The Rugged Entrepreneur: What Every Disruptive Business Leader Should Know by Carlton Scott Andrew

The essential guide on how to succeed as an entrepreneur.

Carlton Scott Andrew, the author of this educational and inspiring book has had an incredibly successful business career. Whilst at North Carolina State University he founded the college market newspaper, then graduated with a degree in economics and business management. To gain a high level of business finance education he worked in corporate banking, then spent four years with NCNB (now BoA) in their corporate division handling mergers & acquisitions and corporate accounts. With this vast business experience behind him he then began his career as a serial entrepreneur.

Rugged Entrepreneurs (aka “Ruggeds,) are the author’s name for people like himself who have the strength, and rugged determination, to build a successful business and then take it to the top. They are that special breed of people who are not afraid to take the bull by the horns, and work hard to make their dreams and ambitions come true.

Top businesses are created, and grow at the hands of dedicated professionals who have strong work ethics, have learnt essential business skills, and have confidence in themselves and those around them. Carlton Scott Andrew has, through looking back over his career pinpointed four key elements for success, (1) A fervent work ethic, (2) A humble and healthy pride (what he calls “Rugged Pride,”) (3) Fortitudo mentis (aka, mental toughness, and lastly (4) Faith.

These four elements are explained in detail, enabling those who have the fire in them to succeed’ to do so. Everything you need to know is within these pages, clearly described and backed with real-life examples, facts, analogies and stories which will help the reader retain the information through emotional word picture associations. Not only does he cover the establishment of a successful business, but he then looks forward into the future and the impact people, events and competition can have on it. The reader learns about the necessity for foresight, insight, drive and purpose, all essential elements if your enterprise is to succeed, and go to the top.

As an entrepreneur, your business is your responsibility, it is you, your presence in the business world. Perhaps you already have a business which is struggling, and you don’t know what to do. Well this is the book for you too, the author gives you the tools you need to understand what you need to improve, be successful, and for your business to stand out from the crowd. However, be warned the road to the attainment of your goals is not an easy one, or for the faint hearted, however, with big sacrifices come huge rewards, for those who take up the gauntlet.

This author knows what it take to succeed and is living proof that his blueprint works .Packed with sound business advice, backed by strong examples and enlightening concepts, this book is, in my opinion, essential reading for anyone who wants to succeed. Carlton Scott Andrew has given you the tools you need, now it is up to you to use them.

About the Author:

Over the past 25 years, highly successful serial entrepreneur Scott Andrew founded and/or owned companies spanning multiple industries, including beverage manufacturing and wholesale, real estate development, multi-model franchising, construction, advertising, rodeo production, mass media, consulting, and internet marketing & distribution in retail and B2B. In 2013, recognizing a need for disruptive distribution and retail changes in the 100 billion dollar U.S. home furnishings industry, he brazenly established Retail Service Systems (RSS), serving as its President and CEO. Along with the company’s COO, Jerry Williams, and the entire passionate RSS team, he dramatically changed how franchise models scale by helping local business owners compete with the big regional and national power players. This endeavor not only lead to RSS becoming what Inc. magazine has ranked and recognized as one of the fastest growing companies in America—with a compounded annual growth rate of 816% in their 2019 edition—but it has trained and empowered hundreds of Rugged Entrepreneurs in the process. In that same year, Andrew and the RSS team had the vision to launch the franchise bioPURE Services in the microbial germ fighting space ahead of the 2020 global COVID-19 pandemic. Through vision, strategic asset acquisitions, applying advanced technology in operational and marketing systems, and developing proprietary methodologies, RSS has now positioned itself as a franchise market leader in services, specialized distribution, and retailing by building a national network of corporate-owned, independently licensed, and franchised locations in multiple industries. Today, Andrew’s and RSS’s legacy of starting business in multiple countries continues with licensed and franchised businesses in 47 states, as well as with state-of the-art headquarters, customer service, and national training centers in Columbus, Ohio; Jacksonville, Florida; and Johnson City, Tennessee. As a perennial student both of human nature and American free enterprise, Andrew has a lot to share about the attributes every entrepreneur needs to develop as they build their business, whether it is one they create from scratch or one they are launching from an established model. The Rugged Entrepreneur offers readers a blueprint for how to lay a sturdy foundation upon which to build that business. It also offers valuable insight into how to disrupt the marketplace with your most viable ideas. As you read what is both a business memoir and business handbook, you will see how Andrew picked himself up from the inevitable early career stumbles and went on to create what is unquestionably an example of the great American Dream. Despite his inordinate hard work you will love and want to emulate the unique way he has established a wonderful work-life balance too! –This text refers to the hardcover edition.

Tiny Blunders/Big Disasters: Thirty-Nine Tiny Mistakes That Changed the World Forever (Revised Edition) by Jared Knott

Fascinating tales of moments and events which changed history.

If history books were all written like this one, there would be many more people interested in the subject; it’s simply fascinating!

Meticulously researched, the author, Jared Knott, entertains his readers with incredible examples of disasters which have occurred throughout history. Skilfully written, he illustrates wonderfully the consequences of the butterfly effect of tiny blunders, accidental changes in plans, and not so good intentions have changed the course of history for people, countries, and indeed in some instances, the world.

I studied Modern History and knew the details of some of the events he writes about. Yet, he has uncovered tiny details, omissions, or slight mistakes which occurred at the time, and in telling them, reveals how these moments in time had enormous impacts on our world today. I love the quotes he uses throughout, however one especially highlights the message that we learn by our mistakes.

“Success in life is the result of good judgment. Good judgment is usually the result of experience. Experience is usually the result of bad judgment.  – Anthony Robbins”

Whatever period of history you are interested in, there will be a story to entertain you, proving in the immortal words of Robert Burns written in 1785, “best-laid schemes o’ mice an’ men / Gang aft agley [go often awry].” Personally, I loved reading the chapter on sibling rivalry, discovering sibling pairings which I never realized, and marvelled at the rifts which are created in families, and which in some cases last a lifetime.

Jared Knott is a father of five and he lives with his wife, Kathryn, in the Atlanta area. He is a decorated war veteran who went on to have a successful career in sales and marketing, and the home improvement industry. The author of numerous articles on a variety of subjects, “Tiny Blunders/Big Disasters,” is his first book and one which I recommend highly as not only informative but extremely entertaining.

About the Author:

Jared Knott has had numerous articles published in the Mensa Bulletin and in graduate school textbooks on subjects ranging from Supreme Court Reform to Arctic Exploration. He was a decorated combat infantry officer in Vietnam in the First Air Cavalry Division. In his civilian career, he has served as a vice president of sales + marketing and marketing director in the home improvement industry. A father of five, he lives in the Atlanta area with his wife, Kathryn.

About the Book:

The small things that had great historical consequences…

“Heart-stopping, compelling, and fun!” Win Blevins, New York Times Bestselling Author

How often does it happen that a single tiny mistake causes an entire civilization to collapse? More often than you think! Readers of Jared Knott’s book, Tiny Blunders/Big Disasters, will be amazed at the little things that changed history in a big way. Here are a few examples:

  • A single document poorly designed by one single clerk in one single county changed the outcome of a presidential election and led directly to a major war.
  • A soldier accidentally kicks a helmet off of the top of a wall and causes an empire to collapse.
  • A small mechanical device several inches long fails to function, which changes the outcome of WWII and leads to the death of millions of people.
  • A man fails to gather his army in time to defend against an attack because of the temptation of opium and a young slave woman.
  • And many more!

Atlanta’s Concealment of the Baby Gun Club Landfill by Jerry Brow

Shocking revelations of neglect and disregard of public health and safety in the State of Atlanta.

If I could turn back time…. I wonder how many of the people who have worked and are still working for the City of Atlanta, in the State of Georgia have this thought during recent times. As the saying goes, they had “Bitten off more than they could chew” when they forced Jerry Brow to accept their compulsory purchase of four investment properties he owned, located near the dumpsite, now known as Baby Gun Club Landfill.

Jerry Brow is the author of this shocking book which details the terrible disregard for public health and safety throughout decades which the State of Georgia and the City of Atlanta, have sanctioned just to satisfy their greed and to solve a problem quickly and with total disregard for environmental and public health. The location? Northwest Atlanta, Georgia, about five miles from downtown Atlanta.

However the story begins back in the 1940’s when the civil rights of the “black” people were non-existent, however, the effects are haunting the lives of people to this day, in both health, environment and financially. The “white” people way back then didn’t want their copious amounts of waste on their back doorstep, so they simply dumped it on the doorsteps of the “black” people, who had at that time no voice and no rights. The site, The Gun Club Landfill.

Through thorough research, the obtaining of official documents and talking with those who know, or remember, Jerry Brow describes in detail the permitted landfill trickery which took place over time, which allowed the city to accomplish their task of making the Baby Gun Club Landfill site disappear into or within the Gun Club Landfill! Jerry found a living witness, Mrs. X who, in the 1960’s remembers the dumping of waste over the years, and is an eye witness to the injustices which have been perpetuated over the years by a government who just didn’t care. Now a grandmother, she has watched the continual development of housing project homes for “black” people adjacent to the dump, where the residents not only had to see and smell the waste, but also suffer illnesses, skin lesions, and respiratory problems because of it. Health problems are no surprise when there are toxic gasses being released, cocktails of chemicals, asbestos and hazardous waste, and not only that but it is also adjacent to Procter Creek which leads directly into the national Chattahoochee River.

Deception and deceit, and total disregard for public health has continued through the years. In the early 90’s the city shut down Gun Club Landfill due to complaints, however, nothing was done to Baby Gun Club Landfill, and no attempt was carried out to inform citizens or investors like Jerry Brow, who bought four parcels near there with an eye to the future. They had no idea Baby Gun Club was a dumpsite, and how what lies beneath their homes would come to affect their lives in every way.

So, why did Jerry write this book? Well, he is not only a licensed builder and international developer, dedicated to preserving the environment, he is also a husband and father. He was the founder of the Humanitarian Medical Relief and Ayuda Medica Humanitaria and was cofounder in Exxposed.org. The experience has motivated him to found the new movement called OUR PUBLIC TRUST (OurPublicTrust. com), which has been designed to get the people of our world to unite and start talking freely about the dependence upon our government for the public’s air, water, and land.

As a father, environmentalist and humanitarian he feels passionately that he can’t let this travesty of environmental injustice to go unnoticed. He wanted, and has successfully, through the pages of this extremely interesting, shocking book, exposed the City of Atlanta and State of Georgia’s incredible lack of scruples, and derelictions of duty both to their people and the environment. This is a story which needed telling and he has done so, for the sake of the health and wellbeing of generations to come and our planet.

Why People LOVE GOD but HATE CHURCH? by Marnell W. Love Ph.D. Ed.D MDiv.

An insightful look into people’s perception of the church and worship.

The author of this book, Minister Marnell Wicks Love, has drawn upon his vast experience of more than forty years in church administration, accounting, financial management, and ministry, along with thorough research to write this insightful book.

After recovering from a serious illness in 2007 he decided to launch Love-to-Help Accounting and Financial Management, providing help to struggling churches in Chicago and surrounding areas, non-profits, and helping small businesses survive the COVID-19 pandemic. However, at the present time Minister Love primarily dedicates his ministry to those who cannot attend church because of health reasons, such as those in hospices and safe shelters for women and children escaping abusive households, he is dedicating a portion of book sales to the latter.

His career of caring for the financial, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing of people has given him a unique awareness of not only the modern-day role of the ministers in looking after their congregation, but also that of the churches. However, to ensure a complete picture when compiling this study he also carried out personal interviews, sent out questionnaires, and obtained written statements from church members and leaders.

The title of this enlightening book ‘Why People Love God and Hate Church’ was his unexpected finding. He discovered that although people were falling out of love with going to church, they still loved God, studied his words, and prayed, they just did not attend church to worship him.

So what can the church do to change this? Well, the many reasons for the change in attitudes towards the church and its ministry are revealed and explained.  There are many reasons, just a few examples being the attitudes of the ministers and their congregation to their community and newcomers, racial demographics, and the increased political role the church has. Candidly, Minister Love looks at the problems and gives examples of his, or other’s experiences with that problem, then he offers unprejudiced ideas for change. The problems he unveils and his propositions for change are thought-provoking and, indeed I suspect many of the readers who are members and leaders of the church and its congregations will have pause for thought, and may well re-examine their lives, attitudes, and behavior.

In conclusion: Bravely written, honest and frank, this extremely interesting book should be read by anyone, whether they go to church or not. Its insightful pages, and the author’s sermons, which he has included, will encourage any Christian to reassess themselves and their lifestyle.

About the Book:

This book is a summary of my dissertation research on why church attendance has declined over the last 40 years. My research included personal interviews, questionnaires using SurveyMonkey, and written statements from church members and leaders, those who stopped going to church, as well as people who never went to church and will not join a church. Various reasons were indicated as to why people did not go to church, but an unexpected finding from my research was that people still loved God, studied the Word of God, prayed often, and developed alternative methods of worship and spending time with God outside of traditional church services. The purpose of the 3-staged study was to determine if there are causes and effects that compel people to stop attending church services. In this book you will discover ways to help reverse the trend of empty seats in Christian churches on Sunday, improve perceptions about Christians among the general population, and save souls for Christ.

Enlightened in the 21st Century by Richard Krauland

Essential reading for the enquiring mind.

Right from the Introduction I had a feeling this book was going to be fascinating and it was. Why? Because the author invites us to draw a tree and then, after we have done so, he enlightens us about an incredibly common yet very accurate fact about that drawing, without seeing it himself, just from his observance of human nature. From that moment I was hooked, and thoroughly enjoyed every page!

Most people have important times in their lives which they remember clearly, and for Richard Krauland one of these times was one night in 1971 when he had a life-changing experience. He was 18 at the time, Martin Luther King and Robert F. Kennedy had been assassinated, the infamous Democrat’s National Convention in Chicago had taken place, and the war in Vietnam was raging, causing unrest in the country. That night and through to the next day, instead of sleeping the author found himself examining his life, what he had been told, what he knew, and what he believed in, or not. The result was his ‘philosophy of life,’ one which he has followed in the intervening forty-eight years. This was just one of the divine interventions which he believes has shaped his life and made him the man he is today, despite health challenges, a successful businessman, philosopher, and mathematician.

From the wonders of science to his controversial views on ‘fake science’ this book contains his thoughts and philosophies, in a no-holds-barred format, because, in his words “I believe that being well-grounded in the truth is absolutely necessary for a successful life as a free person.”

It was very interesting to read about our senses, and perceptions of things, and how these are continually evolving throughout time, from the far distant past into the future as scientific discoveries open our eyes to an infinite world which is waiting to be discovered. Yet at the other flip of the coin, he makes us think about the information we are fed via the social media, truths, half-truths, and lies, and emphasizes it is essential that we can differentiate between them to lead an enlightened life

I have no hesitation in highly recommending this thought-provoking book, and I challenge anyone with an inquisitive mind not to find it absolutely fascinating. Whether it is from the hundreds of interesting facts it contains, from the questions it answers, or the ability it has to make you sit up and think. Definitely one for those of us who have an enquiring mind which screams to be enlightened!

I IS God: The Journey Begins by Geir Gigja

A thought provoking and intriguing study into the spirit of I

This deeply psychological book, is the methodical reinterpretation of the metaphor of the Bible. The author Geir Gigja was born in Iceland, a country known since ancient times as the land of fire and ice, the gateway to heaven and hell, the beginning and the end. Since childhood he has had a fascination with language, its influences on the bible and Icelandic sagas, and the different meanings which can be attributed to words. Then as a young man an accident resulted in him being in a coma, that period of time, when he was aware yet unable to communicate led him to a lifetime’s journey of discovery and to the meaning of ‘I,’ and the culmination of this is this book, I IS God.

The author believes that ‘I’ is our inner spirit, the ‘us’ which makes each one of us unique, even before consciousness, when we were in a state of oblivion, the time when we were a very small child, that time when we existed, but before our state of awareness arrived.

By explaining why I IS God, the author believes that his readers will be able to use their new awareness and understanding to discover for themselves the true meanings of some of the classic biblical stories such as the Garden of Eden, Cain and Abel, the Flood of Noah, and the Tower of Babel.

Because the uniqueness of each person’s I, no one can see the I which lies within every one of us, it is our very being, our essence. He explains that all everyone or thing else sees as us, is in fact simply our image, a representation of us and not who we are really are.  Its presence is with us always as we evolve throughout our lives, awakening our minds, making us conscious of the decisions we make, and of the resulting consequences of them, and in doing so it continually influences our destiny, making us the people we are.

In conclusion: This is an extremely thought provoking and enlightening book. “I IS God” is the first book in a series, and I eagerly await its sequel which is called “Out of The Mist: The Story of Abraham and the Twelve Tribes.”

About the Book:

Stephen Hawking worked to create a theory of Everything. Now Geir Gigja is revealing the reason for everything.

Who is “I?”

Geir Gigja was born in Iceland, the land of ice and fire, which in ancient times was believed to be the gate to heaven and hell, the beginning and the end. As a young man critically injured and lying in a ten-day coma, Geir Gigja experienced a dramatic spiritual revelation, yielding new insights into the real meaning of the universe. He has spent the decades since then interpreting the metaphor of the Bible, in context with the Icelandic Sagas, then translating it all into English.

He has spent a lifetime opening the door to a brave new understanding of the creation of us all. “I Is God” provides the keys to unlock the metaphor of the Bible.

“I Is God – The Journey Begins” is the first of five books that will span this epic undertaking.

About the Book:

“Ambition is a powerful sword, especially when it’s wielded by a person of integrity.” – Wes Berry

Wes Berry built a remarkable $60 million-dollar international business from his family’s small florist shop, which began in Detroit. Now, in his extraordinary new book, he shares what he has learned over the years about leadership and business growth.

It is his belief that, to play in the Great Game, you must accept that winning and losing are both part of the same experience. Gleaning from his personal endeavors in business, Wes instructs and encourages you to take full responsibility as a leader. Drawing on insights from great leaders throughout history, he guides you in learning to do the key tasks that made them successful—tasks that will enable you to find complementary employees and associates whom you can help develop in the very same way.

With each turn of the page, you’ll gain knowledge from strategists such as Sun Tzu, General Douglas MacArthur and Sam Houston that will help you grow in business as well as life. Everyone has to start somewhere. As Wes himself has learned, those Small Beginnings often inexorably lead to some mighty Big Things!

Hosting Hapless Helpers -The Ultimate Guide by Karen Luff

NEW RELEASE

Now you can discover the truth about what it is like to host helpers for your projects in your own home.

Karen Luff, the author, left her native UK with her husband and five year old son for a new life in France over 12 years ago. The large house they fell in love with is called Le Chataignier, and it came with a cottage, several barns and land.

Like many expats they dreamt of running a smallholding and renting out holiday cottages. It wasn’t until they had settled in to their new home and took stock of all the things which needed doing that the size of their project, the amount of work, and sheer manpower needed to accomplish it all fully dawn on them.

However, when a relative regaled them with tales of his exploits on a working holiday Karen quickly realised that having helpers living in to assist with the work was the way forward. Nothing could have prepared them for the rollercoaster ride which was to become their lives from then on, and continues still today…

One of the primary reasons for writing this book, Karen says, is that having a complete stranger in your home can be hard work, also there are cultural and language problems, amongst others to overcome. She quickly realised that an ‘open letter’ on their Facebook page was needed for all prospective helpers to read prior to them applying to visit. This letter is in the book, and the reasons for each point, and the results of them not being adhered to make entertaining reading for people who like something different and sneak peaks into other people’s lives, and essential reading for anyone considering having helpers to stay and work on their project.

In Hosting Hapless Helpers Karen offers invaluable advice backed by comprehensive experience. You will find yourself laughing, crying and experiencing every emotion in-between within its pages, just remember that all the events and situations really happened…
