HARRY THE HONEST HORSE by K. A. Mulenga

Naughty Hank learns an important lesson from Harry the Honest Horse.

Harry the horse lives in Horseville, a beautiful place with a lovely meadow and lake. He is worried though, his best friend Hank just can’t resist fibbing, even though he knows it’s not right. Then, when Harry challenges him, his answer is always that life would be boring without fibs.

Poor Harry is not happy, deep down he knows Hank is being naughty, and yet he’s his best friend, what can he do?

One day Hank managed to persuade Harry to play a prank on an old couple, Mr. and Mrs. Neigh. Together the horses take Mr. and Mrs. Neigh’s hay, and the next morning when asked if they know where it is, before Harry can answer, Hank says that a big wind blew it away!

This is bad enough, but when Hank goes a little further with his pranks on the old couple, Harry just has to confide in his dad, who tells him of a wise saying, which Harry takes in.

You see, Harry is not a bad horse, he is just being led into mischief by his friend. Empowered by his dad’s words, Harry when asked by the old couple if he knew what happened, chooses the path of honesty, and is wonderfully rewarded for it.

When his friend Hank sees what has happened, it makes him think, and he realises that he is wrong, it is not good to be a fibber, honest is really the best way to be. Harry has taught his best friend a valuable lesson.

In this lovely story the author teaches children, through a simple, yet effective story, beautifully illustrated, that being honest is really very important. Even if your friends are being naughty and telling lies, it is better not to follow them, but instead tell the truth, and set a good example!

About the Book:

Harry the horse seems to have it all. He lives in a beautiful place, is good-looking and his cheerful nature means he is loved by every one of his many friends. Harry’s life is simple, joyful and trouble-free.
Well, most of the time, anyway! Harry’s best friend, Hank, has a bad habit of getting up to no good. He is a terrible prankster, always thinking up new ways to play jokes on others. Now, although Hank is great fun to be around, Harry notices that sometimes his pranks go too far and, instead of causing laughter, they cause hurt. The worst part about Hank’s pranks for Harry is that Hank also tells great big fibs to get himself out of trouble.
Because Harry spends so much time with Hank, he finds himself getting involved in Hank’s pranks. He knows that what Hank is doing is wrong…but he doesn’t know what to do about it. When he tries talking to Hank about what he believes, his advice falls on deaf ears. Not only does Hank not seem to take life seriously at all, but he also doesn’t seem to understand that what he sees as harmless fun is no fun at all for others! Oh, and then there’s the fibbing part.
Harry is at a loss of what to do and asks his father for help. His dad gives him some valuable advice on how to handle his wayward friend. The next time Hank does something naughty, Harry does something he’s never done before. Instead of keeping quiet and just wishing his friend could change his wicked ways, he finds his voice and speaks up!
What will happen next? Will Hank still want to be Harry’s friend? Will he ever learn the difference between harmless fun and harmful pranks? And most importantly, will he ever start telling the truth? Read on to find out…
Most of us have that “fun friend” who regularly gets us into trouble, right? Harry the Honest Horse is a delightful story which addresses important concepts such as not letting a joke go too far, and the value of being a champion for the truth, no matter how hard it may be sometimes. The fun-loving friends in the story are relatable to young readers, who will no doubt empathise with Harry when faced with the difficult decision of keeping his loyalty to a good friend versus standing up for what he knows is right. An all-round happy ending confirms to the young reader that honesty is always the best policy!

DONK AND THE STUBBORN DONKEYS by K.A. Mulenga

An inspirational children’s book.

My two granddaughters just loved this bright and inspirational children’s book. It tells the story of Donk, a little donkey who’s a bit of a loner. He’s the youngest in the family, and nobody has time for him. All he hears the farmer saying is that donkeys are stubborn. Why does he say that? Are donkeys really stubborn? And, if they are, why?

Well Donk, like all young animals is curious, and tries to discover the answer. He asks everyone, his mother, his brothers and sisters, even the magical purple fairy donkey Jack. “Why are donkeys stubborn?” Everyone just says, “That’s just the way it is,” but that’s not good enough for Donk, he wants to know the reason why.

Children need to ask questions to grow as people, and develop their understanding of their world, and it’s the same for all creatures. In this bright, and beautifully illustrated children’s book, the author, using the cute and endearing character of Donk, has cleverly demonstrated to children that it is good to question things, and search for answers. Just because they are told “That’s just how it is,” that’s not a reason to accept it, or indeed believe it is true! This book empowers them to believe that they can stretch boundaries, and open new horizons, not only for themselves, but for others too.

Writing truly runs in the blood of Kalenga Augustine Mulenga, the author of this Amazon #1 Bestselling children’s book, and others. His father was the first black editor of the Zambia Daily Mail, and his brother was a poet. He started writing aged 10, but his passion has been reignited by his 11 year old son.

A wonderful inspirational children’s book which will be enjoyed by children either by it being read to them, or reading it themselves when they are able. Highly recommended!

Bubbles Galore (Super Speed Sam Book 11) by Monty J. McClaine

Bubbles Galore (Super Speed Sam Book 11) by Monty J. McClaine

Bath time can be great fun, especially if there are toys, and plenty of bubbles!

Yet again six year old Jack is up to mischief. Its bath time in the McClaine household, Molly is watching her favourite programme, the Cat Walk Kittens, and mum has just run Jack his bath, bubble bath included. However, once mum has left him to see to Molly, Jack decides he wants more bubbles, he concludes that mum must have read the instructions wrong on the bottle, and so he adds more bubblybath, and for good measure turns the taps up too.

Now, anyone who has done this knows just how quickly the bubbles multiply. Very soon the room fills with bubbles. Quickly Jack realises that it’s a good idea to escape, but poor Sam is left inside.

If you, like our family are fans of this series, you will know that Sam is extremely smart and has been given special powers, and it’s a good thing he has!

Thinking fast, Sam springs into action. However he soon discovers that paws are not very good at turning taps, or taking plugs out, and so he uses his special chant to change into his superhero persona, Super Speed Sam. Chant finished, and magically sensibly dressed for scuba diving, he sets off into the murky depths of the bathtub, hoping, now he is better equipped, although looking rather like a frog, he can save the day. It is not long however before he discovers that he is not alone. Incredibly, his chanting has created a magical underwater world, where the children’ bath toys have come alive.

As this adventure unfolds Sam realises that he must use all his cleverness skills to save the day by stopping the bathroom from flooding. The question is, if he succeeds, what will happen to his new bath toy friends when the water they live in goes down the plug hole?

Yet again, Monty J McClaine, the author of this series has written a wonderful story. It was thoroughly enjoyed, and captured the imagination of my granddaughter today, and I am sure it will be loved by all children who read it.

About the Author:

Proud winner of the 7th Annual Beverly Hills Book Awards (2018) in the “Environment” category for The Rescue Elves – The Plastic Pollution Adventure.

Proud winner of the 5th Annual Beverly Hills Book Awards in the “Holiday” category for Super Speed Sam – Santa’s Rescue Dog.

I feel that some of the natural interactions between family and friends are gradually eroding, if not already completely worn away for some. And I was reminded of a C.S.Lewis quotation –

“A children’s story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children’s story in the slightest.”

It also feels like the simple joy of laughing or crying among family and friends is being replaced by beeps, bops and demands to ‘add new features’ or ‘why doesn’t this work?’ or ‘who’s hogging the Wi-Fi?’.

So I set out to create a fun and exciting series of children’s short stories, with lots of adventure and splashes of humor, all paced to hold children’s attention whether reading or listening… at least that’s my hope!

Stories that will delight both boys and girls, the young and old, and, of course, moms and dads! Tales that allow a return to simpler values, kid-like imagination for both children and adults and, I sincerely hope, bring families closer together.

About the Book:

When bath time becomes go-time, this super-speeding, frog-like canine springs into action and discovers the adventure of a lifetime lives under the water! In a brand-new shrinking story of magical proportions, Super Speed Sam is going down–the drain that is!

When Jack’s bubble bath becomes an unsupervised disaster, it’s up to the McClaines beloved basset hound, Sam, to spring into action as a bouncing frog-like fiend and get to the bottom of the trouble–and the tub! What could possibly go wrong when a superhero dog dives under the waves? Well, as Sam soon learns, not all the bath toys are friendly and there is a bit more than just bubbles to beware as he surges into action! Will Sam pull the plug in time before the bathroom gets completely flooded? Or will he bite off more than he can chew when he goes paw-to-fin with Jack’s brand new shark toy? Dive into this all-new adventure and find out how bath time became adventure time!

Little Bunny’s Own Storybook by Margaret Welwood

A lovely inspiring story.

This is a lovely story, beautifully illustrated, about very happy Little Bunny. He loved his daily routine, the stroll down the path with his mum and dad, and best of all his visit to the library, where each day he picked a different book to read.

Little Bunny just loved getting immersed into the stories, he could meet animals from all over the world, face imaginary dangers, see people doing amazing jobs, and have great adventures all within the pages of a book.

However one day the library is closed, and poor Little Bunny is so sad. What can he do now, there is nothing which can compare to reading his stories, or is there…

What Little Bunny discovers is that you can make your own worlds if you try, with dramas, adventures, fun and danger in them, all you have to have is imagination, and pens, pencils, and paper of course. Also, when you have made up your own story you can read it to others for them to enjoy.

What a fantastic tool this book is for teachers and parents enabling them to inspire their children’s creativity, whatever the reading or writing ability of the child. I read this with my grandson and not only did we have great fun looking at the illustrations, but he was inspired into making up his own little story and enjoyed illustrating it too!

I would highly recommend this children’s book, not only for the hours of fun which can be had creating a story and illustrating it, but also because in doing so you are not only widening the child’s talents, but also giving them a mechanism for escape into another world.

About the Author:

Great Aunt Lily taught me to read, my mother parked me in the book section of The Bay while she did her shopping, and my grade 12 English teacher encouraged me to write.

So here we are *several* years later . . . .

I have written over 100 traditionally published magazine and newspaper articles. I also edited a diabetes education guide that won first place in the reference category of the Writer’s Digest Self-Published Book Awards (2010).

And I taught English as a Second Language for years with stories as a mainstay.

Now a new door has opened into Storyland . . . the world I’m exploring with my grandchildren. My first picture book for children, “Scissortown,” is the only one I know of that offers a choice of inside back cover. “Marie and Mr. Bee” offers a choice of last page.

I also like to encourage young readers and writers–my site features stories and art by children 7-12 years old. You may wish to check out some of their interesting and colorful creations.

A weekly storytime with young children as well as time spent with my grandchildren have made for some interesting discoveries about children’s literature. I blog about these discoveries and review my top picks on Goodreads and other sites.

Locally, I help adults improve their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills one-on-one. I also offer editing and proofreading services.

About the Book:

The story here is told in verse
to help your child with reading.
Your child will find the words that rhyme
and follow as you’re leading.

This picture book for children between the ages of three and eight tells the story of a little rabbit who takes matters into his own hands when he finds the library closed for inventory. Little Bunny’s Own Storybook is a celebration of libraries, literacy, family, and the initiative and creativity of children (both human and rabbit).

Fearne Fairy and the Dandelion Clocks by Sarah Hill

This delightful Fearne Fairy adventure takes place on a beautiful March morning. With the daffodils swaying in the breeze, and bird song filling the air as young chaffinches practice their singing.

On such as super day, in her moss covered tree trunk home deep in the middle of Whimsy Wood, Fearne Fairy is in the mood for spring cleaning, however, it isn’t long before her tummy reminds her she hasn’t had her breakfast.

We all know that fairies are magical, and can do amazing things, but like ordinary people there are things they have problems with, and Fearne really does have trouble with her landings, and unfortunately on this day she crashes at the bottom of the stairs and hurts her head.

No worries, she thinks, I have just the remedy hidden in my conker cupboard, her special, sore-head-fixing dandelion drink. However, when she goes to the cupboard she discovers that there is no drink left!

What can she do! Well she must have a good think, and what better to help her than a crumpet or four? Just as she finds the solution, she hears a rumpus outside and discovers Bertie and Beatrice, the bunny twins fighting over a dandelion clock! Of course, like most fighting, it ends in tears and also poor Beatrice bumps her head. The situation is urgent, now there are two sore heads and no sore-head-fixing dandelion drink.

But will the bunny twins remember where they got the clock from, because, surely there will be dandelion leaves there, and hopefully there will there be enough for Fearne Fairy to make some of her magical drink.

It is time for a lesson Fearne decides, and so she tells the twins, after their fight about the importance of sharing, and about her family’s motto of ‘share and share a-like.’

But as to the spring cleaning, well…

This is a truly enchanting fairy tale, magical and yet with a little lesson about the importance of sharing woven in. I read it to my little granddaughter and she was captivated, loving both the story and the wonderful illustrations. I look forward to sharing more Fearne Fairy tales with her as we explore this exciting series together.

Lessons from Shadow: My Life Lessons for Boys and Girls by Shadow Bregman

What a wonderful book for children. Not only is it cleverly written by a worldly black Labrador called Shadow, of course kindly penned by his human daddy Walter Bregman, but it contains some important life lessons for children to learn, and other dogs of course as long as their mummies and daddies read it to them. Because you see, as I already know, but many people don’t, dogs to understand us, and talk to us too!

When Shadow’s mummy and daddy decided to take him home from the rescue centre Shadow had already learnt a lot of good, and bad things. Sensibly they took their other dog Betsy to say hello to shadow before they made a final decision, but they didn’t need to worry, they quickly became friends. Betsy did like to be the boss though, and could be a bit of a bully some times, but the story behind that is in one of the lessons.

Shadow’s lessons cover many subjects. In the first one, Shadow admits to being very greedy, (like most dogs) and tells of the mischief which can be caused if the pantry door isn’t closed, especially if dogs pinch the chocolate!

As we settle down to enjoy the tales Shadow tells, it is fun to look at life through his eyes, taking a dogs eye view of life and situations. For instance, escaping is fun, the bigger the fence the better, until you get to the other side, and discover you want to go home! Then things can be pretty scary!

Family life is varied and sometimes sad, and Shadow explains in his own sensitive, wise way, how he and his daddy coped with sad times in their lives, and the loneliness which affected them after.

Of course the world is sometimes confusing for a dog. In the chapter called lessons, we discover some of the things which we, as humans, don’t really understand about dog communication, and some of the things which puzzle them. Shadows summing up of this lesson is priceless, but you will have to read the book to find out what it is.

If you love dogs, whether you are young or old, you will find this book enchanting. For those of us who love our dogs, it is affirmation that they do understand us, and can teach us so much. The chapters in this book cover very important issues for children, and guide them sensitively in the right direction, to enable them to deal with various situations.

I loved this book! Shadow is a very wise dog and I hope he and his daddy write some more so I can enjoy learning more about their lives, and the important lessons they have to share.

About the Book and Author: Shadow Bregman, a twelve-year-old rescue dog, passes on to six- to ten-year-old boys and girls the life lessons she has learned. This book can be read by a child alone and is also ideal as a teaching book. Shadow will ask every child what lesson is learned before it is revealed. Because of its short chapters and charming illustrations, it is an ideal bedtime book.
This book has been kindly translated for Shadow by Walter Bregman his Daddy.

FEARNE FAIRY AND THE LANDING LESSON by Sarah Hill

In this delightful children’s book we join Fearne Fairy as she is wakened by the dawn chorus in Whimsy Wood on a marvellous May morning.

Fearne is a lovely kind fairy, but she has a terrible voice, so when she asks to join in the chorus the woodland birds don’t want to hurt her feelings, after all why make someone unhappy if it isn’t necessary? Instead, they divert her thoughts by asking how her best friend Mustard the Magpie Moth Caterpillar is.

Racing down stairs she finds Mustard happily sleeping soundly in his little leaf basket by the stove. Fearne loves her friend so much that she decides to make him a special breakfast, and sets off for the Woodland Store. However, although like other fairies Fearne can fly, her landings are not so good, and on her return she crashes. Startled awake, Mustard suggests that she needs to get some help perfecting her landings, and she agrees.

Thus begins a magical adventure, as we join Fearne and Mustard in their search for Bristle Bumblebee and Dewberry Dragonfly, flying experts who Mustard thinks will be able to help her.

After breakfast, with picnic packed, they set off on their quest to find Bristle and Dewberry.

The woods are wonderful, and most of the creatures are having fun, and enjoying the lovely May weather, but then they come across Bromley the Badger, and his friend, who is a very sad Hedgehog called Humbug.

However, when Fearne discovers the cause of Humbugs unhappiness she realises that it is within her powers to make him happy again, and so she waves her magic wand, and says a special spell, making things right.

Pleased to see his friend happy again, Bromley tells them that Bristle and Dewberry have opened a Flying School down by the purple orchid patch, to help the May bugs and stag beetles who are having problems learning to fly. So off Fearne and Mustard go in search of Bristle and Dewberry’s Flying School.

But will they find it?

And, if they do, will Bristle and Dewberry be able to help Fearne improve her landing, after all, she isn’t a May bug or stag beetle?

Well you will have to read the story to find out the answers to these questions, but the only thing I can say is that practice really does make perfect…

The wonderful way this magical children’s story is told, and the way its beautiful illustrations compliment the story makes this not just a book, but a prized possession, the type of book which will be handed down from child to child, through generation.

I would liken it to the famous The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame, and think it definitely deserves a place on every child’s bookshelf.

Nickerbacher by Terry John Barto

This is a simply wonderful story about a dragon called Nickerbacher, whose job is to guard the Princess Gwendolyn who lives in a tall, tall tower. However the princess and Nickerbacher are friends and their favorite thing is staying up watching the live performances on The Late Knight Show every evening.

Soon we discover that Nickerbacher isn’t your ordinary dragon, oh he knows his job is to guard the princess, fight the knights who try to rescue her and generally be a big bad dragon, but that’s not what he wants to do the rest of his life – he has a dream. Nickerbacher wants to become a stand-up comedian! He hates the stereotyping of dragons and wants to show the world a different side, a caring, funny dragon, so dragons can be acceptable members of the community, not third rate citizens.

So, when Prince Happenstance arrives, fresh from the Prince Guild, with a mission to rescue the princess, he soon discovers that Gwendolyn is no ordinary princess, and Nickerbacher no ordinary  dragon. Before he knows it he finds himself agreeing to take part in a plan cooked up between them to get Nickerbacher to La La Land so he can audition for The Late Knight Show, and make his impact on the world!

La La Land they discover is quite amazing, full of many sorts of wonderful creatures, all living with the humans, but there are no dragons, so Nicerbacher arrival causes quite a stir, and everyone wants to know why he is there.

However being there is only the beginning, can he get an audition with Johnny Kingston, and if he does, how will it go?

Find out if Nickerbacher’s dreams come true, will he star on The Late Knight Show?

Tricycle and Friends: True-Life Adventures of a Three-Legged Golden Retriever and His Rescued Farm Animal Friends by Lester Aradi

T

This wonderful children’s books is about a three legged retriever called Tricycle who is adopted by a family, and goes to live at their farm.

Once there, he meets Buckaroo, the miniature donkey. The two quickly become friends, and Buckaroo introduces Tricycle to some of the other animals. Many are adopted too. He soon discovers that there are all sorts, not only other dogs, but horses, llamas, chickens, and honey bees.

They go to meet Cantara and Pink, the llamas, and discover fascinating things about these lovely animals. However, the icing on the cake is when they learn that there will be another new arrival at the farm the following day, a little baby alpaca! Everyone is excited! But what is an alpaca, and what will it be called?

The author teaches in a very gentle way, through the experiences of Tricycle and his friends, how being different is okay. And, as the book progresses we learn about bullying, the importance of adopting animals, and many other things.

I loved the way the reader gets to meet lots of the animals through delightful illustrations and lovely pictures. I thing they are so important in children’s books, and bring the farm wonderfully to life, adding so much to this enchanting tale.

I can’t wait to read more adventures from Tricycles and his friends.

About the Book:

When Tricycle, a rescued, three-legged Golden Retriever arrives at his new home, he gets the attention of the other animals who live there. They want to know what happened to his fourth leg, and they wonder if it hurts and if it slows him down.

As Tricycle gets to know the other residents of the farm, he learns there are a lot of different creatures who have a wide range of abilities and interests. He enjoys meeting the other animals and loves the peaceful quality of his surroundings.

Based on a true story, Tricycle and Friends shares a story about a group of rescued animal friends and their real-life journey of serving as therapy animals for children with special needs. Through story and pictures, it addresses topics such as adoption, bullying, dealing with physical challenges, death of a companion, and friendship.

Dynomike: Talent Show Time by Frankie B Rabbit

I loved reading Dynomike: Talent Show Time with my grandsons! It tells the story of what happens when a teacher puts up a poster for a talent show at school. It is asking for entrants who have all sort of talents, and it gets Dynomike and his friends thinking.

Each one ponders on what a great chance it is to show off their special talent, and win a prize! Out comes their competitive spirit, and they start working out what THEY can do, and how THEY can win. They are all very talented in their own special ways, and each is sure they are the best.

This sets Dynomike thinking, he takes himself off and is sad, it’s a pity that there has to losers for there to be winners. How much better it would be if they could all win!

So, he gets all his friends together, and tells them his plan.

But will his friends be interested?

Do they want to work together, and can they?

All is revealed on Talent Show night, when we find out what happens, and who steals the show.

This series of books is very special because it shows children, through wonderful rhyme, and beautifully eye-catching illustrations, using the lovable characters of Dynomike and his friends, the importance of friendship, support and team work, in many different situations.

About the Author: Frankie B. Rabbit was born and raised underground; the underground rap scene that is. Walking alone through the rough soils of Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and now currently in New Jersey; he traveled most of the North East battle rapping other upcoming hip-hop artists at local night clubs to only find himself getting paid in vegetable scraps and free admissions. While, he was winning a majority of his freestyle rap battles, Frankie B. Rabbit was only participating for bonus money to keep his whiskers afloat. Frankie B. Rabbit’s talents were not self-fulfilling for him, and he was seeking to take his talents elsewhere; hopefully to make a difference.

So, while, his rap career was dragging with monotony, he enters, yet another, freestyle rap battle at B.B. Kings in New York City—which ended being his last rap battle after being defeated by an 8 year old second grader in the first round—his name was Dynomike!

“The lyrical niceness, my rhymes so tight I give nightmares to vice grips! This mic is five bucks, this night is five bucks, and Dynomike is — is priceless!” That was only one of the sixteen bars he dropped on Frankie B. Rabbit.

About the Book: Best Selling Author (Frankie B. Rabbit) known for Dynomike: Back to School, and Come At Me, Bro brings you another great story called Talent Show Time.

From the Dynomike Series:

It’s talent show time at Dynomike’s school, and everyone is pumped to show off their skills and beat their friends for the grand prize. But when the competition starts to come between him and his best buddies, Dynomike realizes that there must be a better way.

Competition can bring out the good and bad in all of us in our quest to be the best. Through fun rhymes and illustrations, Dynomike: Talent Show Time shows kids that winning doesn’t mean you have to hurt the ones you care about.
