Review by Susan Keefe

Detective Max Larkin has just returned to work in the Rockton Police Department after being suspended for withholding information, following his solving of the ‘Time Killer’ murders with his partner Jesse.

Straight away, Captain Perry has another case for the partners to solve. Professor Lawrence Finestein has been found dead, under unusual circumstances. As the detectives’ try to discover a motive, who was responsible, and what made the killer brand his victim, the need for answers becomes more urgent as other victims start to appear, each with the same calling card.

Unfortunately, Max and Jesse just do not seem to be able to agree when the killer is caught and soon a rift appears, one which must be healed for the sake of everybody. As the tension mounts, new discoveries are made and it’s time for Max and Jesse put their differences aside and work together.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this fast moving crime thriller. Right from page one it is action packed, with plenty of twists and turns, and a storyline, which keeps the reader guessing, right until the end.

An excellent second story in the Max Larkin Detective series, I look forward to reading more.

The Starlight Club 4 by Joe Corso

The beautiful and the dangerous.

It’s Thanksgiving, a great time for family and yet again we are transported back in time to 1962 by Bobby Valentine as he relaxes after dinner and settles down to tell his daughter Lynn a bit more about what life was like way back then.

Despite popular belief, Red Fortunato is not dead, he has survived, and what’s more, he’s determined to rebuild The Starlight Club and have Frank Sinatra perform there on opening night.

He’s a man used to giving orders and being in control, however, even he is surprises when he attends a business meeting and finds himself with Marilyn Munro in his arms.

This action packed story is full of sex and corruption, set in the dark world of politics with the writer throwing a new light on Marilyn’s death, the political intrigue surrounding Jackie and Bobby Kennedy and suggest there was a potential threat on Richard Nixon’s life.

I thoroughly enjoyed this excellent story, which contains many of the familiar, if not lovable characters, from the Starlight Club series.

Colorado Mandala by Brian Heffron

Now available at Barnes & Noble – A story of love, friendship, and loyalty set in 1970’s Colorado.

Paul is our narrator as we find ourselves stepping into the lives of two very different men, who are best of friends, our narrator, and Michael, an ex-Vietnam veteran.

The men are in business together cutting and selling rare gems. They live life to the full together with Michael’s girlfriend, Sarah, her son Stuart and their dog.

The writer sets the scenes wonderfully at the beginning of each chapter and the reader is drawn into Colorado life at this time, the characters are so real and descriptions of events and places so vivid, if you close your eyes you could almost be there!

But even in the freedom loving 70’s some things cannot ultimately be shared, and feelings cannot always be controlled. Their lives unfold before us, emotions laid bare.

Then Paul discovers Michael is keeping a deep secret, kept since his time in Nam, which if told, would change everything.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, it has a brilliant story line, which could easily be continued, and as a woman, I especially liked the way it has been told from a man’s perspective.

Hershey the Cat is sad, horrible recurring nightmares haunt his sleep and all his authority has gone, all because of a silly incident with some annoying birds. What’s more, his life is changing and he has no control over it. He’s not sure what’s happening, but one thing he does know is that he’s not a happy cat!

After their summer in San Diego, Robby and his flock are deciding where to go next. Some of the flock decide to stay put, but the others are undecided. In the end, they decide to go to Las Vegas where apparently you can see many replicas of the wonders of the world in one place. The next day they set off.

Two trips made at the same time, one by a cat haunted by memories, the other by a flock of birds. What are the chances of them meeting? And, if by chance they did, what might happen?

Finally arriving in Las Vegas the flock make friends with some very unusual coloured birds and have the time of their life, visiting all the famous sights.

Meanwhile, Hershey finally arrives at his new destination and has an amazing surprise.

What will the future hold for Robby and his flock?

You’ll have to read the book to find out!

I loved having the opportunity to follow Robby’s adventures with Hershey, and could not help but admire the beautiful illustrations by the very talented Daniela Frongia.

What if a cat or dog ran for the Presidency of the U.S.A, whom would you choose?

In this engaging book, children will discover what the cats and dogs campaigns might be like, by considering the differences between the two types of animals.

The author has managed in a humorous and fun way to explain to children, how the candidates in an election can both be very popular and each have their own strong points, but who the ideal one is depends on your personal preference.

Children will have great fun reading this lovely story, which is beautifully illustrated.

A recent widower, Austin P.D. Detective Jason Scarsdale is battling with personal grief and learning how to cope bringing up his young daughter Shannon alone.

When Jason and his partner Sean Harris are instructed to investigate a case of child molestation, little do they realise where their enquiries will lead, or how far its tentacles’ will reach.

Things seem a little brighter when Jason strikes up a friendship with co-worker Dani Mueller, but little does he know that she has her own dark secrets, which will affect his life more than he could ever have imagined.

The insights into how police and law departments work, which this experienced author can give, makes this book a brilliant crime thriller.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this cleverly written, detailed and captivating story, which kept me guessing throughout with its twists and turns.

Southern Adventures by Tracy Kauffman

A lovely, thought provoking story.

Southern Adventures

Photo’s can be very thought provoking. For the viewer they have the power to bringing back memories, of all kinds.

The book opens with Kay looking through her old photo albums, recalling her memories.

She starts with her earliest, her childhood in Harvest, Alabama and the happy times she shares with her sisters and family. However as the book progresses we learn of places she visits, her highs and lows, her loves, and the tragedies of those around her.

The reader watches her transformation until, as the book draws to a close, she looks back, reflecting over all her achievements, wishes, prayers and dreams, and finishes with words of wisdom.

This is a lovely gentle story of one girls life in Alabama and other places, very personal and with an important message at the end.
