What I thought:

This enchanting story begins on Petunia Pottersfield’s 11th Birthday. Petunia is a fairy who lives in Furrow Grove. She has a mass of unruly hair, and she’s writing in her diary who she calls Bob. Why Bob, why not? After all everything deserves a name, doesn’t it? Bob is very special to her because he is the place where she confides all her hopes and fears.

You see, Petunia is lonely, she doesn’t have many friends because she is very clumsy, and she doesn’t like school either. She has a kind heart, it’s just that things just don’t turn out as she intends them too…

Then things look up, she has a new friend Alisia, and the girls have great fun together, until they notice that something has gone terribly wrong with the inhabitants of Furrow Grove, they have changed…

At first, the girls manage to hide, but then disaster strikes and Alisia is caught.

Petunia is desperate, and eventually finds help, but will it be in time to save Alisia and the fairies of Furrow Grove?

Find out in this charming and exciting children’s adventure, from the author of The Paladins of Naretia.

The Adventures of Super Stew: An unforgettable Journey by Kristi Lynn Domke

5168nAG+ciL__AC_US160_

Anyone who has loved a pet knows the absolute devastation its death leaves them feeling. Each one is unique, and holds a special place in our hearts.

This story is very sad, because it has come about by the death of a much loved pet, Super Stew or Stewie, the miniature Schnauzer, who was taken long before his time with IMHA (immune-mediated hemolytic anemia).

It is also though a wonderful story of love, and captures the essence of what our canine friends are to us, very special friends and companions. The author of this book makes Stewie’s passing from this world a wonderful adventure, for him, and this is what makes this book so special.

We all dread our friends passing, however as Kristi sends Stewie on his journey to the Rainbow Bridge, he is so happy, exploring and enjoying experiences which spark memories for him. He sings little songs and meets other dogs, all special in their own way, and all following their own paths. At one point he even meets two very important little characters who are not sure where to go, luckily he can send them on the right path.

Eventually he crosses the Rainbow Bridge and experiences life on the other side, he is a happy dog, surrounded by friends and what’s more, he knows he can see his mom when he wants, and she can see him too. You see they will never really be parted.

This book is just beautiful and is a lovely way of explaining the loss of a pet especially to children. And yes, I cried my way through the whole book, because, well because I am me, and I absolutely love animals and know the heartbreak losing them causes.

This is, without a doubt a lovely way of explaining something which is so hard for children to come to terms with, to them, and I hope the author finds as much enjoyment with her other canine friends as she did with truly ‘Super Stew!’

I was given a copy of this book by the author, in exchange for a honest review.

About the Author: Kristi is a feature writer at a university. She holds a B.A. in communications and her experience in higher education has led her to a passion for young, growing minds. Her first publication, The Adventures of Super Stew: An unforgettable journey shares the story of her dog, Stewie, and their special bond, as he travels to ‘Rainbow Bridge’. A tale for families and children of all ages, Kristi hopes this book will help anyone who has experienced the loss of a pet companion. https://www.facebook.com/TheAdventuresOfSuperStew/

This is the tale of the special bond between Stewie and his master. Bogart Listens (Bogart Series Book 2) by Diane Rose Duffy

51oHlWt-WbL__AA160_

Who cannot love the amazing Bogart? The most adorable family pet, always trying to help his family, join in the fun, and make people happy.

The only problem is that Bogart is a Golden Retriever dog, and his schemes to cheer up his people can sometimes go horribly wrong, like the time when he thought Grandpa Mike would like some of Ginger’s toys to cheer him up…

In this the second Bogart book, Bogart and his family have to adjust to the arrival of their extended family when ‘Little Mike’ has to go abroad with the army and his heavily pregnant wife and their little girl Ashley come to stay.

It is an adjustment everyone has to make and Bogart in his own way tries to make it right for all, listening to their worries and selflessly offering kisses and tummy rubs for free at times of stress.

The listening Bogart however uncovers many insecurities suffered by young and old alike and also highlights the worries of those who serve, or are the relatives of those serving in the armed forces.

Blame Bogart, the first book in the series had become such a favourite story for my grandchildren, that when I realised Bogart Listens had been released I downloaded it straight away on my Kindle Unlimited subscription. The children and I loved the story, and I must admit it made my husband chuckle too when I continually read excerpt out to him.

About the Author: Diane Rose Duffy is a California native who has a passion for books, a whopping coffee addiction and a perpetual craving for chocolate. After recently retiring from a lengthy accounting career in Silicon Valley, Diane presently enjoys the peaceful serenity of daily life in the Sierra Nevada foothills of Northern California. Diane Rose Duffy has completed two humorous romance novels and a funny children’s chapter book with the support of her husband whom she proclaims to be her ‘happily ever after’.

About the Book: Imagine being a dog and living in a family with a mom, dad, three little girls, a grandpa, a bird and a cat.

That’s my life!

Hi, I’m Bogart and I am a Golden Retriever. My family calls me their dog but I prefer to think of myself as a member of the Clark family.

Last year, we adopted Ginger, a very pampered and spoiled cat from the same big place I came from. My family says it’s an animal shelter. At first, Ginger and I had some major issues. However, we’ve finally reached a truce – sort of – to get along and let sleeping dogs lie, so to speak. Just a little doggie humor, folks.

Just when I think it’s safe to kick back and enjoy life, I discover our little clan will soon be growing again – with more people! Oh dear! Our house is getting pretty crowded. More importantly, I wonder who will steal all the attention away from me this time?

If only I could do more than just listen. How I long to speak in a human voice so I could talk to my beloved family and let them know how much they are loved.

Ghost of the Forbidden City by Sumita Mukherjee

51AfKHA0UwL__AA160_

This is a wonderful children’s adventure story set in Beijing the capital of China.

The stars are Keiko, her brother Kenzo and their pet squirrel Eji. The brother and sister are very lucky because their father Mr Kimura is a brilliant scientist and his genius has rubbed off on Kenzo.

Kenzo is naughty, and always up to mischief, however he is also very clever, and his inventions help to solve mysteries, like the one in this book.

In this adventure Miss Tyra, the history teacher has arranged to take a small group of children on an outing to Beijing. Kenzo and his Sister Keiko, their squirrel Eji, Aki (Kenzo’s best friend), and Keiko’s friends Midori and Sakura are chosen and are very excited.

They travelling around by bus, and their guide is called by Xiao. First, they visit the Forbidden City, where they have a lovely time discovering many interesting facts about the largest ancient palace in the world. Then, whilst they are in one of the Emperors chambers a scary thing happens, Miss Tyra sees a ghost!

That night Keiko starts to hear voices in the kitchen of their guest house, so she, Kenzo and Eji go to explore, but no one is there…

The next day they visit the Great Wall of China, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, and they have to get on it by taking a cable car ride. However, sinister things are at foot, and Midori nearly has an accident, but she is saved by one of Kenzo’s inventions, a very handy glue gun.

The city is amazing, and the decorations and celebrations at Gong Xi Fa Cai, (Chinese New Year), are very exciting. The children even see a traditional lion dance, and the Beijing National Stadium, however the ghostly presence is still around.

Back at the guest house, the children are determined to discover where the voices are coming from, and so they wait in the dark… and then they make a discovery.

So, what do they find?

Do ghosts really exists?

Who can they hear talking, what are they saying, and what are they trying to do?

Well, all I can say is that in the end all the questions are answered, more than once Kenzo’s glue gun saves the day, and they all agree Miss Tyra is the best teacher in the world.

A wonderfully informative children’s mystery adventure, with lots of surprises and a happy ending. It is beautifully illustrated by Subhajit Das and has amazing graphics by Loo Ng Pek Mun. For more interesting stories like this one visit http://www.keikokenzo.com/book

Blame Bogart by Diane Rose Duffy and Lilly Bicho

51qQ39PFD0L__AA160_

Firstly, I just have to say that this book was a real joy to read.

I openly admit to adoring my dog and I know there are hundreds like me out there, if you are one of them, you will love this book. I downloaded it with Kindle Unlimited because my grandsons are here and love pets but I enjoyed it as much as they did.

The author writes as Bogart, the Golden Retriever, puts herself firmly in his paws, and the result is hilarious.

Bogart’s full name you see is Bogart Clark, his family consist of Papa Greg, Mama Wendy, and the triplets Cassandra, Savannah and Lilly. Poor Bogart is at a loss to understand why one day his family decide to get a fluffy white cat, called Ginger, after all, they have him!

If this is not bad enough, Ginger the cat decides to take over, as we know they do. Bogart certainly feels very put out, and what’s more, the nasty cat is determined to plot against him, setting him up for falls and scratching his poor nose – what is a dog to do?

Just as he feels he will never be popular again, help arrives from an unexpected source, Grandpa Mike’s pet parrot Nellie. When grandpa and Nellie move in, quickly Ginger realises that she has met her match in the wise old bird and a truce is needed…

It is lovely that this book is dedicated to the author’s granddaughters and that Lilly has helped her and is co-author of the book, and Savannah and Cassandra will be working jointly on marketing and sales.

A truly delightful book which I am sure will be loved by young and old alike.

At first it was just my immediate family and I, but slowly we began to expand into the large family we are today. We didn’t always get along, but as we’ve grown, we’ve learned a valuable lesson. Treat others the way you want to be treated. If we’d never learned that, our lives would have turned out quite sad!

I hope you enjoy reading about my amazing family and all the humorous ups and downs we’ve encountered together on our journey towards learning to respect one another.

Bibi & Babu in Peru (Bibi & Babu Travel Series Book 2) by Bonnie Toews and John Christiansen

More amazing adventures from Bibi and Babu and this time they are visiting Peru!

bibi and babu in peru

After Bibi and Babu [Grandma and Grandpa in Swahili] enjoyed their adventures so much in Africa they decided to visit Peru, and I for one am very glad that they did.

What a wonderful book this is. Everyone has heard of the incredible temple of Machu Picchu, the amazing Lake Titicaca, and the enormous geoglyphs which can only be seen via satellite. But how did they come to be there, who made them, and when? Well scientists still have many questions to answer, however, in the meantime Bonnie Toews and John Christiansen, in their unique storytelling way decide to discover as much as they can for themselves. So, in November 2014 they took a plane to Lima and started their adventure.

Their journey of discovery began by visiting the incredible Larco Museum, in Lima, which houses an amazing collection of ceramics, textiles and artefacts, all beautifully displayed. Lucky for us, they took plenty of pictures, because from this visit we are able to see and understand the importance of all the gold and silver body ornaments which were worn by the Inca nobility.

They then visited the former capital of Peru, Cusco and visited its beautiful buildings, and the fortress-temple Saqsaywaman (pronounced Sexy Woman), which was made a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983. There are some amazing photos of visitors standing next to the enormous stones, which beg the unanswered question as to how did the Inca’s all those years ago managed to get them into place, and know to position them in such a way that they have withstood earthquakes? Are the ancient legends correct, what do you think? You will have to read the book to discover what these legends are. Whilst they were there, they even managed to learn the difference between Llamas and Alpacas.

Then, their travels then took them on the luxurious Perurail Vistadome train to the magical site of Machu Picchu, which rises over 6,000 feet above the Urubamba River. Steeped in history and hidden from the outside world for many years, this wonderfully preserved national monument was a sight to behold.

Their last trip was to Lake Titicaca, its incredible floating islands, and Taquile island. It is even possible to discover in this very interesting book, how the floating islands are made, who lives on them, and the incredible properties of the Totora (Reed) both as homes, boats, souvenirs and as a medicine.

Although aimed at a young audience, I have to say that I loved this book. It is so well written and totally absorbing. Not only does it contain plenty of colourful pictures of this amazing couple’s travels, and the wonderful sites they have seen, it opens up the people, history, life and customs of the wonderful country of Peru.

About the authors: Bibi & Babu are Swahili names for Grandma and Grandpa. When journalist Bonnie Toews and her partner, John Christiansen, a naturalist and landscaper, traveled through Central Africa in 2013, their safari guides fondly nick-name them “Bibi” and “Babu.” Their African journey is woven so intimately within Bonnie and John that, when they returned home, they wanted to assemble a memory book to share with their grandchildren. As they worked on it, they came to realize they are not describing another travel guide for tourists but reliving a journey other adults and children can also share and read together. This simple beginning to the BIBI & BABU TRAVEL SERIES also captures their love story. Dedicated caregivers to their spouses, who suffered from long illnesses before they died, Bonnie and John, now in their seventies, discovered they had much to live for as they join hearts in their sunset years.

About the series of books: Reading with your child or grandchild not only entertains them, it can also strengthen the bonds between you. The BIBI & BABU TRAVEL SERIES take you both on armchair adventures to faraway lands with beautiful photographs and stories as Bibi and Babu mingle with the local people, discover the magic of their customs and folklore, and embrace lives very different from ours.

This second volume in the series, BIBI & BABU IN PERU, explores the ancient ruins of the Andes Mountains:

  • Cusco–the “belly button” of the Inca Empire,
  • the Lost City of the Incas on Machu Picchu Mountain and
  • the man-made floating islands of the Uros people on Lake Titicaca.

How could the Incas fit together massive walls of boulders and stones with no tools and no wheels? Yet, these Inca ruins have withstood devastating earthquakes while modern buildings have crumbled. Even more puzzling are recent satellite images suggesting ancestors of the Peruvian Indians were linked to outer space. With no written records, how do you separate myth from fact? Join Bibi and Babu on their amazing journey through Peru.

These books are not travel guides for tourists. They are designed for adults and children to share and read together. Ten per cent of the series’ royalities are dedicated to the Kilimanjaro Orphanage Centre in Moshi, Tanzania.
