Rampage: A Jason Scarsdale Novel by Alan Brenham

51NSo8UpPfL__SX331_BO1,204,203,200_

NEW RELEASE – Another superb masterpiece from Alan Brenham.

Set in Austin, Texas, this story begins with Justin Wayne Cooper a.k.a. Mad Dog, repaying a debt by destroying a grave in the Heavenly Garden Memorial Park. Waiting in the car are Rastaman, and Runt. Fresh out of prison Mad Dog is on a mission to right some wrongs done to Snake, his cellmate. Impressed by his prison tales and hardness, the other two have become willing accomplices. At first it’s all a game, a good laugh, an opportunity to get some ready cash, but then the stakes get higher, and when the killings begin, they suddenly realise how Justin got his nickname…

In Alan Brenham’s first book, Price of Justice, we met widower, Detective Jason Scarsdale, his daughter Shannon and Dani Mueller. After the events in that book ex Austin PD Crime Analyst Dani moved back home to her family in Garmisch, Germany. However, three years on, Jason and Dani still have a very strong transcontinental relationship, and very soon Shannon and Jason are due to visit Dani and celebrate Shannon’s birthday at the same time.

However the holiday isn’t here yet and arriving at work, Jason, who has transferred back to Homicide from the Sex Crimes division, is called into his superior’s office and informed by Sargent Kipfer, that he has a new partner, a very attractive divorcee called Tatum Harper.

Soon a reluctant Jason, and his new chatty and very keen partner are trying to discover who the reckless killers are, and what links the crimes together. Whilst in the background, Jason’s relationship with Dani has taken a strange turn which gives the story an intriguing subplot.

Despite the clues and evidence coming together, nothing will stick, the death toll is rising. Who is the mysterious MD?

If you like reading crime thrillers then you will love Rampage. They say write about what you know and this action-packed plot has been very cleverly written, and has the great attention to detail I have come to expect from Alan Brenham. With his lifetimes experience as a Texas law enforcement officer, criminal prosecutor and defense attorney, the author’s in-depth knowledge, and understanding in these fields enables him to take his lucky readers on an unforgettable journey into the dark criminal underworld, its chilling inhabitants and the people who protect us from them.

About the Author: Alan Brenham is the pen name of Alan Behr, a Texas criminal law attorney and former law enforcement officer.

His first crime novel, Price of Justice, won several awards including best in police/crime fiction. A second novel, Cornered, was released by Black Opal Books on Amazon on July 13, 2014 in print format. A third novel, titled Rampage, is expected to be released on July 4, 2015. He’s writing his fourth and fifth novels, with more to come.

He was born in upstate New York, in the small Catskill Mountains town of Delhi. He worked as a Texas law enforcement officer for over seventeen years and as a criminal prosecutor and later criminal defense attorney for over twenty-five years. Today he lives in the Austin, Texas, area with his wife, Lillian.

About the Book: The stakes soar, both professionally and personally, for Austin PD Detective Jason Scarsdale as he finds himself in a race against time to hunt down a vicious gang hell-bent on murder. Realizing that his new partner, the attractive divorcee Tatum Harper, could be trouble in more ways than one, he tries to run her out of Homicide. Will their partnership destroy his romantic relationship with long-time girlfriend Dani Mueller? Will they both survive the harrowing face-off with the increasingly unhinged gang leader?

A Murderer’s Heart by Julie Elizabeth Powell

51wsbx9+l5L__AA160_I thoroughly enjoyed this story!

I reviewed this book as an audiobook and had never read or listened to Julie Elizabeth Powell’s books before.

I have to say firstly that the narrator, Melanie Fraser, has a wonderfully warm voice and an impressive voice range both male and female.

Dr Anne Blake is a psychiatrist with her own practice and she also helps out at the Tadmore Psychiatric Hospital as well. Unmarried, yet fulfilled in a job she loves, Anne is a kind and thoughtful person, helping everyone she can, both professionally and personally. She is lucky to have a fantastic Personal Assistant, Sam, who seems in tune with her and keeps her professional world in order.

Naturally, when she discovers that a good friend thinks she may be in danger Anne does all she can to help and support her. However, it soon becomes apparent that events are taking a much more sinister turn, there is a killer at large…

As the plot thickens this story evolves wonderfully, with plenty of twists and turns and a surprising ending.

About the Author:  Hello everyone. If you haven’t guessed by now I have a passion for words and have eighteen titles published in a variety of genres…all thanks to Lulu and Kindle, much hard work and sleepless nights.

My eldest daughter has flown the nest and is married to a man who doesn’t mind his mother-in-law though my son has only recently decided the stretch his wings and now happiness surrounds him in the form of someone I think is just adorable.

My middle child is off on a mysterious adventure, the like of which I can only guess…and tried to do so in my first book, Gone.

I love to read and am looking for ways to double time so to indulge in the mysterious and wonderful and delicious and strange…my favourite kind of story.

Writing is my passion, though I enjoy creating handcrafted cards, jewellery making, scrapbooking, painting, drawing, 3D art and dabbling in encaustic art whenever I can.

Oh yes, I used to teach or mark exam papers but now concentrate on writing and enjoying my new life, which materialised, as if by a miracle. Though still dislike all those necessary domestic chores that would, for me, be included in the Rings of Hell!

That’s it. Thank you to anyone who reads my books…enjoy the flight!

About the Book: Anne Blake, psychiatrist, is good at her job and believes that even the most sick at heart can be cured…or at least saved enough that they can lead a better life.

But maybe she’s wrong?

Maybe within a murderer’s heart, evil lurks and nothing can be done except to save yourself?

The Starlight Club 6: Double Seven by Joe Corso

51o+nSZh-UL__AA160_Bob is staying at his daughter Lynn’s house in Darien, Connecticut, as bad weather has prevented his return home. At times like these Lynn likes to take advantage of the opportunity to ask her father for some more stories from the famous Starlight Club…

Looking back over the years, Bob decides to tell her about a time when Joey Bones, Bull and Richie swapped the Crown Victoria for a Caddy convertible and drove to Vegas on business for Red. The drive as it turns out was to prove very eventful when Joey decided to pop in and see his sister JoAnne, in Bonner Springs. However, he is none too pleased to discover that her boyfriend, has beaten her up.

When they arrive at her house and confront Brian O’Rourke, the boyfriend, they discover not only is he a thug, he’s also a drug dealer. With the thumbs up from the boss they sort out the situation, however, the results of their actions brings about an interesting chain of events.

Big Red knows that getting what you want and making people bend to your will does not necessarily have to be achieved by actual violence, after all when you are that famous, the suggestion is often enough. He also knows that looking after the little guys is important, they will owe you for life, and do whatever is needed, when the time come for you to call in the favor.

With Trenchie happily married, and romance in the air, Red realises that something is missing in his own life, he can have any girl he wants but he wants a wife, and there is only one lady who will fit the bill, Iris, but will she want him? There’s only one way to find out…

For Starlight Club fans, these tales are a wonderful insight into the dark underworld of mobster life in New York, where life is cheap, and there’s no time for regrets. This book, like others in the series is studded with big names with shady pasts, and gives credence to the clever façade the Starlight Club, and others like it provide.

Another great story from award winning author Joe Corso!

Murder of the Banker’s Daughter: The Killing of Marion Parker by R. Barri Flowers

51+zoHgH-DL__AA160_Fans of true crime stories will love this audiobook by best-selling author and award-winning criminologist R. Barri Flowers.

With her great narration Angel Clark takes the listener back to Los Angeles, California in December 1927, when Marion Parker, a daughter of a well-known banker was picked up from school for a seemingly legitimate purpose. By chance, the twelve year olds sister looked on never guessing that it would be the last time she would see her twin alive…

The details of this abduction and the horrific brutal slaying of this innocent young girl, despite her parents best efforts rocked America.

The manhunt, capture, trial and verdict seized the attention of the public and brought home the vulnerability of the nation’s children.

This is a really interesting short story which I had never heard of.  As a bonus, for his fans, the author has included excerpts from two other true crime shorts, Murder at the Pencil Factory and Mass Murder in the Sky”, as well as an excerpt from his book The Sex Slave Murders.

Why We Love Serial Killers: The Curious Appeal of the World’s Most Savage Murderers by Scott Bonn

517sOSAoSUL__AA160_Firstly, it’s confession time, as soon as I saw the title of this book I was drawn to it like a moth, I am one of those people who cannot resist reading about the people who carry out horrendous crimes. Throughout history there have been plenty of examples both real, and those which have been the product of somebody else’s mind, such as the serial killer Hannibal Lecter first made famous in the book and film Silence of the Lambs.

The author of this book, has however a special insight into its content. Not only is Dr Scott Bonn a Professor of Criminology but he also comes from a media and analytic background.

The author explores what makes these people so interesting to those of us who look on with morbid fascination at their crimes. He looks into their background, upbringing, and ultimately the people and events which have influenced them. However, he also looks at role that the killers themselves, media and law enforcement agencies have in the public’s perception.

For anyone interested in the subject, this book will be fascinating, famous serial killers such as David Berkowitz and Dennis Rader, and the author has interviewed some of them. There is also a look into the world of their cult followers and people who will pay for memorabilia and work by them, something I never realised happened.

About the Author: Dr. Scott Bonn is a professor of criminology at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey. His expert commentary has appeared in the “New York Times,” the “Huffington Post,” Headline News Network, and more. Dr. Bonn hosts a weekly college radio show and has recently appeared as an expert analyst in the A&E documentary “The Long Island Serial Killer.” The author resides in Manhattan, New York.

The Surrogates by Consuella Harris

51DXifNWx7L__AA160_A brilliantly intriguing story.

The subject of surrogacy raises various emotions and views in people, depending, I suspect, on such factors as, their sex, religious viewpoint and life experiences.

Many think what a wonderful, selfless thing it must be to carry a child for another woman and bring happiness to a couple who would never have been parents without help. They ask themselves, “Who are these generous women, and why do they do it?”

The more cynical wonder who finances the companies who set up the matches between the surrogates and the adopter’s, and what is in it for them?

However, it’s never as simple as that, there are no black and white answers to be found when dealing with human lives and emotions – we are complicated beings.

Truth be known, like most things, most people, most of the time don’t think about it, and neither did Keith Brown, ex-retired police officer, now successful investigative reporter until he received a phone call from Valerie Scovall, a Superior Court Judge for Cuyahoga County.

Valerie is sure there is a connection between the deaths by natural causes, i.e. heart attack, on the same day, of two prominent public figures.

Meeting her, the next day, in her chambers, Keith agrees to take on the case, and to her requirement that the source must remain confidential. Only one person is the exception to this rule Denise Jones, one of the surrogates.

For anyone interested in people this is a compelling read, as Keith reveals the stories behind Denise, Sharon and Carolyn, three women who decided to become surrogates. However, inextricably entwined are of course, the children they gave birth to, and the people who adopted them.

And, we mustn’t forget the men who were the founders of the Lake Shore Parenting Group, the adoption agency who put them together, and their motives, after all, without them, none of it would have happened.

Or of course, Valerie…

A really enjoyable and absorbing story which I would not hesitate to recommend. It is about a controversial subject, packed with human interest, mystery, intrigue and plenty of twists and turns.

Desolation Row (Austin Starr Mysteries Book 1) by Kay Kendall

This story is set at the 1960’s during the Vietnam War, at the time when Richard Nixon became president and the hippy, ‘peace and love’ scene was in full swing.

Newly married Austin Starr, and her husband David, have fled Texas. David is a draft resistor and they are living, with others who are like minded in Canada.

Settling down in a strange country, so different from her home is hard enough for Austin, however she is determined to be a good wife and supportive of her husband. Then, suddenly her life is turned upside down when she makes a discovery which leads to her husband being accused of murder.

Frustrated, she is determined to discover the truth, in what the police feel is an open and shut case. With a flair for investigating that even the CIA have noticed, Austin decides that she must uncover the truth herself about who murdered fellow draft resistor, Reginald a Senator’s son.

This is a heart-warming tale of one woman’s determination to clear her husband’s name. Passionately determined, the resolutely unflinching Austin delves into dark corners and discovers deeply buried secrets, which open cans of worms, and put her very life in danger.

I found this an engaging story and a brilliant mystery with plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing, set in a very controversial period of modern history.

In Temple, Texas, Police Detective Matt Brady, assisted by FBI Special Agent Steve Casani, is investigating the disappearances of five beautiful women. Desperate, with no leads and the number of missing women growing at an alarming pace, Matt is desperate for answers.

Everyone knows that the person we become in life can be affected in a moment, by a word, or circumstance. The paths we take as a result and their consequences are sometimes, only discovered after the passing of time. These life-changing moments or words, for some people are stamped in their mind forever, silently festering and waiting to emerge, bringing back memories, which cloud the present.

This book is even more enjoyable because, whilst writing it, the author has been able to draw from his wealth and variety of personal experience in police and law, among which is his time as a Temple patrol officer and, Assistant General Counsel for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

A brilliantly written compelling thriller, action packed, clever and with twists and turns which are guaranteed to keep the reader guessing until the very end.

Review by Susan Keefe

Detective Max Larkin has just returned to work in the Rockton Police Department after being suspended for withholding information, following his solving of the ‘Time Killer’ murders with his partner Jesse.

Straight away, Captain Perry has another case for the partners to solve. Professor Lawrence Finestein has been found dead, under unusual circumstances. As the detectives’ try to discover a motive, who was responsible, and what made the killer brand his victim, the need for answers becomes more urgent as other victims start to appear, each with the same calling card.

Unfortunately, Max and Jesse just do not seem to be able to agree when the killer is caught and soon a rift appears, one which must be healed for the sake of everybody. As the tension mounts, new discoveries are made and it’s time for Max and Jesse put their differences aside and work together.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this fast moving crime thriller. Right from page one it is action packed, with plenty of twists and turns, and a storyline, which keeps the reader guessing, right until the end.

An excellent second story in the Max Larkin Detective series, I look forward to reading more.

Review by Susan Keefe:

Isidore Farrugia is a cop, brought up during the Years of Lead, a horrific period in Italian history, a time of terror and killing, his childhood memories, scarred forever by the brutal death of his mother. Nevertheless, he is a good man, loyal and protective of his friends and colleagues.

This is why although off duty and out of jurisdiction, when his friend Bianca arranges a meeting with her informant, Charles Brooks, he insists on coming too. However, soon his onlooker role changes, when the young 23-year-old American, Bianca came to meet is killed, and so are his assassins.

Then another murder takes place, and the Italian police investigators find themselves unearthing a web of political intrigue.

Bianca has a secret though, she knows, she must uncover the truth behind the information she has been entrusted with, despite warnings from her mysterious online contact Loki, to stay away. Adastra, a weapons manufacturer is hiding something… But what?

I found myself hooked, right from the start of this brilliant, action packed, political crime thriller, which is set in Milan.

For those, like myself, who are interested in history, the Afterword about the Years of Lead by Claudio Ferrara was very interesting.

This is actually the third book in the ‘Roma’ series, by this talented author, and there is a tantalising glimpse at the end into his fourth book, ’Turning to Stone.’
