The Starlight Club 12: The Golden Spike Casino by Joe Corso

Double dealings and danger in gangland Queens.

For those lovers of gangster stories set in the early 1960’s New York, where tough men played for high stakes and the old values still held high, then there doesn’t get better than the Starlight Club series.

Set in Queens, the stories are told by Bobby, who now lives with his daughter Lynn. He may be aging, but the good old days are still clear memories, and she loves to hear his stories. Big Red Fortunato is the owner of the famous Starlight Club and the boss. With his captains Trenchie, and Tarzan, and their loyal employees, this is their territory and only the foolish go up against them.

However, there are always fools who think they can take over, or dupe the boss, and sometimes they have to learn the hard way…

This is the case in this exciting story where a gang of young thugs think they can disrupt the status quo in Queens, and learn very quickly that vandalizing vending and slot machines on Red’s turf is a BAD idea. However Red knows they’re not the brains behind the petty behaviour and, there’s more to it than meets the eye. It doesn’t take much leaning on them to turn them into quivering wrecks who are only too keen to rat on the person whose put them in the situation. However, when they spill the beans, Red quickly realises that their contact is only small fry too, one in a chain. Deeper investigations reveal that there’s a take-over plan is being hatched by someone further afield with grandiose ideas.

Indeed, Haiti is a long way away from Queens, there Bernard Levey is safe, scheming with the islands voodoo dictator Poppa Doc. However when Levey steps onto Red’s home turf he discovers he has not only Red to answer to, but there is also a little matter to be dealt with concerning millions which went missing in his other life, a time when he was known as Ira Goldblum.

It’s action at every turn, and as this story evolves, the plots cascade into each other. The author, Joe Corso’s fans already know the wonderful tales he can tell through Bobby, however, it’s not just the storylines and fantastic plots which make this author’s stories shine out from the crowd, it’s his characters. Through his writing readers get a real insight into the close knit community which is the gangland mobs, their loyalties, their taboos and the mind-set of these men who will take a bullet if necessary for what they believe in.

+6

Whether you read the Starlight Club stories as they are published, or pick them to read randomly, it doesn’t matter. The characters, the settings, and the action make this series one every fan of crime, adventure and gangland dealings will love.

This entertaining thriller features an improbable hero, Lom, a 72-year-old Korean war veteran who’s still a crack shot. He quickly sets out to save Toby, the king of a fictitious country who’s hiding out in Lom’s favorite diner after dodging an attempted assassination on a New York City street. Narrator Al Benelli portrays the male characters in this slightly wacky story with verve and a spirit of adventure. He sets the stage for Lom’s adventures with a fluid delivery and excellent pacing. Further, his interpretations intensify the political machinations and international chicanery in the king’s fictitious country. He intensifies the brutality of the mobster and his hired killers and sounds fittingly concerned as Lom’s girlfriend, Martha. Overall, Benelli presents completely entertaining audio. S.C.A. About the Book:

Meyer Lansky, famous crime boss, has to leave his beautiful luxury hotel, Habana Riviera in a hurry when government unrest causes upheaval in Cuba. In the confusion of exiting the country, one of Meyer’s trusted associates, Ira Goldbaum, steals millions of dollars of Meyer’s money and hastily leaves the country. Meyer vows to get even and to recover his money, but when his closest friend Charlie “Lucky” Luciano dies, he has no one to trust to help him find Ira and get back what is rightfully his. Then he remembers Big Red Fortunato, a powerful mob boss who is not connected to the corruption of the conglomerate Meyer has been instrumental in creating.
Red is glad to help Meyer, putting their past differences aside, but he has a laundry list of other pressing issues that are part of being a crime boss. Besides entertaining Meyer Lansky, there are a group of young punks busting up slot machines and jukeboxes that Red owns, he has company from Las Vegas, and his wife called, hinting at trouble at his movie studios in Los Angeles. Red feels pushed and pulled from coast to coast as the thought occurs to him: Can all of these problems be connected in some way?
This is the twelfth explosive installment in the award-winning Starlight Club series by Joe Corso, following the adventures of Big Red Fortunato and his cohort of colorful characters.

Odell’s Fall by Norman Bacal

An action-packed legal thriller dripping with intrigue and deceit.

As soon as I opened the first page of this exciting legal thriller I knew I wouldn’t be able to put it down. Straight away the lead character Odell Moore’s incredible presence and power as one of New York’s most successful lawyers captured my attention. Little did I realise that underneath the formidable, confident, presence which is Odell’s face to the world, lies a much more complex character, one which continues to unravel and offer new surprises right until the very last page.

The story begins with a celebration, it’s champagne all around as the lawyers at the prestigious international firm TGO congratulate themselves on having won the “Bounty” deal, and as their leader Odell Moore, affectionately known as The General, must celebrate this a major victory with them.

However today Odell’s mind is elsewhere, it is with his new wife, beautiful southern belle Dee. The couple have just returned from their secret wedding in Vegas and Dee is on her way to break the news of their marriage to her parents. How will her mother react, and what impact will their marriage have on her father, a deeply racist Alabama senator, when he learns her new husband is an African American?

Odell’s rise to the top of his profession has been achieved by sheer determination and he has fought for recognition and respect every step of the way. This is the way it is if you want to succeed in this business, in a profession which is ruthless, cut throat even. However, Odell is not the only one fired with a deep hunger and ambition. Jackson Sherman, Odell’s young underling, is hungry for success, sure of his own potential and unwilling to let anything get in his way. His rise through the ranks at TGO seems destined to succeed, but will it? When the seeds of doubt are planted in Jackson’s mind he discovers his darker side, a side which will stop at nothing in order to succeed.

The author’s best-selling first book “Breakdown” told the story of the rise and fall of the iconic Canadian law firm Heenan Blaikie, and in this his first work of fiction he uses his vast experience in the world of law to treat his readers into a glimpse of what life is really like for these high achievers, the glitzy and glamor, the toll on relationships, and what really happens in their lives both inside and outside the boardroom.

This story is a modern day take on Shakespeare’s famous tragedy Othello, and Odell like Othello  is soon to learn that you can trust no-one, and when you are sitting high up on your pedestal, there are plenty of people who are watching, and waiting for you to fall.

I just loved this exciting fast-paced thriller. Right from the first page there’s a wonderful mix of excitement, revelation and expectation as the plot evolves and new discoveries about the characters are made. Highly recommended!

THE STARLIGHT CLUB 9: UNA MORTE FACILE (AN EASY DEATH) by Joe Corso

When Sicily arrives on the streets of Queens…

What daughter doesn’t love listening to her father’s stories, and this exciting new Starlight Club adventure opens with Lynn, devoted daughter of Bobby, waiting for her father to return from a visit to Queens, where he hopes to see some old friends.

When he arrives safely home they settle down with a coffee and some Sambuca, and Bobby tells Lynn of his day, and how it had bought back memories of a troubling period in 1975 when the Sicilians had arrived in Queens and set up in business selling drugs.

You see, Big Red Fortunato, owner of the Starlight Club, despite having his fingers in many pies did not condone drugs and prostitution on the streets of Queens. So when the word got back to him that the Zips were peddling drugs, he wasted no time in sending out his men to get more information, and after a ‘meeting’ with the Sicilians, he eventually discovered who the leader of the cartel was.

Determined to keep drugs of his streets, and with a fortuitous legitimate excuse for visiting Sicily, Red, Tarzan and Trenchie set off to meet Antonio Andolino, the person responsible for sending the Zips over, and the leader of one of the largest drug cartels in the world.

Used to being feared, Antonio has never met the likes of Red before and as the meeting deteriorates it is clear that the problem is not going to be solved simply.

In this powerful, exciting story we follow Red and his gang as they travel between Queens and Sicily, and very early on find ourselves fascinatingly ensconced in the world of the Sicilian mafia, with their proud honour, sense of family, blood oaths, and revenge killings.

This enthralling story brings together many of the past very memorable characters in the Starlight Club books, and if you are a fan, like me your will quickly remember them like old friends, however if this is the first book in the series you have read, it doesn’t matter, as everything is wonderfully explained and you will find yourself sinking into this excellent plot and its larger than life personalities with ease.

The author has managed through his amazing storytelling to bring the streets of Queens and the atmosphere of Sicily magically to life, in weaving together a clever story which includes drama, murder, mayhem, and kidnapping.

A really gripping thriller, reading The Starlight Club, An Easy Death, with its twist and turns, will keep you riveted to the page, and keen to know what will happen next, I highly recommend it.

Go figure… If I would have known I could tell a good story. I would have started writing a half century ago.

About the Book:

The powerful mob leader knew that selling drugs brings heat. Local and federal heat. It’s 1974 and Big Red Fortunato’s order that no drugs are to be sold in Queens has been broken. He discovers that the powerful Sicilian mafia has defied his rule and is selling drugs with utter disregard for who he is. Red has to stop them without starting a war he may not win.

Tarzan’s recently deceased father bequeathed his house to him, but upon visiting it Tarzan discovers squatters living in it… and they refuse to leave.

Red visits Sicily under the pretext of scouting for movie locations. He arranges a meeting with Antonio Andolino the man in charge of the burgeoning Sicilian drug trade, with the hope of convincing him not to ship drugs to Queens. To hedge their bets in case the talks fail, Sicilian mobsters kidnap two of Red’s valuable assets to use as leverage against him. Red has to figure out how to get them back unharmed.

The Retribution by Shankar Kashyap

A thrilling psychological thriller.

Everyone has seen them, the drug addicts, gays, and drunkards, the dregs of society willing to do anything for their next fix, however, the attractions of these vices are rampant in all tiers of society, and every ‘job’ has its fair share of culprits, it’s just that some people manage to hide under a polished veneer of respectability, whilst others do so with only a small degree of success.

In this exciting psychological thriller a family from Kenya find themselves fleeing to Leicester in the UK. The differences between the two countries are so vast that it takes the main character a boy called Dev a long time to settle, however Dev’s father is determined to make the move to the UK a success, and so the unhappy Dev resorts to telling the pages of his little red book how he feels, a childhood habit which follows him through life.

As the years go by the father’s dream is realised as he establishes a temple, and he is proud of the prominent part his boys play in the day to day life there.

Dev is no longer the withdrawn boy of his youth, he has matured into a charismatic, dynamic man, a priest in the temple, loved by all. He works tirelessly for the rights of those around him, and it is this compassion and strength of character which makes him adored by the both the Asian, and local white community, people and leaders alike.

However Dev is hiding a dark secret from everyone, despite all the trappings of a successful man, a beautiful wife, new cars, designer clothes, he knows in his heart that he cannot deny the man he really is, the man who has grown from that young boy who left Mombasa Island all those years ago…

As the author takes us, through Dev’s experiences, deeper and deeper into the gay and drugs scenes in the seedier side of Leicester, we discover the other world which lives and loves in the shadows, the mafia who supply them, and how even the police officers working their cases have their own demons to face.

I found that this exciting, traumatic, and sometimes thought provoking story had me turning the pages eagerly, desperate to discover what happens next. Full of action from page one, I think that other readers who love a good psychological, murder mystery will absolutely love this engrossing story, after all, admit it, aren’t you just itching to know what Dev wrote in the pages of that little red book?

About the Book:

A psychological thriller of Dev Sharma, a good man, a ‘flamboyant’ priest with high profile and owner of a reputable Care Home, is brutally murdered. His murder brings the detective Sean O’Connor, a police inspector transferred from Ulster Constabulary, more bad than good, tries to make sense of the case whilst hiding his own double life as a serial womanizer and drug abuser. The question is whether the murder is of someone pious and holy and a pillar of society. Or is it a catharsis of a society gone bad? The answer is not so simple when the man accused of killing him turns out to be one of the dregs of society. The complexity lies in his separation of two lives but his own psychological reasoning, that he, as formed by his gods is required to practice a darker secret life of bisexuality, rent boys, and extreme behavior. The priest is seen battling with his choices and fears of disrepute. Yet at the same time attempting to justify his behavior to himself as unchangeable, a fall out of modern living. Sheena Achar is a sophisticated wife of the Priest, deep and unfathomable. She portrays the face of a devoted wife and a lover to the society. Does she have a different agenda? As the story unfolds, O’Connor is faced with mounting evidence against a homophobic group, a drug mafia, jealous boyfriend, a jealous wife, a drug addict and a rent boy. But only one of them is the real killer.

The Pursuit of Happiness by Alan Trustman

An action packed crime thriller.

It wasn’t until the author of this exciting new crime thriller, Alan Trustman, retired from being a partner in a successful law firm, that he began a new career as a film writer. He wrote the screen plays for the films, Bullitt, The Thomas Crown Affair, They Call Me Mr. Tibbs, The Next Man, and Le Mans.

The main character in this story is a tough guy from Brooklyn, a ruthless killer, dangerous, deadly, and yet still a man, and, as we discover not totally impervious to womanly wiles. However, in essence, this story is an action packed crime thriller from the very first page.

Imagine, if you can, dipping into the ultra-spy world Ian Fleming’s, James Bond, then add the mystery and attention to details of Clive Cussler’s action adventures, and you will just begin to have some idea of how absolutely enthralling this story is. If you love books in which you get so absorbed that you find yourself compulsively turning each page craving to know what happens next, with nail biting twists and turns, then you will love The Pursuit of Happiness.

The author’s incredible attention throughout the plot to the details regarding the history, geography, locations, characters, and weaponry used, all add immeasurably to the readers’ enjoyment of this story.

From the moment I picked up this book I enjoyed every page, and I for one, hope that there is a sequel.

About the Book: A bad boy from Boston seeks fulfillment.

Incognito by Khaled Talib

A fantastic Spy Thriller.

Khaled Talib is set to take the literary world by storm with this, his latest spy thriller, Incognito.

When Pope Gregoire XVII disappears, and no one claims to have any idea where he could be, speculation as to his whereabouts, safety, and fate escalate, and soon the frantic search to find him spreads from Italy to further afield.

As the tension mounts, The League of Invisible Knights, send Ayden Tanner, an ‘officially dead’ former member of the British SAS, and his team, to find him. However as soon as Ayden arrives in Geneva for his meeting with the Papacy’s Press Secretary Rafael Rabolini, the problems begin…

This is a truly gripping read with a nail biting good vs. evil plot. Khalid Talib in his own vividly descriptive way, takes his readers on a worldwide adventure as Ayden and his team find themselves pitting their wit against a merciless enemy with a devastating plan…

Well written, with amazing characters and an action packed plot, this story will keep its reader on the edge of their seats until the very last page.

I was given a copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.

About the Author: Khaled is a former journalist with local and international exposure. His articles have been published and syndicated to newspapers worldwide, and his short stories have appeared in literary journals and magazines. The author is a member of the UK Crime Writers Association and the International Thriller Writers.

About the Book: Pope Gregoire XVII was last seen waving to the crowd at Saint Peter’s square from the famous Apostolic Palace window. Despite several layers of tight security, neither the Gendarmerie nor The Entity (the Vatican’s secret service) or the Swiss Guards claim to know anything about his sudden mysterious disappearance.

As the world mourns for the pope, a frantic search begins in Italy and beyond its borders amid speculation that the Holy See may know more than they are telling.

Ayden Tanner, a former British SAS commando officer — who is officially dead — is dispatched with two other crew members to find the Supreme Pontiff by The League of Invisible Knights, a covert division of Anonymous that aims to bring about the triumph of good over evil.

A secret arrangement is made for Ayden to meet Rafael Rabolini, the Papacy’s press secretary, in Geneva, who might be able to tell him more. But trouble unexpectedly starts from the moment Ayden arrives in the city that winter day…

The story unfolds to reveal an insidious plot by Willem Van Der Haas, a ruthless Dutch senator who has aligned himself with a world power bent on its own global ambitions.

In a gasping chase that races from the snowy mountains of Switzerland to the secret passages under Saint Peter’s Basilica to the hilly terrains of Istanbul to the harsh desert air of Egypt, Ayden and his crew are forced to match wits with lethal assassins as they struggle on a desperate quest to prevent a terrifying tomorrow.
