The summer holidays have arrived and as usual they are all at Harry’s house, however, when George arrives he is clearly agitated, and with good cause, they are soon to discover.

Reluctantly George tells his friends what has happened. His dad, Paul Collier who is a high level executive at Pat Pharma has admitted to him that he is scared. There has been a murder at work, a colleague has been held for questioning by the police, and now he is being watched, and what’s more, someone seems to be one step ahead of him all the time, and is sending him threatening letters.

On hearing George’s story, Alex, Harry and Angela all decide that they must help Paul discover who is threatening him, and so Alex and George talk to Paul, and with his help Alex manages to get a summer job at Pat Pharma. The job gives Alex inside access to the company, and with his new found ability to gather insider knowledge, and the others using their own unique skills, the group make a formidable team. However, as they rapidly become more involved in the case it is apparent that there is a lot more going on secretly than they could ever have imagined.

In their quest to help Paul the friends uncover deep resentments in Pat Pharma, and as the skeletons begin to come out of the cupboard, they realise that their investigations have put them into a very precarious position, as they find themselves pursued by dangerous criminals.

Despite being on a mission which is fraught with danger the friends’ comradeship, loyalty, tenacity, and friendship shine through, not only to each other, but also to those around them.

About the Book: Picking up immediately after the conclusion of Burton’s exciting novel Blood Justice, Blood on the Water opens as Justine, vampire Simone Gireaux and their mortal friend Teresa Diaz bring long-delayed vengeance to the man who murdered Justine’s own mother more than twenty years earlier. Now they have one more mystery to solve: the whereabouts of Teresa’s abducted daughter, Antonia. Their Nemesis in Blood Justice, Stephan Sinakov, had told them that Antonia was “sold”—but to whom, and for what purpose, they can only speculate. Confident that Antonia isn’t dead, the three women seek help from old contacts of Simone’s in Massachusetts. They are plunged into a world of magic and sorcery, where powerful witches struggle for control of an underground network. This battle involves plenty of fighting with mundane weapons and high-tech gadgetry as well as spells and psychic power. Helping Teresa, Justine and Simone in their quest proves to have a very high cost for their friends. But in the course of their adventures, Teresa learns that she herself is heir to a gift of magic power she had never before suspected. As the three follow clues that take them down the Eastern seaboard, Teresa struggles to learn how to control and use her abilities in a trial by fire. Ultimately, Antonia is traced to a yacht owned by a mysterious and unimaginably wealthy vampire. Meanwhile, both allies and old foes from Blood Justice are pursuing the three women from California. But the truth about Antonia’s abduction may shatter Teresa’s determination to reclaim her daughter.

His sense of justice earns him the respect of many, and he is even called to the Whitehouse for a meeting with President Ulysses S. Grant. Once there, he discovers that the president is in need of his help with the Indians, and offers him a very important job…

If you are fans of cowboys and Indian’s and the Wild West then you are going to love this book. Although it does mention some of the characters from the previous book The Adventures of the Lone Jack Kid, it is just as enjoyable to read as a stand-alone.

About the Book:

Charles Longstreet’s Broadway show ended after a year’s run and he wanted to give the actress something to remember him by. After receiving his gift the famous actress looked at her friend. “You know, Olga, some men have greatness thrust upon them and Charles Longstreet, even though he is not aware of it, is one of them.”
Charlie is bushwhacked on the trail by three hombres who after shooting him leave him for dead. Upon recovering he follows the old abandoned Butterfield Overland Stage Route where Charlie tracks the men to El Paso.

Cora who almost got Charlie killed with her curiosity stood on the wooden sidewalk in front of her store. He passed her as if she wasn’t there. Because of her immaturity she might have lost the man she always dreamed of meeting. Now it was too late to do anything but wave as he passed slowly by and think of what could have been.

Ned blew smoke from the barrel of his gun, then turned to the bartender. “He’s the Lone Jack Kid, and if these jerks would have left us alone, they’d still be alive now.”

Why is a wounded indian riding with Charles Longstreet, and why is Charlie wearing a marshal’s badge? And why does President Grant order him to the White House? These tantalizing questions are answered as the reader follows the Lone Jack Kid in his latest adventure when he rides the trail west to California.

Black Harvest (The Project Book 4) by Alex Lukeman

black harvestThis book has all the components of a brilliant thriller, it is action packed and keeps the reader on the edge of their seats.

We have always accepted that there are lessons to be learnt from the past, secrets buried, waiting to be discovered. Some, have been buried deeply, for a reason. They should never be found.

This is the story of what happens when one such secret is unleashed on this modern world. The plot unfortunately, is all too feasible, which is frightening really, however, everywhere we look now-a-days we see plenty of evidence of mans greed and lust for power.

Nick Carter, the main character is everything we would imagine a top agent to be, intelligent, ruthless, a trained killer, and a man able to deal with any situation. This type of job however, has its own penalties, including having to conquer the recurring demons from his past. Throughout the story, these threaten the future of a blossoming affair with one of his team mates Selena Connor, can people in jobs like theirs ever hope for love?

This is the first Alex Lukeman story I have read, but I shall certainly be looking out for more.

Review by Susan Keefe

Everyone knows that ants are everywhere; they are industrious, clever, work as a team and live in anthills, however, have you ever really thought what life is like for them?

ANTics  is a brilliant adventure story which will capture your imagination and ensure that you never look at ants in the same way again.

Set in a world literally at your feet, ant cadets Zube [ExuberANT] and  Brill [BrilliANT] decide to try and pass their  foraging flag and they agree to take the timid HesitANT with them.

However, their adventure is fraught with unforeseeable dangers, both from the giant two legs world above them, and from some of the other wildlife around them. Together, the intrepid explorers find themselves escaping dangers, overcoming challenges, vanquishing foes and making new friends in this captivating and educational book.

This delightful story, with brilliantly devised character names, not only gives children an insight into the world of ants but most importantly, they are taught through an engaging story about the importance of qualities such as loyalty, teamwork and respect.

About Dakota Douglas: Dakota Douglas is a former newspaper reporter from the North East of England, following her childhood dream of being a novelist. As a kid she read books under the bedclothes by torchlight. Now she dives under the covers, torch in hand, to scribble down conversations between her book characters in case she forgets them in the morning. She has written stories since she was about eight years old. She wrote them on a toy typewriter and her dad did the illustrations. When she wasn’t pounding on her typewriter, she was found smashing a tennis ball against the brick end of a block of garages beside her home. For hours on end she perfected her lob, backhand and forehand shots – all the time spinning stories in her head.

Review by Susan Keefe

The book opens with Captain Lopez, U.S. Special Forces hiding deep in the Amazon jungle, watching – the object of his observations is Eduardo Enrique, Bolivian drug lord and human trafficker.

Eduardo is a self-made man, a man who has learnt his lessons in the school of life and hard knocks. Having built up his empire with the help of his lifelong friend Benito, he is now rich, living the life of a playboy feeling secure in the knowledge that he’s surrounded by loyal staff and mercenaries, after all, is there anything money can’t buy?

With the scars of his life visible for all to see, and never having been a handsome man, he learns the hard way that women will use him, take advantage of his money, but in the end, they leave. However, a man with his extensive resources at his fingertips is not going to let this interfere with his fun, there are ways round everything, you just have to apply your mind and eventually a solution becomes apparent.

Then a U.S. Representatives daughter, celebrating her graduation with friends goes missing on holiday in Cancun, Mexico, her disappearance draws the attention of those in high places and her name is added to an existing list of missing women.

Politics is a clever game, politicians are always looking for opportunities, never missing the chance to shine as a hero to the American people, to stand out and be remembered for doing good. This is one such occasion, and combined with the added accolade of being seen to make a stand against the world of drug smuggling, its importance cannot be missed. Soon those who are in charge are making plans and the newly promoted Major Lopez, a man who is already up to speed with the subject, is given the task of handpicking a team of top Special Forces operatives to join him in this mission.

Soon the team find themselves deep in the heart of Bolivia, far into the Amazon rainforest, their mission underway, aware that they will be facing danger, both from nature and the powerful drug lord whose domain they are about to enter…

Written by an ex soldier, the military detail in this book is extensive and fascinating. I found myself transported deep into this dangerous world by the author’s highly descriptive writing and absorbing storyline in this action packed exciting epic novel.

About Joe Corso: I grew up in Queens, New York and I started writing to raise money to send my grandchildren to better schools. I’ve written 12 books and 6 short stories. Right now I’m working on the fifth installment of The Starlight Club series. When It’s completed I’ll write a sequel to the Lone Jack Kid which is a finalist in the 2013 Readers Favorite book contest in the Western category. The Starlight Club won the silver in the 2012 eLit TRUE CRIME category, and is a finalist in the 2013 Readers Favorite book contest. Another Readers Favorite finalist is my short story FIRE: Box 598.

Go figure. If I would have known I could write a good story, I would have started my writing career a half century ago.

About the book: Leave it to Lucky Campo to discover something new about his abilities. Leave it to the Chinese to find this of extreme value to their country. What began as good news becomes a curse. Seems Lucky’s life is full of surprises and the dilemma is now how to handle them all. The love of his life lives in another time period, yet Lucky pines for the luxuries of the present. The Inquisition just about seals those thoughts. The Spanish priests don’t understand anything about Lucky, the King’s wizard. As plagues abound, they become more convinced of his sorcery.
The old gang is still with Lucky and as always, they have his back, but is there enough time left? Can they defeat the brutal tactics of Quiang Shan, Director of China’s Secret Police? Who is the one who betrayed Lucky? And where is the Princess?
We travel from the dinosaurs to the Pyramids to twelfth century England and back to Astoria. Ah, dear old Astoria. Life is never dull with Lucky as he travels through the Time Portals.

Review by Susan Keefe

Lucky Campo has acquired the gift of time travel after a horrific injury, and as time progresses his abilities continue to evolve.

However, he is being noticed, and when the Director of the Chinese Secret Police, Quiang Shan discovers proof of Lucky’s abilities, he wants to capture him and gain this knowledge, at any cost. Thankfully Lucky has his good friends watching his back, but will they manage to discover who gave Quiang Shan the information and will he succeed?

For Lucky, love knows no boundaries, and in medieval times, his love Princess Krystina, has a revelation of her own for him. Fantastic news, but the Spanish Inquisition’s arrival and their unwanted interest in the King’s wizard puts his princess in danger, and soon Lucky finds himself using all his powers and resources to keep them safe.

Full of science fiction action and adventure, this fourth book in the series has all the excitement of the previous three, as Lucky and his friends travel throughout time. The stories are continuous, however, with the author’s attention to detail, and its self-explanatory plot it can happily be read alone.

If you’re looking for a good story with an exciting plot which will capture your imagination and keep you engrossed until the end I can thoroughly recommend this book.

The Time Portal 3: The Princess by Joe Corso

Time Travel at its best!

The Time Portal 3: The Princess (Time Portal, The)

In the Time Portal books, we follow the adventures of Lucky Campo, who, through a horrific injury, has acquired the ability to travel back in time through Time Portals.

In this book Lucky and his friend, Mickey, travel back to 12th century England where Princess Krystine is gravely ill. The medicines of the time have failed and the Queen prays for the wizards return. However, will it be enough, can Lucky change the course of history, and if so what will be the consequences?

Throughout history, there have been bloody rulers, with horrific stories attributed to them, like Vlad III Prince of Wallachia. Some believe that these traits can be inherited, surfacing at will. Vlad Koros is such a relative, a manipulator of wealth and power globally, a man used to getting what he wants. However, can he capture Lucky and control his powers and what would he discover if he could?

With the two events running simultaneously in his life, Lucky has to cope with many complications, both physically and emotionally, evolving his powers to survive.

Action packed and exciting, with a captivating storyline, amazing scene settings and descriptions, this book is really un-put-down-able.

Everyone knows that things happen for a reason and this story is the proof. Who would have believed when Lucky had an horrific injury it would leave him with an amazing gift – the ability to jump through time.

This time travel makes him incredibly rich, changing life for Lucky and his friends, opening new doors and making unbelievable things possible, like the inventions of his friend The Professor. However, things like this do not go unnoticed, others are watching him too.

This is the first sci-fi book I have read from Joe Corso, however, with its great characters, excitement, intrigue, suspense, adventure and brilliant storyline, all I can say is, I want to read more!

Great Action Adventure -Rumors Of Savages

If you’re looking for a really good action adventure book I would like to recommend Rumors Of Savages by Carrie Regan.

It is available in paperback and Kindle format.

I read through the night because this book was simply impossible to put down.

Rumors of Savages follows a TV Adventure channels attempt to ‘rescue’ a lost anthropologist, the twists and turns make for a fantastic adventure story.

I read afterwards that this author has had real experience in the field working around the world for National Geographic Television and as a Peace Corp volunteer in West Africa. This really enhanced the book,  providing amazing descriptions of a world most of us will never know.

Move over Indiana Jones and Congo, this must surely be a film makers dream come true!

The Revenge of John W by Joe Corso

Gripping tale of power, revenge and retribution.

The Revenge of John W

Set present day Mohave, Arizona, we follow the life and times of John W.

In this enthralling thriller about his fall and rise to power, we discover wonderful, very believable characters, and find John becoming the victim of a grave injustice, which leads to his meeting with Dutch Henry, a man who changes his life.

This book has a fantastic storyline, exciting, involving large corporations and powerful men, and of course John, who persistently tracks his prey – the people who destroyed his life!

I read this in one session, went through a myriad of emotions and could quite happily have picked it up and re-read it again straight away. Joe Corso goes from strength to strength; I can’t wait to read his next one.
