Stories of Music, Volume 2 by Holly E Tripp

The powerful effect of music on us is universally recognized, just a few notes from a certain peace can instantly evoke memories which transport us back to another time, event, or place.

Raised in a musical family, the author, Holly Tripp has fond memories of listening to her grandmother’s reminiscences of a childhood dancing to fiddlers’ music. However, it was the tragic death of her brother Brandon, and their shared love of music, which reawakened her love of song writing, and subsequently, the realization of the special place in our lives, and memories, certain pieces of music hold.

I thoroughly enjoyed the author’s first book, ‘Stories of Music’ Volume 1, and have been looking forward to Volume 2. As with its predecessor, this book enables you to, by visiting the free companion web edition, use the QR and short URLs throughout the book, to enjoy the original music and videos which accompany some of the stories.

The book is divided into sections, Origins, Interconnection, Exploration, Against All Odds, Transcendence, and Ghosts. The stories, poems, and essays within each section are personal accounts, from authors, and artists, throughout the world. All wanted to share with others how music has changed and affected their lives.

There are so many wonderful recollections to enjoy, however one I particularly like is called “The Magic of the Mouth.” In this story, newly arrived in Goa, India, Mukta Patil recalls being invited to a curtain raiser for World Mouth Harp Festival of India.
He recounts his confusion, as he imagines a full sized harp, and cannot see how one will fit in a mouth. However, as the story progresses all is revealed, and we learn about this fascinating musical instrument, thought to be one of the earliest known to man. There are wonderful pictures included, and the opportunity to listen to one being played by Neptune Chapotin.

They say that music breeches all boundaries and this book does just that, demonstrating clearly how music can inspire, create and heal. The icing on the cake for me, however are the QR’s and URL’s which provided me with the opportunity to enjoy the full sensory experience.

As a foot note I would like to add, that following through with her belief that music heals, the author is donating 10% of all of the proceeds to the non-profit organisations, Hungry for Music, and Music & Memory.

About the Author: Holly E. Tripp grew up in a musical household with musician parents and a passion to follow in their footsteps. These musical beginnings, and her love for storytelling, inspired her to create the “Stories of Music” series, with which she has set out to celebrate the ways in which music is changing lives around the world. These multimedia anthologies feature authors and artists from around the world and include poetry, essays, photography, original music, and videos. An emotionally impactful collection, these books are inspiring examples of the power of music and how it connects us all. Ten percent of book proceeds are being donated to nonprofit organizations which bring greater access to music: Hungry for Music and Music & Memory.

About the Book:Stories of Music, Volume 2 is the latest installment of the multimedia anthology series that focuses on the ways in which music impacts people’s lives. Featuring works by authors and artists from around the world, Volume 2 celebrates how music can propel us forward–despite obstacles, pain, and uncertainty–and in some cases, save lives.

You will meet a host of incredible people in these heartfelt stories–a man who survived the Holocaust because he was a talented violin player, a woman who learned to play the piano at age 91, the founder of the World Mouth Harp Festival of India, and many more. You will travel back in time to experience monumental moments in music history, and to present-day India, France, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Israel, Russia, Siberia, Morocco, and the United States, where you will discover stories from people who continue to live through music today.

Killing the Market: Legendary Investor Robert W. Wilson by Roemer McPhee

30226926

This book is about the life and 40 year career in the financial market of Robert W. Wilson.

Robert W. Wilson was an investor and philanthropist, a man driven to succeed. He made brave investments, followed his own council, and was filled with grit, and the determination. It is these qualities which have led him to be called the greatest investor of our time.

He starting out with $15,000 from his mother in 1958 and had the ethos that ‘[to be an investor], money has to be the most important thing in the world to you.’ Through clever investing and sheer hard work, using other people’s money, his fortune grew astronomically over the years, and just before his death in 2013 he had a net worth of $800 million.

This small book is packed with interesting information about the companies Robert W. Wilson was involved in, which include many of the giants such as Lockheed Aircraft Corporation, Atari, Compaq Computer Corp, Burroughs, Pizza Time Theater, American Airlines and Federal Express.

I also touches sensitively in his personal life and passions, such as the opera, and his interest in nature, wildlife and conservation, all of which he supported fervently.

He handled his affairs with control and dignity, and this included his suicide in 2013. He left a note saying “I had a rewarding life. Thank you and goodbye to all my friends. Please make sure you cancel all my plans. Tell everyone what I did. I’m not ashamed of killing myself. Sell all my stuff,” the note read, according to law-enforcement sources.”

The author of this short book has treated the reader to an in-depth look at the life of this amazing man, and what made him tick, it is interesting, inspirational and I highly recommend it.

About Roemer McPhee:

Roemer McPhee was born in Washington D.C. and resided there for several years while his father was special legal counsel to President Eisenhower. At age 17, he attended Princeton University, where he studied history, then turned to business school at Wharton, as he was always interested in money and investing. After working as a trader for Morgan Stanley for two years, he now works as a private investor and is very active in the futures market and cash markets. In his free time, McPhee likes to play squash and tennis, and enjoys cycling. He also loves to sail, and travel. Aside from his new book on Wilson, McPhee is the author of the book The Boomer’s Guide to Story: A Search for Insight in Literature and Film. McPhee is married and has one son. He lives in New York City.

About the book: Robert W. Wilson is the greatest investor of all time, on the only criterion that counts: percentage return on capital. What you make with what you have, what you started out with. Wilson would be the first to point out that there are investors richer than himself; but on a percentage-return basis, he is unmatched, and untouched. He received $15,000 from his mother in 1958, and he ran this stake to the fabulous sum of $230 million, by 1986. With assistance he himself sought out, he then nearly quadrupled his net worth to $800 million, by the year 2000. This return, after taxes no less, is more than 50,000 to one. More than 5,000,000 percent. Wilson did it in about forty years, without partners. How? How, possibly? This book, “Killing the Market,” tries to find, or at least get close to, an answer.
Robert Wilson quit the investing business in 1986, because he had “lost his touch,” as he said. The most productive of men, the hardest working of men, he started to move into philanthropy. Eventually he became just about the most important philanthropist in the United States. Of the $800 million he accumulated, he had given away fully $700 million of it at the time of his death, in 2013 (by his own hand). Movingly, Robert Wilson’s gifts were never to things that entertained him, or to pet projects; they were always to charities trying very hard to make the world a better place for everybody.

Unemployable! by David Thomas Roberts

image002

I was drawn to this book because of its title ‘Unemployable!’ I just love the title, as it was exactly what my now husband classified me as 10 years before we married when I was a self-employed mum working in his garden – and he was right I could never be employed by anyone else. I love the freedom too much!

I agree with everything that the author David Thomas Roberts has written. This book is absolutely packed with good advice. If you have the thirst to be your own boss then this is the book for you! It is practical, informative, down to earth and yet at the same time so inspirational.

This is not however a pie in the sky, opt out and follow your dream book, it is built on solid foundations and years of dedication to his businesses. The authors has experience both as a very successful man who made it (more than once), and, just as importantly as someone who looking back can see where, and why his businesses failed. These experiences have given him a real insight into what it REALLY takes to succeed.

Also, he doesn’t glaze over the not so pleasant parts like, finance, how important it is to be truthful to yourself as to whether you really are making money, relationships, partners and the tricky one of what to do when a family member wants to become part of your business.

David Thomas Roberts freely imparts his vast knowledge and anyone considering making themselves ‘unemployable’ would greatly benefit from taking heed his advice. Whether it is discovering if this sort of life and responsibilities are really right for you, or learning from his experiences with the tax man.

At one point in the book he reminisces about asking his respected father what he would have liked to do if he could have, and why he didn’t. Funnily enough, I asked the exact same question of my own father when he had ‘retired’ and started his own business, and got the exact same answer!

I cannot recommend this book highly enough, and am sure everyone who reads it will learn so much from its contents.

About the Author: David ThomasRoberts, known as the “Renegade Capitalist®”, is the founder and CEOof Teligistics, and is a bestselling author, public speaker and serialentrepreneur who, at the age of twenty-one, left the world of being employed bysomeone else for the rest of his life and became “UNEMPLOYABLE!” Robertsshares the lessons he’s learned from more than thirty-five years as anentrepreneur, the unconventional strategies he has deployed, and providesspecific how-to advice on starting a business and the secrets of beingsuccessfully independent – and sustaining it for the rest of your life.

About the Book: Roberts makes the case that this may be the greatest time in history to start a business! Using Roberts’ strategies and principles in this book, learn how to become “UNEMPLOYABLE!” your entire life! Most of us are taught to get a good education and a good job. The idea that we should be content to have someone else dictate our daily commute, our income, schedules and vacations is the accepted norm. To some, the idea of life in a cubicle eight hours a day is akin to torture! What does it really take for someone to jump off the employment treadmill and participate in the free enterprise system, unencumbered by traditionally accepted myths?

You Don’t Die – You Just Change Channels! by Chuck Swartwout

CoverYouDontDie1-16

I just loved this book, it is written in such a friendly chatty manner that it draws you in straight away. When I read in the introduction this 94 years young author saying “When I tell you that I am 94 years old, you may think that I’m either nuts or a dreamer to think that I can accomplish all that at an age where some people don’t want to commit themselves to buying green bananas.” I just knew it was going to be interesting.

Like most people, as a young person, Chuck Swartwout never considered growing old, however, years later after the loss of his much loved wife of 54 years, Gretchen, he found himself re-evaluating his life, questioning if his good luck at various times, was luck and not something else, and this fuelled his fascination in the afterlife. Thus began his quest for knowledge.

He has had an incredibly interesting life and career, and because of this, and his fascination in so many different things, the world we live in, the spirit world, religion, space, and everything in between, he decided to write this book. However, this is no ordinary book, the author doesn’t tell you what to do, how to think, and what is right. No, this is a ‘feedback book’ written to provide you with information, varied and unbiased, on space, the universe, the spirit world, mediums, religion, near death experiences, after death communication, the future, God, and so much more. Chuck Swartwout wants to hear from you when you have read it, he cares what you think. He wants to hear your thoughts on the subjects he has brought up. He personally believes there is an afterlife, but he wants to hear what you think about the subject. Why, because he plans to write at least one more book and wants more information, this man has a real thirst for knowledge, one I have never seen paralleled.

I am interested in near death experiences, after death communication and the spirit world, and my husband has a deep love of science and space, all through this book, I found myself reading passages out to him, I couldn’t help myself.

Chuck Swartwout strongly believes that we must end all wars and that communication is the key. Included in the books is a lovely letter from one of his granddaughters who is in the Peace Corp in Peru, in which she clearly illustrates how the differences portrayed in the various parts of the world, be it everyday tasks, or pleasures, such as dancing, are not different, they are just other way of doing the same thing. Communication is key, whether in this world or the next.

The author believes that this is so important that not only does he want to write more books, he is also looking for billionaire sponsors for a new project he is proposing. This project is about communication with the spirit world, and has the tentative name Spirit Lab. You can read more in Appendix 1.

The front cover picture is a copy of an original watercolour by his beloved wife of 54 years Gretchen, whom he firmly believes he will be reunited with in the future. Reading this book has opened my eyes to many things and taught me so much, I hope his belief that they will be reunited is true and look forward to reading the sequel.

About the Book: When Gretchen Swartwout died suddenly in 2006, Her husband of 54 years, Chuck, was not quite ready to call it quits. He combined his deep Christian faith with his decades of experience as an engineer and creative problem solver to produce this “common sense” analytical exploration of the idea of heaven and a life a er death. From interpreting scripture to testing the work of “mediums,” this book explores the afterlife in a way it’s never been done before.

Winter’s Mystery: Time to Go Within by Patricia R. Blumhagen

51qrmuRp3-L__SX342_BO1,204,203,200_

This is definitely the most powerful, inspiring and amazing poetry book I have ever read.

In Winter’s Mystery: Time To Go Within, the author, Patricia Blumhagen writes in a very powerful yet open way. I loved the title, since, loving nature myself I could immediately connect to the fact that in winter everything is exposed in its raw detail. Gone are the flowers which distract, the leaves which hide, in winter there is only what is…

The author has a lovely way of exploring the frailties and strengths of humanity. Her poetry is simply beautiful, looking at the myriad of emotions which make us who we are, our hopes, fears, dreams etc., opening them up for us in an amazing way and exposing the nucleus for us to consider.
That she is an Interfaith Minister is not really surprising, she has a wonderful way with words and I loved the strength of belief which is shown in the poem ‘Calling.’

There are many inspirational poems and one, which I loved was The Vessel which tells of being broken, yet still there lies the possibility of healing.

In this busy world there are many people who will criticise you, but sometimes you can be your strongest critic and this can cause a lot of emotional pain, and lead to self-destruction; the poem the ‘Inner Critic’ inspires you to let go of these thoughts.

‘I Let Go’ is a short, yet very powerful poem about coming to terms with loss which is just simply beautiful.

However, I have to say that my favourite is Open the Door’ which is about facing your demons and gaining inner peace, something, many people lack the strength to do.

Simply, this book is a joy to read and to own, I know that I shall pick it up many times from now on, whether to gain inspiration, search for answers, or just to enjoy the wonderful words within.

About the Author: Patricia is an Interfaith Minister, Registered Nurse, and Certified Nutritional Consultant, as well as a grower of organic herbs. As an Interfaith Minister and Spiritual Coach, her concern is finding the best approach to assist clients in connecting with their souls and in birthing their hidden potentials. She works with healing the trauma of loss. Many have been touched and healed by reading her book. She also offers transforming rituals for celebrating personal growth. For twenty-one years she lived and serviced as a nun in a Catholic Community, out growing the conditioning she found herself outside of the religious organization, and, began her search to release the old and reclaim her authentic self.

Winter’s Mystery-Time To Go Within:Spiritual Journeying is her poetic memoir. Here, she tells
her story from loss to freedom, and finding purpose and meaning in writing. In her poetic memoir
she shows how the emotional pain was the medicine for her healing towards wholeness.
Her book is the spiritual journey within for honoring the darkness and moving towards new beginnings.

Mini Farming: Sustainability with A Backyard Farm (Slef sufficiency, Sustainable farming, self sufficiency living Book 1) by Rodger Kinnard

51+OzhHl+QL__AA160_

We actually have a smallholding, and once you have made the jump to living this sort of life, have an active vegetable patch, and a few animals, you never look back!

It starts quite sensibly by looking at backyard farming, what it entails, how much room you will need, and how much you actually have. The author then goes into what you would like to do, and, if you live in a built up area, what you might have to check on before you begin.

All types and sizes of gardens are discussed, from large plots to patio and vertical planting, there’s something in it for everyone. It then goes on in this section to discuss some of the crops, both vegetable and fruit, that you may wish to grow, and their storage. Garden maintenance and pests are also brought up, before we move to the next section, farm animals.

Animals and birds add a whole new dimension to your project, and naturally the first ones which are mentioned are the ever popular chickens, quail, ducks and geese. The author then goes on to goats, sheep, and pigs.

All this produce has to be preserved, for use out of season and this is covered too.

At the end there is a sample year in the life of a mini farmer to give a taste of how the seasons go, for those who have no experience.
Overall a very interesting and informative guide which broadly covers a wide range of farming options.

About the Book: Sustaining your family the healthy way: Organic farming in a small space!

In today’s economy, there are ways not only to save money, but to create healthy eating choices, by using whatever space you have available to grow your own food. Organic gardening is booming. Even with a backyard, you can prepare, plant, nurture and harvest a natural garden which will produce organic vegetables and fruit; so much better than buying from the store! The book explores egg and meat sources too, and offers suggestions to use vertical as well as horizontal gardens in the process.
With helpful instructions, plans and guidance for obtaining permits, building coops, and other structures, the book will help you also deal with garden enemies such as grubs, insects, and disease.

Creating a sustainable life for your family can be a pleasure for all of the family. These gardening ideas not only help you to create your own mini-farm, but can be fun for all the family too! Activity levels increase and you’ll experience a deeper interaction with nature, as well as knowing the source of your own food! The results just speak for themselves.

I have tried to make this book as detailed as possible to help you get started with organic life style. Here is some of what you will learn inside the book:

* The planning stages in order to start a Mini Farm
* What are different types of Gardens that you can start setting up?
* Maintaining your garden and pest control measures
* Sourcing of eggs and white meat; different options explained
* Self-preservations and the a year in life
Everything else you would need to know before starting your Mini Farm

Overall experience of growing your own organic food is wonderful not only just for your health but also for your brain. You wouldn’t need your gym membership if you start your farm workout. You can trust me on that.

“Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.” – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Naked in the Wind: Chemo, hairloss and deceit by Shirley Ledlie

51bvJKDwfGL__AA160_The big C is a word which strikes fear into the heart of everyone.

In this amazing story, not only does the author tell her readers of her very personal fight against breast cancer, but also the effects of the cocktail of chemotherapy drugs she was prescribed to cure it.

When ill, we are vulnerable, we trust those who are treating us, and Shirley was no different. However, when these people let us down not many people a brave enough to stand up against them like Shirley Ledlie. Her treatment left her with permanent hair loss, something which may have been avoided if the powers that be had done their research more thoroughly.

This story is hear rending at times, inspiring and honest, as she bravely chronicles her battle with French bureaucracy and a French drug company.

This is an amazing story, which I read in one sitting.

I applaud the author for writing it.

About the Author: Shirley Ledlie was born in 1958, in Nottingham, England. She is a mum of two and wife to John. Her first success in writing, was at the age of 10 after winning first prize for her entry about the delicious subject of the cocoa-bean. She still loves chocolate…

Shirley wrote a weekly column for the ‘Bella’ magazine in the UK. This continued for a year, during which time she built up a large fan base.

Naked in the Wind is her first book, a memoir she felt compelled to write after experiencing a little known adverse side-effect from her chemotherapy treatment for breast cancer. This is not a ‘cancer story’ as such but how she battles with doctors and takes on ‘big Pharma’ in her fight to discover the truth.

Her second book, is a short, light hearted travelogue titled The Unexpected Pilgrim – four days in Israel. She had a surprise offer to visit Israel and quickly fell in love with this captivating land.

Shirley is currently working on her first novel and writing a fortnightly article for an online lifestyle magazine.

About the Book: A seven year journey that starts AFTER the cancer treatment ends. There are no needles, biopsies or anti-sickness drugs.

This memoir is about the lies, betrayal and the dirty little secret she had unwillingly become part of. Not just her but hundreds of women all over the world – and it still goes on today. Whistle blowers, irrational behaviour and some madness- it is all here. Humorous and inspiring, in parts, and desperate in others.

10 Stacks To Success: How to Achieve Success One Goal at a Time by Jerome Jay Isip

untitledMotivational and Inspiring.

Well if you’re wanting to become successful and looking for the way how, then I can’t think of anything better than this book.

Jerome “Jay” Isip is the author, and he gives the reader in this eye opening book, not only the tools to succeed in business and life, but also delivers a short sharp wakeup call to those who think that they might have already been trying.

I really loved this book because it is written from ‘real life’ experience, it doesn’t assume that the reader wants to spend hours at university or already has a degree. Neither does it suggest in any way the fact that it is necessary to have done both these things to get anywhere in life – how refreshing in this day and age! In his defence, I have to say, right here and now that the author does not criticize those who go down this path and acknowledges that for some professions these qualifications are necessary; however, this book looks at the opportunities there are for people who could not, or have not, either by choice or circumstance followed this path and yet still want to succeed.

In this very frank and straight talking book, the author uses his life, in many ways as an example of what not to do, and then shares with the readers how he managed to change the situations he found himself in, turning negatives into positives. A very important part of this book, is that he explains to the reader how to develop and use a PMA (Positive Mental Attitude), and how with the use of positive affirmation it is possible to literally change your life. With a positive mental attitude nothing is impossible, and if you embrace the concept of positive affirmation you can feel invincible.

The really empowering thing about reading this book is, that he explains how your life and your ability to succeed is entirely in your hands, no-one else’s yours. All the way through you are given examples and encouraged to look inside yourself to succeed. Written with a no holds barred and a brutally honest attitude, the author enables you to see that any hurdles in your way are yours of the making, and brushes away any excuses you may feel like giving.

If you want to succeed in a career and/or your personal life this book is ideal for self-motivation. Written from first-hand experience, this is the most inspirational book I have ever read. The author’s ability to inspire is amazing, and as soon as I started it I could feel myself becoming empowered by his words.

10 Stacks To Success is this generation’s guide to understanding that there are no limits,” explains Isip. “Unleashing the power of your own creativity can be a challenge. But there is nothing more rewarding that rediscovering all of the potential you have had inside of you the whole time. More confidence, more understanding and more freedom than ever are yours for the taking. My book is the starting point for the lifestyle of your dreams.”
Isip says his book is especially important for people who are stuck in neutral and need inspiration and direction to discover their unique purpose in life.
Amazon Top 50 Reviewer Grady Harp says of 10 Stacks To Success that “He challenges us in a very positive but stern manner, inserts enough bawdy humor to keeps us turning the pages, and in the end makes us realize that Jay Isip really cares that we become what our potential suggests.”

How to write a novel in 90 days

A useful guide.

This book is written by a successful and prolific author who has used his experiences in an invaluable way, to produce a very good guide for authors.

Whether you do write your book in 90 days or not, this book offers sound information and guidelines on many points.
The author started his career having to juggle a ‘day’ job with his writing, and so he fully understands the pressures writers are put under both personally, by others, and situations around them.

As well as the expected advice on the importance of doing your homework, building characters, word counts and targets, the book is full of good ideas to improve your writing. The author has included some really good examples of how, by making changes to your writing style, you can make the same story scene much more interesting, and how to increase the sales and marketing opportunities by adding ‘hooks,’ which link the book to specific places etc.

His repetition of the importance of rewriting may sound a bit daunting, however, anyone who has written a book knows that this becomes second nature after a while.

No-one can guarantee that you write a best seller, the original ideas have to come from you, however, the amount of advice given in this book is phenomenal, and it is given in a no nonsense style.

Rendered unemployed on a beach in Clearwater, Florida, he decided to begin his first book, Soft Target. He never stopped writing after that.
He has reached over 200,000 downloads of his thriller novels and has had 7 books on the top 100 kindle charts, 3 number ones and an Amazon clicks Reader’s book of the month award.
