tale. Is the best part of their story swimming with mermaids? Enjoying a cup of tea with Snow White? Flying a hot air balloon? Or is it something even more magical? Each enchanting moment of this delightful tale is told on top of a cake. With every character, creature, and castle sculpted out of sugar and frosting, this is truly the sweetest fairy tale ever created!

FEARNE FAIRY AND THE LANDING LESSON by Sarah Hill

In this delightful children’s book we join Fearne Fairy as she is wakened by the dawn chorus in Whimsy Wood on a marvellous May morning.

Fearne is a lovely kind fairy, but she has a terrible voice, so when she asks to join in the chorus the woodland birds don’t want to hurt her feelings, after all why make someone unhappy if it isn’t necessary? Instead, they divert her thoughts by asking how her best friend Mustard the Magpie Moth Caterpillar is.

Racing down stairs she finds Mustard happily sleeping soundly in his little leaf basket by the stove. Fearne loves her friend so much that she decides to make him a special breakfast, and sets off for the Woodland Store. However, although like other fairies Fearne can fly, her landings are not so good, and on her return she crashes. Startled awake, Mustard suggests that she needs to get some help perfecting her landings, and she agrees.

Thus begins a magical adventure, as we join Fearne and Mustard in their search for Bristle Bumblebee and Dewberry Dragonfly, flying experts who Mustard thinks will be able to help her.

After breakfast, with picnic packed, they set off on their quest to find Bristle and Dewberry.

The woods are wonderful, and most of the creatures are having fun, and enjoying the lovely May weather, but then they come across Bromley the Badger, and his friend, who is a very sad Hedgehog called Humbug.

However, when Fearne discovers the cause of Humbugs unhappiness she realises that it is within her powers to make him happy again, and so she waves her magic wand, and says a special spell, making things right.

Pleased to see his friend happy again, Bromley tells them that Bristle and Dewberry have opened a Flying School down by the purple orchid patch, to help the May bugs and stag beetles who are having problems learning to fly. So off Fearne and Mustard go in search of Bristle and Dewberry’s Flying School.

But will they find it?

And, if they do, will Bristle and Dewberry be able to help Fearne improve her landing, after all, she isn’t a May bug or stag beetle?

Well you will have to read the story to find out the answers to these questions, but the only thing I can say is that practice really does make perfect…

The wonderful way this magical children’s story is told, and the way its beautiful illustrations compliment the story makes this not just a book, but a prized possession, the type of book which will be handed down from child to child, through generation.

I would liken it to the famous The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame, and think it definitely deserves a place on every child’s bookshelf.

The Gift – The Chronicles of Tucker Littlefield by Tegon Maus

What a brilliant story!

About The Gift:
Transformed by a primitive magic beyond a civilized man’s understanding, I was given a horrible gift that no man should possess… It held me, twisted me, turning me at its bidding. I was enslaved by its power, compelled to devour the souls of the dead until I became the monster of my fears. I have seen things I wish never to see again. I have done things of which I wish never to speak. Yet I must if I am to find the answers to fulfill my hope. I have walked upon blue ribbons of molten stone to peer into the depth of a man’s soul. I watched as a promise made at birth brought my friend Enon to sacrifice everything to become whole again – all in an effort to save the life of his child. I have cried without shame for the loss of all I hold dear and for fear that the future will hold more than I can bear. I am Tucker Littlefield. Know all that I say now is true-spoken.
About Tegon Maus: Dearheart, my wife of forty three years and I live in Cherry Valley, a little town of 8,200 in Southern California. In that time, I’ve built a successful remodeling /contracting business. But that’s just my day job… everyone that writes, everyone who tells you how to write, all say the same thing… Write about what you know and what I know is me.
Well, at least the me I see when I write… a protagonist frequently wedged between a rock and a hard place but manages to work things out at the last minute after all.
Like most of us when pushed into a corner it only brings out the best in us and we become the unstoppable force of a reluctant hero. If I have a signature style for creating a character then this is it.

Review by Susan Keefe:

When Tucker Littlefield enters the tavern, its story time and his audience have come from near and far. The room falls silent as he begins the tale of how he first met Enon Tutelo, and the adventure, which followed.

They say, that sometimes an incident can change a person’s path in life forever, and Tucker’s attendance at a very special birthday party; and the events which followed, changed him forever. For Tucker is given a life changing gift, then a mission which takes him on a journey to other lands, far, far away from the Kingdom of Irkland,  where he meets strange people, and unimaginable creatures.

Magical, is the first word, which came to my mind when I finished this story.  Right from the very first page, I found myself totally captivated by Tucker’s storytelling of this is a wonderful adventure.

Tucker Littlefield is an amazing character, when reading it I immediately thought of John Carpenter’s fisherman storyteller at the beginning of ‘The Fog’ film, where the children gather round as the scene is set…  as, when reading it, I felt as if I too was actually there, sitting in the tavern, listening.

I cannot praise this book enough; it truly deserves to become a classic, the stuff of legends. As far as I am concerned, it has a fantastic storyline, the author has created some wonderful characters and I believe it would make a brilliant film!

I hope we shall be seeing more Chronicles of Tucker Littlefield in the future.
