Coming Soon – The Staircase of Fire by Ben Woodard

Can Tom overcome his secret demons, and use his strength to help others?

In writing this exciting adventure story, the author takes his reader back to Kentucky in 1923, a time when racial prejudice was rampant and the Ku Klux Klan were very much at large…

The main character in the story is a fourteen year old boy called Tom. He lives in Shakertown in Mercer County with his granddad, and is an orphan. The tragedies of his life so far, and the memories associated with this have left his mind tortured with guilt and regret. Tom is an Irish catholic and as such is subject to some of the racial hatred which is so apparent against the Negro’s in his town. Perhaps this is why he feels so sorry for the way Rose and her son James are treated when they go to the courthouse to enrol to vote. Rose knows she has the right to vote using the 19th Amendment, however not in Shakertown, here Negro’s are not yet equal to white folk. Watching the mother and son being ridiculed and taken back to their wagon by the town’s deputies, and not helping them, makes the guilt burns deep into Tom’s soul, he is so ashamed of his cowardliness. This shame turns to absolute horror when days later he is waiting to say goodbye to Rose and James as they head off for a new life elsewhere. Instead of escaping the hate, he witnesses a horrific incident which they are subject to, and the memory of it changes his life forever!

He is just starting high school, and life must go on. The only way he can cope is to supress what he witnessed, and being your typical young lad he has a mind full of girls, and football. However the recent guilt and past memories remain in the back of his mind and haunt his dreams. He knows he must find the legendary Shaker gold, hidden somewhere in the town during the Civil War, and escape the town forever. But can escaping a place mean you can escape the memories too?

Fired with determination, and with the help of his cousin Will, Tom begins his search to find the map to the treasure, but it was hidden so long ago and so much has changed since then. Will the boys find the treasure?

If they do, will the money be answer to everything, or will it bring its own demons, after all money is sometimes known to be the route of all evil.

So many questions, and the answers can be found in this exciting rollercoaster of an adventure. Through Tom, his friends, family and the townsfolk we discover what life was really like during this period of time for people of color in America.

An inspiring adventure where the reader discovers that strength of character, the belief in what is right, and facing your demons, is the only answer to true inner peace – Highly recommended.

Audiobook – My Good Life in France In Pursuit of the Rural Dream by Janine Marsh

A thoroughly entertaining audiobook written by Janine Marsh and narrated by Esther Wane.

In this totally captivating audiobook we discover that people really do buy a house in another country on impulse. In fact, the author Janine Marsh did just that on a wet and windy February cross channel day out with her husband Mark, and Dad.

Townies Janine and Mark threw caution to the wind, and jumped in with both feet, buying and renovating a run-down French farmhouse. So what made these sensible people with their feet firmly on career paths do such a rash thing? Well, quite simply it was the love of France and everything (well almost) French.

I am an expat but even if you are not, I am sure, you will like me fall in love with the North of France, the Seven Valleys region, its coastline, seaside and country villages, the gastronomy, its people and so much more.  This story isn’t just a wonderful way to enjoy experiencing someone else’s life in another country, it is a way to get a real feel for what living in France is really like – warts and all.

It is amazing also to listen about the transformations which can easily happen to someone when they go to live in another country, the new skills we discover, and how anything seems possible.

Throughout this audiobook there is plenty of information about, food, history, renovation, quirky sayings, and not least the enormous differences between our two cultures, even though we are only separated by the English Channel.

The narrator, Ester Wane wonderfully tells this story, so whether you are looking for a highly entertaining story to listen to, considering moving to France and want to know what really motivates anyone to give up a successful career and life in the UK to make the move, or are going on holiday to France and would like a little insider information, this is the audiobook for you!

About the Author:

Janine Marsh lives in northern France with her husband and myriad pets. She is unable to resist a stray animal, and the word is out. She works from a converted pig sty when she’s not travelling around France doing research for her website www.thegoodlifefrance.com, which tells you everything you need to know about France and more.

She gave up a sensible job in London, where she was born, to renovate a bargain basement barn and turn it into a home – an ongoing project. Along the way she became maid to six cats, three dogs, fifty chickens and ducks, and four mad geese.

She is an award-winning travel writer and social media fan who loves to share her life, explorations and photos on Facebook at The Good Life France.

About the Book:

One grey dismal day, Janine Marsh was on a trip to northern France to pick up some cheap wine. She returned to England a few hours later having put in an offer on a rundown old barn in the rural Seven Valleys area of Pas de Calais. This was not something she’d expected or planned for.

Janine eventually gave up her job in London to move with her husband to live the good life in France. Or so she hoped. While getting to grips with the locals and la vie Française, and renovating her dilapidated new house, a building lacking the comforts of mains drainage, heating or proper rooms, and with little money and less of a clue, she started to realize there was lot more to her new home than she could ever have imagined.Ten years ago, Janine Marsh decided to leave her corporate life behind to fix up a run-down barn in northern France. This is the true story of her rollercoaster ride, in many ways a love story, with her sharp observations on the very different way of life, culture and etiquette of France.

From her early struggles and homesickness through personal tragedy, to her attempts to become self-sufficient and to breed ‘the fattest chickens in the village’, Janine learned that there was more to her new home than she could ever have imagined.

The Treebobs and the Dizzy Broomsticks by Declan Harney

Declan Harney brings alive the magical art of storytelling in this wonderfully engaging tale starring his amazing Treebobs, lovely fairies, wicked witches and a host of woodland folk. Simply enchanting, with beautifully illustrations, The Treebobs and the Dizzy Broomsticks is guaranteed to capture the heart and imagination of every child.

When the peacefulness of the Treebobs and fairies home, the Treebob tree, is shattered by the sounds of sawing and cackling laughter, Treebob Bluebell, and two fairies, Bindweed Belle and Foxglove Philip decide that they will have to go and find out what is happening.

Nothing could have prepared them for the sight which meets their eyes! The two wicked witches Rotten Rena and Badlot Barbara are standing in the forest twirling their wands, and magically making giant saws fly through the air, cutting down the branches on the forests lovely trees!

But why are they doing it?

Well, it’s not until posters start being put up, that the woodland dwellers discover to their dismay that the wicked pair of witches are opening a broomstick shop!

Well, Rotten Rena and Badlot Barbara are very happy, the business is a flying success, witches come from far and wide, eager to buy their brooms, they are making lots of gold. However, whilst the witches are gleefully looking to the future, the woodland folk are in despair, their beautiful forest is no longer peaceful, the trees are being cut down, and the air is filled with raucous laughter and cackling, as the witches zoom around trying out brooms.

Something has to be done! So, safe in the sanctuary of the Treebob tree, the Treebobs, fairies, and woodland dwellers call a meeting. Babs Broomsticks must fail! But, how can they make this happen?

A plan is formed, and the spell is made, it takes heaps of teamwork, a huge measure of enthusiasm, a big dose of cleverness, a bundle of cooperation, a drop of determination, topped off with a big sprinkle of magic, but will it work?

To find out what the spell is, and if it worked, you will have to read this very entertaining and beautifully written story.

Full of magical Treebobs, lovely fairies, wicked witches, and woodland folk, this enchanting tale totally captured the heart and imagination of my little granddaughter. As I read it she eagerly turned the pages, she just couldn’t wait to hear what was coming next, and see the beautiful illustrations.

As a mother and grandmother I liked the fact that the author has used The Treebobs and the Dizzy Broomsticks to teach young readers important messages of harmony, thoughtfulness, friendship, and teamwork.

In the back there is also the added bonus’ of Rotten Rena’s Squashed Eyed Pie (one I’m definitely going to have to try with my granddaughter), and some games to play.

About the Author:

Declan Harney started his professional life as an attorney in 1994. His focus is trusts law and probate. However, his passion for writing began as a child, entering many writing competitions for fiction and poetry. His love of writing children’s books started when he attended creative writing classes where he wrote “The Shop that sold wishes and magic.” His stories of The Treebobs about the elves who live on a magical sycamore tree came from watching hundreds of sycamore seeds blowing in the wind on a stormy day. The first story of The Treebobs has now developed into a full series of 25 stories, all featuring the wonderfully wicked Rotten Rena, the magical Bindweed Belle and all the Treebobs in the enchanted forest. Declan Harney is a keen conservationist and supporter of woodlands and wildlife. He lives in a small town by the coast where he continues to write.

About the Book:

Another in the sucessful Treebob Series. The enchanted forest comes alive with new, loud, awful sounds. The two wicked witches are up to their tricks as they cut down trees in The Treebobs forest home. Why are they doing this? How can they be stopped before they destroy everything? The Treebobs and the magical fairies team up … with quite dizzying results. Includes activity pages to extend the learning for children at home and in the classroom

Mysterious things are happening after dark….

Esme only has her dad, and now he is off to a new life in New Zealand, the house is for sale, and Esme has got to live with her aunt, her dad’s sister, in a nearby village. Leaving Jugminster, and her dad leaving her, when her mother has already died, is more than Esme can stand, and distraught, she asks the Hands to keep an eye on her old house until it is sold.

Of course the Hands agree, what are friends for? However over the next weekend strange things are happen at Esme’s house, and late at night, a mysterious black car can be seen leaving the barn in the field which is behind the house, after dark.

Despite their very best detective work, the Hands have plenty of clues, but they still have nothing firm to go on, so Amy suggests Esme has a sleepover at hers, perhaps six heads will be better than five.

Esme happily agrees, and is even more excited when she is made an honorary Hand for the night. In their headquarters they ponder the clues, hatch a plan, then as night time is drawing in, they put it into action.

Will they discover what is happening at The Nook?

Also, why is the black car hidden away in the barn, and why does it only come out under the cover of darkness?

The importance of friendship and comradeship shines through in this exciting mystery adventure, and this story will keep you guessing until the very last page.

The Jug Valley Mysteries BOYS v. GIRLS (Book 1) by Anne Digby

So who are the best detectives – the boys or the girls?

This story is set in the town of Jugminster, where twins Tim and Amy Dalladay live in the ramshackle old Knoll House, with their parents and younger brother, Harry.

Tim, has two best friends Ludo and Ben and the children all go to Jug Valley County Junior School. One day the three friends are met at school by Peter Pay, a younger boy who tells them that his bike has been stolen overnight from the bike sheds. The boys decide that they must try and help Peter by discovering who could have stolen it. Of course embarking on such a dangerous venture means that they must create a name for their group, but what should it be? Cleverly, they pick on the name ‘Handles,’ and if you read the story you will discover why this is such a clever name.

Of course when Tim’s sister Amy and her friend Mini discover the ‘Handles’ and what they are going to do, they want to join in. But as you can imagine they are told in no uncertain terms that detective work is a job for boys, not girls. Of course the girls think this is rubbish and are determined to show the boys that they are just as good as they are, and so they set up their own rival club called – guess what?

As the rival groups try to discover clues and set traps, the whole thing becomes more personal as Tim and Amy’s mum’s bike is stolen. Now both sets of friends are even more determined to find the thief!

But if the police have no suspects, how can they do this?

Is the thief someone at school, or an adult?

Where are the bikes being hidden and what will happen to them?

This exciting mystery will have boys and girls alike avidly reading through its pages to discover if the bikes are found, and if they are, who the finders are, the boys or the girls.

Although this is a boys v girls story, throughout it the author has interwoven important life lessons of teamwork, friendship, loyalty, determination and compassion.

Reading it to my grandson, took me back to my childhood, playing with my brother, having dens and great adventures together, however, none were as exciting as this!

About the Book: When a bike is stolen from the school bike sheds at Jug Valley Juniors, Tim forms a secret club with his friends Ben and Ludo to try to solve the crime. They call themselves the Handles. ‘This isn’t girls’ stuff,’ he tells his twin sister Amy. ‘It needs boys to handle it.’
To get back at the boys, Amy and her best friend Mini jokingly call themselves the Spouts…but it’s no longer a joke when Mum’s lovely bike is stolen, too, giving the girls a serious quest of their own. And so the rival detectives go into action – mainly against each other.
Yet they should be working together if they want to avoid danger….

Tau Bada: The Quest and Memoir of a Vulnerable Man by John E. Quinlan

Ever dreamed of doing something different, going to exotic places, stepping right out of your safety zone and taking the bull by the horns?
Do you wonder if people really do just change direction, start new businesses in different countries, juggle their lives, just like that? Is it possible?

Well, in this incredible biography the author takes the reader on his remarkable journey. After the end of his marriage he gets on his motorbike, leaves Grosse Point (a suburb of Detroit) and begins an adventure which takes him from the American West, through to Australia/Papua New Guinea.

An established CEO- entrepreneur, the author is not afraid of taking risks, and going with the flow. This bravery takes him on travels to amazing places, where he forges forward with the courage of a true entrepreneur.

On his odyssey, he finds new love and is never afraid to go with the moment, something I truly admire.

The book is beautifully descriptive and I especially loved his account of his life whilst he was running his South Pacific fishing business, which gave some fascinating insights into what life is really about living on-board ship. His first impressions and dealings with the South Pacific island natives and his business dealings with them are interesting, and the great thing is, that whatever the outcome he brushes himself off and starts again.

Juggling life between his business interests in Grosse Point and other part of the world is difficult at times, emotionally and financially draining, however, he copes with everything and is an inspiration to those of us who would love (or imagine they would love) to walk in his shoes.

He was known as Tau Bada, ‘big white man’ by the native farmers of Papua New Guinea where he worked hard to build them a sustainable living through the selling of coffee and chilies.

Travel lovers will thoroughly enjoy his accounts of his visits to different places, and wish they were a fly on the wall watching him meet people from many nations. It is an exciting way to really learn what it is like to live amongst various peoples and learn their customs.

This book is truly an awe-inspiring quest of discovery for one man, re-evaluating his life, taking on challenges, dealing with the consequences and all the time living life to the full. Whatever your dreams and ambitions, I would highly recommend this book, it is inspirational, informative and very thought provoking.

About the Book:

Tau Bada: The Quest & Memoir of a Vulnerable Man is a true-action story about money, new love, cultural challenges, the essential messages of the American West and of the South Pacific, and, throughout, a personal trek of self-discovery. In the dangerous, laughable and profound experiences of Tau Bada are revelations that connect the vulnerabilities in us all. The question is, as the author says: ”What was risky, and what was I fearful of? Was it the untraveled asphalt and concrete roads or the uncharted inward journey? There were no maps for the latter.”

The Witch’s Shadow (The Mind Traveller Book 2) by James McKenna

51nv1-pmmfl-_ac_us160_

Rosie is a 15 year old orphan who lives with her Uncle Hugo at Haston Manor, however, she is also very special as she has inherited the ability to travel into Mind Space from her mother. Mind Space is a mysterious realm which can be reached by special people called Mind Traveller’s, and it is inhabited by strange and mythical creatures, angels, demons and more.

This story begins on Rosie’s end of term sports day, at St Monica’s Boarding School for Girls, and her new adventure is about to begin…

That night, lying on her bed in the dorm, she is transported by Elissa, her SAS Angel to the Ministry of Procedures building, a special place where everything in her world and other parallel ones are organised. There Rosie learns that she must go into Mind Space again. Apparently she has inherited from her mother a section there, however, is overrun with scrowlers, and their owners, the Dark Angels are beginning to win the angel wars.

The Rule Maker Grubalot has decreed that as a Mind Traveller, and Warrior of Light, she must free Prince Tiago and his main army of Cloud Riders from a terrible place, so they can fight the Dark Angels, kill the scowlers, and save the human race.

However, this is not all, she is told that she must continue her mother’s mission and collect the pieces of the Dove of Peace, however the next piece is in a place soon to disappear forever!

As Uncle Hugo sets off with Rosie to Larkin Cottage in Southwold, Suffolk, for their holidays, little does he know that he is fulfilling his role in the plan, for the cottage has stood there for hundreds of years, and it, and its inhabitants have their own special part to play.

Soon Rosie is travelling through Mind Space again with the aid of her magic talismans, advice from her mother’s diaries, and her Three Musketeers (Charlie, Oliver and French boy Jean-Paul). However on their quest Rosie soon discovers that the mission and the researching her school project about the Battle of Sale Bay have combined, and have become a terrifying real life adventure.

Can the brave explorers find Princess Lavinia, her baby, and a piece of the Dove of Peace?

Will they survive the dangers which lurks at every turn, as Gizeda, the Dark witch, and her minions try desperately to thwart their mission?

Find out the answers to these questions, and so many more in this exciting story where the war against good and evil rages and mysterious creatures roam the lands.

This book is the second book in this series by this talented author, its sequel is called The Mind Traveller, however it also stands alone.

About the Author:

713tsmd931l-_sy200_I was born while enemy aircraft bombed London, spent some of my childhood amidst the wretchedness of post-war Austria, then with siblings and mother, followed my military father across the world. At the age of 15 I joined the British Army and attended the apprenticeship college at Harrogate, then the Royal School of Military Engineering. At 17 I passed selection for the Paras serving in the Gulf and Europe. Afterwards, running my own electronic and physical protection company came easily and gave insider knowledge for my crime thrillers The Unseen, The Uncounted and The Unwanted. Now a father and grandfather, in parallel to these crime thrillers, I have ventured into the action/fantasy world of the young reader aged 12+16. The Mind Traveller is the first of a series where Rosie adventures deep into the unchartered universe of Mind Space. The Witch’s Shadow second in the series will be published on the 5th of June. As a fulltime writer I live between the UK, Portugal and Ireland.

About the Book: Once again Rosie enters Mind Space to fight in the Angel Wars. Her mission, to release Prince Tiago and the Cloud Riders trapped in the Valley of Stone so they can join battle against the scrowlers and Dark Angels.

Chased by the witch, Gizeda whose bite turns victims into spiders, Rosie and her pals must first rescue Tiago’s wife and child who are trapped in Southwold, 1672. Elissa from the Special Angel Service gives help but all are caught in the sea battle between the Dutch and English. Danger is everywhere, Gizeda closes in and Rosie has only her own determination and skills to save her friends.

Mind Space, where time future slips to time past through time present, that place of transition where all time is condensed by infinity, a place which must exist yet cannot exist except in our minds.

What I thought:

This enchanting story begins on Petunia Pottersfield’s 11th Birthday. Petunia is a fairy who lives in Furrow Grove. She has a mass of unruly hair, and she’s writing in her diary who she calls Bob. Why Bob, why not? After all everything deserves a name, doesn’t it? Bob is very special to her because he is the place where she confides all her hopes and fears.

You see, Petunia is lonely, she doesn’t have many friends because she is very clumsy, and she doesn’t like school either. She has a kind heart, it’s just that things just don’t turn out as she intends them too…

Then things look up, she has a new friend Alisia, and the girls have great fun together, until they notice that something has gone terribly wrong with the inhabitants of Furrow Grove, they have changed…

At first, the girls manage to hide, but then disaster strikes and Alisia is caught.

Petunia is desperate, and eventually finds help, but will it be in time to save Alisia and the fairies of Furrow Grove?

Find out in this charming and exciting children’s adventure, from the author of The Paladins of Naretia.
