THE STARLIGHT CLUB 10:: LOVE, ROMANCE, AND MURDER IN ANAHEIM by Joe Corso

NEW RELEASE

Money laundering and deception in Brooklyn, New York.

Bobby has driven up from Florida to spend Christmas with his daughter Lynn, her husband Ted, and their three children in Connecticut. These are special times as the years go by for Lynn and Bobby to spend time together, and for Lyn to hear tales of the glory days of the famous Starlight Club in Brooklyn, New York.

This story begins in 1962 with an unpleasant patron causing Ernie the bartender to take physical action against him. However, it appears that there is more to this incident that at first meets the eye, and when Red hears who is behind the problems and that the reason behind it is money laundering, he realises that it is time to take the matter in hand. Surrounded by loyal men who do what they must do in this underground world, Red realises that it is also important to keep the police and judicial system happy with pay-outs to smooth over any problems, even if is becoming increasingly expensive.

Meanwhile Joey is asked to once again look after movie mogul daughter June Morganstein in Los Angeles, something he is happy to do as he is madly in love with her. After an attempt on her life, Joey gets to the bottom of the mystery of why she needs protection and discovers that she has a gambling addiction which has got out of control. However, calling for assistance from other members of Red’s workforce unveils dirty deeds at the gambling club she frequents, and the owner’s alliances with villains and a Mexican drug cartels.  Seizing the opportunity to nip trouble in the bud Red and his men take matters into their own control, with the unofficial backing of the new Captain of the 10th Precinct Captain Lou Garner.

Reading the Starlight Club series is a real delight, within the pages of each of the books you are transported back in time to Brooklyn, and into a world where crime bosses rule the streets and yet are respected, even by the law. Through Red, Trenchie, Joey and all the characters who have been so important to the structure of the stories the everyday lives, loves, dangers and even celebrities of the time come alive. The comradeship these brothers in arms share, dangerous and often deadly activities, and underhand dealings are revealed. However, running through every story are strong veins of loyalty and respect which span generations.

Whether you are looking to read a really good story, love crime and gangster novels, or enjoy this period of history, I can guarantee you will not want to put down this exciting story, and it will leave you wanting more.

THE STARLIGHT CLUB 9: UNA MORTE FACILE (AN EASY DEATH) by Joe Corso

When Sicily arrives on the streets of Queens…

What daughter doesn’t love listening to her father’s stories, and this exciting new Starlight Club adventure opens with Lynn, devoted daughter of Bobby, waiting for her father to return from a visit to Queens, where he hopes to see some old friends.

When he arrives safely home they settle down with a coffee and some Sambuca, and Bobby tells Lynn of his day, and how it had bought back memories of a troubling period in 1975 when the Sicilians had arrived in Queens and set up in business selling drugs.

You see, Big Red Fortunato, owner of the Starlight Club, despite having his fingers in many pies did not condone drugs and prostitution on the streets of Queens. So when the word got back to him that the Zips were peddling drugs, he wasted no time in sending out his men to get more information, and after a ‘meeting’ with the Sicilians, he eventually discovered who the leader of the cartel was.

Determined to keep drugs of his streets, and with a fortuitous legitimate excuse for visiting Sicily, Red, Tarzan and Trenchie set off to meet Antonio Andolino, the person responsible for sending the Zips over, and the leader of one of the largest drug cartels in the world.

Used to being feared, Antonio has never met the likes of Red before and as the meeting deteriorates it is clear that the problem is not going to be solved simply.

In this powerful, exciting story we follow Red and his gang as they travel between Queens and Sicily, and very early on find ourselves fascinatingly ensconced in the world of the Sicilian mafia, with their proud honour, sense of family, blood oaths, and revenge killings.

This enthralling story brings together many of the past very memorable characters in the Starlight Club books, and if you are a fan, like me your will quickly remember them like old friends, however if this is the first book in the series you have read, it doesn’t matter, as everything is wonderfully explained and you will find yourself sinking into this excellent plot and its larger than life personalities with ease.

The author has managed through his amazing storytelling to bring the streets of Queens and the atmosphere of Sicily magically to life, in weaving together a clever story which includes drama, murder, mayhem, and kidnapping.

A really gripping thriller, reading The Starlight Club, An Easy Death, with its twist and turns, will keep you riveted to the page, and keen to know what will happen next, I highly recommend it.

Go figure… If I would have known I could tell a good story. I would have started writing a half century ago.

About the Book:

The powerful mob leader knew that selling drugs brings heat. Local and federal heat. It’s 1974 and Big Red Fortunato’s order that no drugs are to be sold in Queens has been broken. He discovers that the powerful Sicilian mafia has defied his rule and is selling drugs with utter disregard for who he is. Red has to stop them without starting a war he may not win.

Tarzan’s recently deceased father bequeathed his house to him, but upon visiting it Tarzan discovers squatters living in it… and they refuse to leave.

Red visits Sicily under the pretext of scouting for movie locations. He arranges a meeting with Antonio Andolino the man in charge of the burgeoning Sicilian drug trade, with the hope of convincing him not to ship drugs to Queens. To hedge their bets in case the talks fail, Sicilian mobsters kidnap two of Red’s valuable assets to use as leverage against him. Red has to figure out how to get them back unharmed.

The multi-award winning (10 awards) best selling series continues with the publication of the 9th Starlight Club book.

The Retribution by Shankar Kashyap

A thrilling psychological thriller.

Everyone has seen them, the drug addicts, gays, and drunkards, the dregs of society willing to do anything for their next fix, however, the attractions of these vices are rampant in all tiers of society, and every ‘job’ has its fair share of culprits, it’s just that some people manage to hide under a polished veneer of respectability, whilst others do so with only a small degree of success.

In this exciting psychological thriller a family from Kenya find themselves fleeing to Leicester in the UK. The differences between the two countries are so vast that it takes the main character a boy called Dev a long time to settle, however Dev’s father is determined to make the move to the UK a success, and so the unhappy Dev resorts to telling the pages of his little red book how he feels, a childhood habit which follows him through life.

As the years go by the father’s dream is realised as he establishes a temple, and he is proud of the prominent part his boys play in the day to day life there.

Dev is no longer the withdrawn boy of his youth, he has matured into a charismatic, dynamic man, a priest in the temple, loved by all. He works tirelessly for the rights of those around him, and it is this compassion and strength of character which makes him adored by the both the Asian, and local white community, people and leaders alike.

However Dev is hiding a dark secret from everyone, despite all the trappings of a successful man, a beautiful wife, new cars, designer clothes, he knows in his heart that he cannot deny the man he really is, the man who has grown from that young boy who left Mombasa Island all those years ago…

As the author takes us, through Dev’s experiences, deeper and deeper into the gay and drugs scenes in the seedier side of Leicester, we discover the other world which lives and loves in the shadows, the mafia who supply them, and how even the police officers working their cases have their own demons to face.

I found that this exciting, traumatic, and sometimes thought provoking story had me turning the pages eagerly, desperate to discover what happens next. Full of action from page one, I think that other readers who love a good psychological, murder mystery will absolutely love this engrossing story, after all, admit it, aren’t you just itching to know what Dev wrote in the pages of that little red book?

About the Book:

A psychological thriller of Dev Sharma, a good man, a ‘flamboyant’ priest with high profile and owner of a reputable Care Home, is brutally murdered. His murder brings the detective Sean O’Connor, a police inspector transferred from Ulster Constabulary, more bad than good, tries to make sense of the case whilst hiding his own double life as a serial womanizer and drug abuser. The question is whether the murder is of someone pious and holy and a pillar of society. Or is it a catharsis of a society gone bad? The answer is not so simple when the man accused of killing him turns out to be one of the dregs of society. The complexity lies in his separation of two lives but his own psychological reasoning, that he, as formed by his gods is required to practice a darker secret life of bisexuality, rent boys, and extreme behavior. The priest is seen battling with his choices and fears of disrepute. Yet at the same time attempting to justify his behavior to himself as unchangeable, a fall out of modern living. Sheena Achar is a sophisticated wife of the Priest, deep and unfathomable. She portrays the face of a devoted wife and a lover to the society. Does she have a different agenda? As the story unfolds, O’Connor is faced with mounting evidence against a homophobic group, a drug mafia, jealous boyfriend, a jealous wife, a drug addict and a rent boy. But only one of them is the real killer.

Dying For Revenge (The Lady Doc Murders Book 1) by Barbara Golder

51tkqgufxkl-_ac_us160_

This enthralling murder mystery is set in Telluride, Colorado, at Mountain Village, once a sleepy ranch town, it is now the place to live, with many of the rich and famous having homes there.

One of its residents is the favourite leading man of the moment, Mitch Houston, who seems to have it all, however, all this changes when his wife receives a phone call from a reporter, giving her news which will change their lives forever.

For the Western Slope of Colorado Chief Medical Examiner, Jane Wallace, Tuesday June 6th starts very early with a phone call from Sheriff Tom Patterson, there’s been a murder, and of course she must attend.

Five years have passed since the death of her beloved husband John, and Jane has never come to terms with the loss, she is living with it every day. Her other children have flown the nest, and now she lives with her son Ben, finding great comfort in her church, and she enjoys the company of the new young priest Father Matt. It is he who introduces her to Eoin Connor, a true crimes author.

One death is a tragedy, however, as the death toll steadily rises, it soon becomes apparent that the killer must be found, but there is only clue, the killer’s weapon of choice is a .22 rifle. Not much to go on.

Throughout the book there are many small stories giving the reader snapshot insights into the varied lives of its main characters, and building such a depth to the story that it is simply totally enthralling.

I loved reading this very cleverly written murder mystery, which was packed full of suspense, and can’t wait for Book 2 to be released.

81veu4s5t9l-_sx150_About the Author: Dr. Barbara Golder is a late literary bloomer. Although she’s always loved books (and rivals Jane in the 3-deep-on-the-shelf sweepstakes), her paying career gravitated to medicine and law. She has served as a hospital pathologist, forensic pathologist, and laboratory director. Her work in forensic pathology prompted her to get a law degree, which she put to good use as a malpractice attorney and in a boutique practice of medical law, which allowed her to be a stay-at-home mom when her children were young. She has also tried her hand at medical politics, serving as an officer in her state medical association; lobbying at a state and national level on medical issues, writing and lecturing for hire, including a memorable gig teaching nutritionists about the joys of chocolate for 8 straight hours, teaching middle and high school science, and, most recently, working for a large disability insurance company from which she is now retired. Her writing career began when she authored a handbook of forensic medicine for the local medical examiner office in 1984. Over the years she wrote extensively on law and medicine and lectured on medicolegal topics. On a lark, she entered a contest sponsored by the Telluride Times Journal and ended up with a regular humor column that memorialized the vagaries of second-home living on the Western Slope. She currently lives on Lookout Mountain, Tennessee with two dogs, two cats and her husband of 41 years.

About the Book: “Barbara Golder joins the ranks of Chesterton’s bloodthirsty heirs as she spins a tale that will delight mystery fans. With Dying for Revenge in hand, your beach experience is now complete!” Mark P. Shea, Author of Mercy Works Someone is killing the rich and famous residents of Telluride, Colorado, and the medical investigator, Dr. Jane Wallace, is on a collision course with the murderer. The Jerusalem Inception by Avraham Azrieli

51edhadb6gl-_ac_us160_

The book begins by setting the scene, it is midnight 1944, and Tanya, a young Jewish girl is in a car with her lover, and saviour, General Klaus Koenig. Klaus Koenig is meeting with his old school friend, and banker Armande Hoffgeitz for the last time, Germany is losing the war and the last of the jewels taken from the victims at the concentration camps must be hidden away safely.

But waiting to ambush the car are Elie and Abraham, renegade Jews, intent in wreaking revenge on the Germans for the monstrosities they are committing.

When Elie and Abraham find Tanya, they allow her to stay with them. Soon she and Abraham fall in love. However their happiness is brief, when Elie returns from a raid alone…

Now we jump forward 21 years, and discover that Abraham did not die, but is instead the very important leader of the Neturay Karta, a fiercely anti-Zionist Orthodox sect in Jerusalem.

Tanya is now a respected Mossad secret agent, but her feelings have never died for the handsome young man she thought she’s lost all those years ago.

Therefore, when she discovers he is alive, she has to meet him. However, he is married now, and has a 17 year old son, Jerusalem, or Lemmy, who is a Talmudic scholar. What’s more Abraham is using his important religious standing for another purpose, doing what he feels he must, in a desperate attempt to prevent a second Holocaust.

The repercussions for Abraham’s family are far reaching, and young Lemmy’s life changes in ways he could never have imagined, causing him to question his Talmudic lessons, and things he always believed were true.

Set in a turbulent, modern Jerusalem, this eye-opener of a book tells the story of three people, all survivors of WWII, and how their survival shaped their lives, and made them determined, in their own different ways, to ensure the horrors inflicted on the Jews would never be repeated again.

This book gives an amazing insight into what it was like to live in Jerusalem during those turbulent times, the differences between the Zionists and anti-Zionists, and a glimpse into the government workings, secrets, and agents behind the scenes. Also, as a non-Jewish reader, I enjoyed learning about the Jewish beliefs, and traditions, and finding out about the motivation and leadership behind such an extreme group as the Neturay Karta.

Woven within its pages are secrets and lies, loves lost and hidden, resentment and betrayal.

This amazing story develops in ways in which the reader would never have imagined, and I thoroughly recommend it to mystery and suspense thriller fans.

Cries of the Eagle By Michael E. Nathanson

5158pontrsl-_ac_us160_

As a non-Muslim I found this a fascinating story, as it opens your eyes not only to a different religion, but also its beliefs and teachings, however this story is so much more, it is a powerful story of murder, betrayal, secrets and lies, which when uncovered expose horrendous truths…

Ali and Hajid, are a devout Muslim couple who left their homeland of Iran in the 1980’s to start a better life in America. They settled in Dearborn, Michigan, and soon after had a son Ibrahim. They worked hard at bringing him up in the faith, and live a good life in their Muslim community. As parents they were happy to watch him stand on his own two feet, and accept that he is naturally growing away from them as he moves to Texas as part of his Qu’ran studies. However, the friends and mentors Ibrahim chooses once there lead him down a dark path, one which shapes his destiny forever.

Through the ages it has become accepted that most religions have a fanatical side, radical groups with one aim only, to ensure that in time, their religion is the only one which survives. With the threat of terrorism and fear of racism so very much a part of our modern world, the author has skillfully weaved his magic to write this story. Although fictional, it is easy to see it being true, indeed as I write this there are horrors being committed in the name of religion every day.

Mostly we base our views on ‘hearsay’ or newspaper headlines, tarring everyone with the same brush, and in our fear persecuting the innocent. Fascinatingly, this book reveals how the lives of an ordinary family, devoutly following their Muslim faith, can become inextricably entwined with the fanatical counter elements of the religion they follow, without their knowledge.

However, this story is not just about Muslim beliefs, it is an intriguing, action packed thriller. As the storyline unfolds we follow the investigations of Special Agent Gerry Bolton and Agent Jan Hanson of the FBI, and soon discover that nothing is as it seems…

In my opinion this is an exceptional book, and a real eye-opener. Not only is it an absorbing story but it has given me a real insight into a world I knew nothing about. If I could give it 6 stars, I would!

About the author:

New York born and California raised, Michael E. Nathanson comes from a family of writers (his father is well known for his book THE DIRTY DOZEN), and has held a lifelong dream of one day weaving a good story that also points to hope and light in a darkened world.

Prior to committing to being a writer, Michael has served as National Sales Manager for a medical products company in the healthcare industry, as Regional Sales Manager for a consumer product manufacturing company catering to mass retail markets, as VP of Sales for another consumer product manufacturing company catering to mass retail markets, and spent 15 years as CEO and partner in a privately held promotional marketing company.

During a business trip in the 1980s he traveled to an Arab Muslim country and became fascinated with Islamic religious culture, worldview and the repressive social system there. After 2001 his interest increased, in not only the politics of Islam, but also terrorists, terrorism and its mindset.

Michael believes ‘there is a segment of the Muslim population that is radicalized and very dangerous to the world, yet we cannot forget that it is just a segment of a very large religious population. That population still needs to be represented by positive heroes. I want the reader of my book to meet some rich characters and also hear a clear gospel message of hope and love that our world so desperately needs today.’

“Cries of the Eagle” is Michael E. Nathanson’s first novel. He lives in Dallas, Texas with his wife, Jan, and they joyfully serve together in the marriage ministry at their church – Marriage Counseling and Reconciliation Counseling. They have three grown children and are expecting their first grandchild in 2017.

About the book:

A devastating explosion leaves a wake of death and destruction in a suburban Dallas high school. Senior Agent Gerry Bolton and Special Agent Jan Hanson of the Dallas FBI take on the case of the apparent bombing, with little to go on. No manifesto has been revealed to declare the perpetrator’s identity or rationale, although terrorism is suspected. A later grotesque crime adds a further burden of urgency to the FBI’s efforts. Aziz Malawi, a bright young Muslim engineer, is puzzled by a friend and coworker’s failure to return to work from his vacation. He decides to check on him at his apartment. What he discovers sends him to the police, where he is immediately viewed as highly suspicious, is interrogated, and subsequently bumped up to the FBI for further scrutiny. It becomes clear to the FBI that Aziz is not a person of interest in the bombing crime, but quite the opposite – a devout American patriot, and a Muslim, who detests terrorism and terrorists. He entreats the FBI to allow him to become an active part of their investigation, which stretches from Dallas, Texas to Dearborn Michigan.Aziz joins the hunt for the loose thread that will ultimately unravel the fabric of a crime with a much deeper meaning and far-reaching impact than ever imagined. His sleuthing draws him into a world of danger that challenges his every resource and that of his FBI handlers who are sworn to protect him. As pieces of the greater puzzle begin to fit together, a grieving father, deeply struck by the tragedy of the crime surrounding his son’s death receives new hope, through an extraordinary gift brought to him by an unexpected benefactor. He must first confront himself, and stare down the evil that took his son and threatened to destroy his family in the process. After a business career, Michael Nathanson decided to undertake writing his first novel, “Cries of the Eagle,” fulfilling a life-long ambition. Coming from a family of writers, Nathanson dreamed of one day telling a story himself, one that could possibly also point to light and hope in the process. He lives in Texas with his wife, Jan, and they serve together in the marriage ministry at their church.

She Bites by Roger Arsht and Caitlin Hawker

9781480822214_p0_v1_s192x300

A fast paced psychological murder, mystery.

Being an animal lover I immediately warmed to the lead character in this fast paced psychological murder mystery, what a woman! However I have to say at the beginning that this is no soppy animal story, it enters the horrific dog fighting world and some of the scenes and stories in it are very graphically written.

Robyn is a veterinarian, passionate about animals and angered and appalled at the poor dogs who are bought in to her, maimed and worse, sometimes by the perpetrators of the crime. Vile characters with no compassion, or thought for life, either human or animal. However the face she puts on at the surgery is a mask. Behind it lies another Robyn a woman whose past has made her the way she is, angry, deadly, passionate and vengeful.

Jack Williams is a police detective who has been put on leave following a horrific case. He has no memory of the details, the event was so traumatic that for his sanity his brain has blocking it out.

Then there is Lizzie, the Corgi, Jacks therapy dog who he takes to Robyn’s surgery for treatment.

As the friendship between Jack and Robyn develops he soon realises that she has a hidden side, one which she can’t always control – sometimes it comes to the surface, and when it does…

The characters both major and minor are very well written. From the colourful and haughty Ms. Smyth-Anders, to poor Doctor Oliver, a therapist with his own problems. As the story evolves we witness the day to day life at the veterinary surgery and police station, and behind the scenes in the shady world of dog fighting.

This book is like no other I have read, in some parts fascinating in a horrific way, yet there is also compassion and love. The plot is very cleverly written by its two talented authors and contains some very clever twists. Definitely for the reader who wants something different and very fast paced.

Authors Biographies:

she bites

Roger Arsht – Roger Arsht is a mild-mannered high school English teacher by day, but dons his writerly cloak after class and pens the darker side of life. His noir thrillers ask some hard questions about corruption and violence in the world, and what to do about it (which sometimes involves evil veterinarians gone vigilante.)

Knowing his work needed a darker element, he contacted a former student of his who was loaded with talent, but also horrified him with her scary stories. Caitlin Hawker stepped up to the job and a collaboration was born.
When he’s not writing or hanging out in high school (his favorite place to be), Roger loves to fish, golf, travel and cook, not necessarily in that order. He and He and his wife have two grown sons, and live in Park City, Utah with their Golden Retriever rescue dog, Pumpkin.

Caitlin Hawker – Caitlin Hawker is a self-described “dark” persona who loves horror movies and the study of humanity’s darker side. As a child, it took her a while to learn to read and write, until her dad described to her that letters were pictures, and then suddenly it all made sense. Now a prolific writer, she began penning noir fiction in high school, in typical dark, brooding teenager fashion, which scared her teachers. What was a hobby later turned into a career when Roger Arsht walked into the college bookstore where she was working and asked her to help him write a book.

When she isn’t writing, she makes costumes and dabbles in art. Caitlin is a connoisseur of all things weird, and loves to collect facts.

She and her husband live in Salt Lake City, Utah, and Caitlin is planning for the day when she can get a dog.

About the book:

Salt Lake City, Utah – Co-Authors Roger Arsht and Caitlin Hawker team together to tackle the horrors of dog fighting in She Bites, a page-turning noir thriller that keeps readers on the edge of their seats.

Robyn Sparks may be every animal-lover’s favorite vigilante. Compassionate veterinarian by day, she’s converts to animal activist at night and exacts punishment to the cruel men whose animals find their way across her surgical table in various conditions of burnt, broken, and bloody. Having seen enough, Sparks decides to make it stop. For good.

The Starlight Club 7: End Game by Joe Corso

51Z8JtnnalL__AC_US160_

Although they live apart, Bobby has a wonderful relationship with his daughter Lynn, and she never tires of hearing his tales of the Starlight Club in Queens, New York. So, as they wait for the snow to clear before Bobby returns home, he tells her of a pivotal time in its history…

Suddenly he’s back in 1962, and the boys are at the Zebra Club celebrating the return of their mate Renato after his discharge from the army. However, when they witness a friend being beaten up across the road, they take chase. When they catch up however, in the blink of an eye the situation changes, as they could do in those days, and Renato is beaten nearly to death by the gang’s leader, Sailor Burke.

Now Bobby jumps forward to 1965, and at the Starlight Club Tarzan is suggesting a new barman for the club, none other than the aforementioned Renato Mellina. Red remembers him, and after a little talk about loyalty and family he is hired.

Soon however trouble comes knocking at Red’s door in the form of Aldo Zinera who has been hired to head the new government F.B.I task force on organised crime. He has a vendetta against Red, and leaving no room for doubt, or error, Aldo quickly informs Red that he will get him, uncover his crimes and see him sent to prison.

Realising the very ‘real’ danger he is in, and knowing that it is possible for charges to be made to stick, Red embarks on a fight, literally for his life.

Always used to taking care of his people, Red now has to look after himself and his new wife. Soon he realises there is only one course of action left open to him which will stop the vindictive Aldo.

It is drastic, however, once resolved, Red wastes no time in setting his plan in action, calling in favours and getting on with the job. It’s not the time for regrets, now is the time for action!

Undaunted, the plan is carried out, however, things hot up almost out of control as Red and his men find themselves literally fighting for their lives.

The question is – can Red pull the right strings, has he the necessary clout to survive?

With a fantastic storyline and brilliant characters this book is action packed right to the last page. Imaginative subplots, revenge, passion, love and betrayal, the Starlight Club 7 has it all, and is definitely a winner for all crime thriller fans.

As it closes, I ask myself, although this is called ‘End Game’ and is it truly the end of an era?

As the last page is read, only one person has that answer, and that’s the author, Joe Corso.

About the author: I’m a Korea Veteran. I Retired from the FDNY and I Grew up in Queens, New York. I started writing late in life hoping to help my grandchildren pay for their college education. I found to my surprise that I could tell a good story which resulted in my writing 29 books, garnering 18 awards and becoming a 4 time top 100 best selling author.

Go figure… If I would have known I could tell a good story. I would have started writing a half century ago.

Once the plan is set in motion things heat up as Red and his men literally fight for their lives.
